Watkins begins to show the manipulation very early in the play, in the Prologue to be specific. Roxie has just shot Fred Casely and the police and reporters were there. Prior to the police arriving, Roxie had talked Amos into taking the blame for the murder. She did not tell him that she had been cheating on her, so Amos gave her up after he received the news. Roxie says, “You said you’d stick, you said you’d–––” (12) Amos replies, “Sure, if he’s a burglar! What d’yuh lie to me for?” (12). This was when Amos found out about what Roxie failed to mention. Also, it shows the manipulation that she used in order for her to stay out of trouble. She was willing to throw her innocent husband under the bus to keep herself safe. Roxie’s manipulation of her husband to keep herself safe shows how easy the corrupted system could be taken advantage of.

Set in the roaring twenties the film Chicago is a musical starring Renee Zellweger as the client Roxie Hart who has just committed homicide. Roxie is represented by the famous lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere) who utilizes the media to influence the judge and juries decisions in favor of her case. The movie may dramatize the strategy of influencing the media to win cases, but it is portrayed accurately. Many lawyers in today’s time often utilize the media to help gain favor in their high profile cases. As an analysis of the movie the following questions will be considered.
In the science of studying media and communication, there are many different ways of approaching the subject in which you are going to analyse. That is to analyse advertisements, texts, TV-series, films etc. and other media. My task for this assignment is to give an analysis of a film of my choice. A film is a quite complex medium to analyse; thus it is important to have analysis "tools" or some criteria to follow. In my analysis I am asked to consider the use and resolution of binary opposition and through analysis of narrative structure. In my assignment I am going to consider how the couple is represented, and how the narrative structure and binary oppositions have influence on the plot of the story.
Synopsis: The movie Chicago takes place in the era of jazz music and flappers. Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) is an aspiring singer. She is desperate to get a job in showbiz. Roxie goes to a club to see her idol’s performance. She does not know she is watching Velma Kelly’s
She is going to be bombarded with hate and an unwelcome group of girls in the Women’s block in Cook County Jail. She will be bullied and some fights may occur. Also, “Mama”, who in the original production was a source of aid for the women will now be a huge body guard for the prison, who is rude and vicious towards Roxie. The new production will not have an appearance of Amos, he will divorce her due to her horrible behavior in the beginning of the play once she is sentenced to prison. Billy Flynn, who is the lawyer, will be more helpful towards Roxie to free her from prison because he finds her attractive and they eventually fall in the love at the end of the production. The casting of the production will be similar to the original production. The actors and actresses will need to be able to sing, dance, and play the role of the character they are assigned to with maximal potential. The set design will be decorated like a jail, each women will have their own cell and there will be a walk way for the visitors to enter. The lighting will be dark and gloomy with spotlights on Roxie partaking in her miserable experience. Each character will be dressed in different colored jump suits that relate to their personalities in the production. The jump suits will be rather tight so that you are able to see their movements better when they dance. The girls in the jail cell will look more like the part of a criminal rather than all dolled up. This means light makeup for the women and their hair will be messy but out of their face so it doesn’t bother them when they
What makes a movie great to some people, and terrible to others? Many people have different criteria to judge a movie by. Some people may look at the actors, and only the actors, while others appreciate the art that went into making the movie. This essay will evaluate the success of Spy as a comedy genre using a few specifically selected criteria. The criteria being used to judge the movie are: quality of jokes, sound, retention, and quality of the scene. There will be a comparison with the opposition’s criteria, and a discussion of how their criteria doesn’t make the movie a dud. Through the listed criteria this essay will evaluate the success of Spy, and give details about why the film meets the criteria.
How does it feel starting over in a completely new place? In the movie “The Karate Kid”, Daniel, the main character, and his mom moved to the California from New Jersey because of his mom’s new job offer. Daniel started going to school in California and met a girl named Ali, whom he started to like. He started going out with her. Daniel was getting beat up by some bullies; one of them was Ali’s ex-boyfriend. They knew karate very well, but Daniel did not. So Daniel decided to learn karate. Daniel and his mom were living in an apartment and one day he discovers that the handyman at his apartment, Mr.Miyagi, knows karate very well. He asked Mr.Miyagi to teach him karate, and Mr.Miyagi became his karate teacher.
In service of this argument, the essay unfolds in three parts. The first section sketches an appropriate framework for understanding how cinema marshals and moves viewers by engaging them in a fully embodied experience.4 The second section offers a brief overview of the film's plot before turning to an analysis of its triptych narrative and affective development. The third and final section considers the methodological, critical, and theoretical implications suggested by the preceding analysis.
Set in a similar time period to The Headline Woman, Chicago tells the story of stardom-seeking Roxie Hart who joins the company of murderesses on death row after killing her lover out of jealousy and madness. With assistance from gatekeeper “Mama” and the charming, sharp-witted attorney Billy Flynn, Hart finally gets the press and fame she was searching for. Her and fellow inmate, Velma Kelly, spend the rest of the movie competing for the front page and utilizing the press to avoid taking responsibility for their actions.
Once home, I rushed to the television to start the night. After hours of watching movies I found out that all movies are very different from one another, but every story has something unique. Each film I watched drew me and immersed me into it’s world. I’d never seen anything like it. I couldn't wait to watch more of them and be a part of even more, new and exhilarating stories.
