Both demographic suicide and overpopulation are two major problematic trends that are evident in modern society. The question is, “Which way are global population trends are truly pointing, demographic suicide or overpopulation?” In accordance to the Merriam Webster Dictionary overpopulation is, “the condition of having a population so dense as to cause environmental deterioration, an impaired quality of life, or a population crash.” Demographic suicide is, “not having enough babies to replace themselves.” Both demographic suicide and overpopulation are globally recognized issues, however the side in which global trends are pointing towards is overpopulation. Before both the medical and industrial revolution, the main source of income for many families was subsistence and commercial farming. Women gave birth to numerous children to increase the amount of hands that could be used to help on the feilds and in the home. As a country is more developed, they are more likely to have fewer births. This is because in developed countries, women generally are treated to a more equal life to men. In developed countries, women are more likely to have access to both an education and birth control. These factors directly correlate to the amount of children a women will have. In developed countries women have a lower inequality-adjusted HDI, this means that they are treated more closely as equal to men. Women’s rights have played an important factor in the change in population
