Professionalism can be defined as the skills expected from someone that was trained to perform a certain job or duty. Personally, I agree with this simple description, but at the same time I believe that professionalism is a much more complex characteristic. There is a difference between being “a” professional and “be” professional. Nowadays, most of us, students, are looking forward to obtain a degree in order to be qualified for a certain type of job. In other words, the main goal of students is to become professionals in a particular area. Become a professional it is not only related to college and the learning process, it is related to the development and improvement of one’s abilities. However, the way in that a person is able to implement those skills is what I consider professionalism. It is not only about the abilities or knowledge that a person might have, but rather about the behavior and the values behind those abilities. Professionalism is a characteristic that needs to be earned, practiced and improved every day. There are many factors that need to be taken in consideration when defining professionalism. For example, someone might be an expert in nursing sciences, but could also steal or misuse drugs from a hospital, or not provide an empathetic care for its patient. Being professional involves successfully executing those skills and abilities learned, but always in an honest and acknowledgeable way. Professionalism means to show a positive and leading conduct, avoid mistakes, solve difficulties, be responsible and to follow the rules. Also, it is important to make a division between the professional and the personal setting. For instance, a person shouldn’t do things in order to obtain a personal benefit, such as hiring a close member of the family if that person is not qualified for the
