Definition Essay: The American Dream

In general, the idea of the American Dream is to achieve prosperity and everlasting success through hard work and dedication. Although this is the norm, many people have their own unique idea of what the American Dream is based on how they were raised and what they believe success is. For one person success could be to live in a mansion, while for others it may be to live in a cardboard box. An example of the general idea is in the novel Spare Parts by Joshua Davis, where four teens are out to chase after the American Dream. While the example in the novel is very general, I have my own vision of what the American Dream is.

Through everybody’s eyes is their own version of the American Dream. Whether it’s the stereotypical dream with a good job, a family, and a house with a white picket fence, or it could be just getting by at the end of the month financially. The American Dream doesn’t have a specific image but rather a particular mindset. Lots of people have a goal in their life that they have to work hard to be successful towards that goal, but in most cases that goal may be unrealistic.

The American Dream is one of those terms that people refer to when talking about immigration, financial status, and so much more. But what does the term really refer to? People used to think of the American Dream as financial prosperity, religious and financial freedom, and all around success. Now, the term may mean something similar, but people are much less focused on it. If anything, the American Dream today is focused on gaining material goods and proving your bank account is larger than your neighbors. With today’s economy, laws and regulations, immigration customs, and overall attitude towards work, people are seldom focused on achieving the American Dream.

This theory that was once worshipped throughout America is now nothing more than a myth. The only people that can still live the American Dream are those that have been born into an already prosperous family. The American dream is a dying concept.

The American Dream can be defined as the idea that every US citizen should have equal opportunity to achieve success through hard work and determination. Everyone in America should have equal opportunity, but this is not always the case because there is a lot of competition. Going for a goal will have its obstacles, but one of the biggest and most difficult things to overcome is other people. Examples of crushed dreams can be found in the books Of Mice and Men, The Old Man and the Sea, The Jungle and A Raisin in the Sun. In each of these books, the perception of the American Dream is different, but it is not possible in all of these cases because of society.

Everyone has heard of the american dream whether they think it’s real or not. The american dream is what people believed to be the ability to have a thriving life in america. America provides the american dream to everyone because everyone is equal and has the same opportunity and it’s a matter of how hard one works to achieve the american dream.

For some the American dream is the value of hard work. To others it's a huge emphasis on material possessions. So, the American dream is no longer the American dream. It is a dream that anyone and everyone can relate to. This dream is the idea of having what ever you want. May it be material goods, ideas and values, or freedoms and rights. This idea also represents the uniqueness of America. It is a dream a lot of people around the world don't get to enjoy;

The American dream is something that has been around for decades. Every person has a different vision about the American dream. Some would like a moderate life, while others want all the riches of life. Now some will ask “What is the American dream?”. The American dream is defined by the individual, although some may have influences by their religion, ethnic diversity, and ancestors.

First, let's define "American Dream". "American Dream" is what you would consider a "perfect life." It can be full of happiness, money, love, food, cars, whatever you desire, everyone has a different opinion. One person’s American Dream may be totally different from someone else’s, that is what makes us all individuals. My American Dream would include a good job and lots of money, spare time for my family and I, and most importantly, healthiness.

People have misconceptions about what the American dream really is. To them the American dream stands for the closest to a perfect life that we can get with a perfect family, perfect job, perfect family, and a perfect life. The American dream is not about getting all of the fancy material things that people drool over. Instead, the American dream is not something that can be defined to a tee or exactly explained by a definition because the American dream is your dream. For example, if someone wanted to begin a family, discover something great, or even just live a life that they are proud with then that’s the American dream. The American Dream in my opinion is to be successful in your own mind and to have a family and support all of the other dreams that surround us. If in someone's mind their thoughts of the American Dream is to just have a job, that is their American Dream. If someone else's dream to be a billionaire with tons of cars, houses, and fame, that’s their American Dream, and to support all of those dreams and to not be negative about one another's thoughts about their goals in life, is a big part in the American Dream.
