In general, the idea of the American Dream is to achieve prosperity and everlasting success through hard work and dedication. Although this is the norm, many people have their own unique idea of what the American Dream is based on how they were raised and what they believe success is. For one person success could be to live in a mansion, while for others it may be to live in a cardboard box. An example of the general idea is in the novel Spare Parts by Joshua Davis, where four teens are out to chase after the American Dream. While the example in the novel is very general, I have my own vision of what the American Dream is.
My vision of the American Dream is simple. In my vision, I am able to be as independent as I want and am not held back

Four boys, named Lorenzo, Christian, Oscar, and Luis, come to the United States (three of them, illegally) in order to try and fulfill their own American Dreams. The American Dream that the boys are chasing is to live in the United States legally and receive the same great opportunities that citizens receive. For the teens trying to achieve their own version of the American Dream, it was “...a lot of hard work, and that appealed to…” (Davis 27) them. Illegally living in the United States caused many problems for three out of four of the teens trying to chase their American Dream. One example of a problem that it caused was when Oscar wanted to enter the military in order to give back for everything the United States had done for him. Oscar was not allowed to enlist in the United State military because “...students who crossed the border illegally were still citizens of their native country and couldn’t join.” (Davis 50). Throughout the entire novel, being illegally in the United States is what held them back from capturing their American Dream.
Both my idea of the American Dream and the boys’ ideas of the American Dream have similarities and differences. The two are comparable because in my vision I don’t want to be held back, just as the boys do not want to be. Although they are comparable on the surface, our circumstances are very different. For me, achieving my vision of the American Dream will be hard work. In contrast, the boys will be forever held back by the fact that they are illegally in the United
My model of the American Dream can be viewed in numerous ways, it depends on how emotionally deep one is. My American Dream is to live life to the fullest.
In the book Spare Parts by Joshua Davis and Fighting our Goliaths by Rabbi Will Berkovits, the idea of an underdog as the authors explore the importance of inner beauty, sacrifice, and hardship. No matter what color you are or what kind of world you grew up in. But is it because of the color of our skin or the amount of money that we have in our pockets that influence the judgment of others? Or is it the strength and intelligence that we hold on the inside that truly describes who we are? Rabbi argues that beauty isn't always on the outside but is being held on the inside. “Its true beauty was always there, but locked away like so much hidden human potential” ( Rabbi 1.) The idea that everyone is special and unique is a term used by many but
What is the American dream? The American Dream to me would be a family, loyal husband, good paying job and most of all my health. But my perspective of the American Dream and other people/authors perspective could be viewed very differently. Frederick Douglass and F. Scott Fitzgerald both have very different views of their American Dream.
Through everybody’s eyes is their own version of the American Dream. Whether it’s the stereotypical dream with a good job, a family, and a house with a white picket fence, or it could be just getting by at the end of the month financially. The American Dream doesn’t have a specific image but rather a particular mindset. Lots of people have a goal in their life that they have to work hard to be successful towards that goal, but in most cases that goal may be unrealistic.
What is the American dream? The traditional American dream is one in which someone can start from nothing and build themselves up into a great success, with all the material trappings that go with that success. So, if the American dream is self-built success, then what defines success? In the American dream, success is largely defined by the possession of certain material goods and money. You are considered a success in America if you have enough money to be comfortable financially (i.e., paying all of your bills and having plenty left over for entertainment and material goods), and if you have possession of a nice house in the suburbs, a nice car or two, a pretty and well-dressed family, and the respect and even awe of your community. That is the American dream and the success that defines it.
The American Dream is one of those terms that people refer to when talking about immigration, financial status, and so much more. But what does the term really refer to? People used to think of the American Dream as financial prosperity, religious and financial freedom, and all around success. Now, the term may mean something similar, but people are much less focused on it. If anything, the American Dream today is focused on gaining material goods and proving your bank account is larger than your neighbors. With today’s economy, laws and regulations, immigration customs, and overall attitude towards work, people are seldom focused on achieving the American Dream.
The American Dream can be generally defined as living a prosperous and fulfilled life. As Americans when we consider the American Dream we think of being
The American dream is the idea held by many in the United States of America that through hard work, courage and determination one can achieve prosperity.
are ideals used to define the American Dream. The American Dream promises immigrants and citizens a chance to pursue a better life, which is portrayed throughout the novel Behold the Dreamers . Behold the Dreamers , by Imbolo Mbue, follows the lives of Jende and Neni Jonga, an immigrant couple from Cameroon, who live in Harlem in hopes of providing a better life for their family. Throughout the Jonga’s journey, Imbolo Mbue proves that the essentials of hard work, education, and strong families are not enough for achieving the American Dream. Jende and Neni came to America in hopes of a brighter future for their family, but come to face with reality and are forced to make an impossible choice.
First, let's define "American Dream". "American Dream" is what you would consider a "perfect life." It can be full of happiness, money, love, food, cars, whatever you desire, everyone has a different opinion. One person’s American Dream may be totally different from someone else’s, that is what makes us all individuals. My American Dream would include a good job and lots of money, spare time for my family and I, and most importantly, healthiness.
The American Dream has been an ideal sought by millions of immigrants and refugees for over 200 years. While many of these immigrants will fall into the bowels of American society; a lucky few will rise to the top and create a life for themselves that their parents could never have achieved. That is the beauty and horror of the American Dream. It is a spring of wealth with unlimited potential, but with unlimited potential comes unlimiteddwsire for more. The poster boy for this story is strangely not an immigrant, but rather a young farm boy who wanted to chase his personal American Dream.
The American dream is an ideology that has been around, known, and praised for a long time. It is an aspiration many long to achieve and protect with their lives. A story that has been written out for us and embed in our minds. As children, we begin school and are taught the pledge of allegiance and how important it is for everyone to take a moment to praise and thank what the nation for what it has to offer. We rise and hold this belief to our hearts looking upon the flag representing our nation. We grow up believing that we are the privileged ones who have the opportunity of liberty and justice for all. Glorifying what it means to be an American, convincing us that we can all have an opportunity to even be President thus creating a fixed mindset of paradise. Therefore, serving the American dream as an expectation rather than as stimuli; created only for a narrow group of people exposing the realization that only a few have the privilege to acquire the dream. America is a “new nation” an experiment founded on change and beliefs (Beach 148). A nation, our founders believed could be different and gift people with individuality, hopes, and enlighten them with the American dream. A dream brought from desperate times, providing motivation for many even until this day.
People can come from all over to pursue their hopes and dreams, but what isn’t mentioned with the America Dream, is all the bumps in the road to achieve it. Big factors in the unsuccessfulness of dreams can be tied to the fact of crime and poverty. Although they are present, the social issues can be averted by going after the problem at the source of it all, the kids. To make the dreams more successful, the kids of today need to be focused on being brought up right to make America great again and fight against the social issues creating a catastrophe. Live should be better for our children, than it was for
The American Dream in my opinion is to be successful in your own mind and to have a family and support all of the other dreams that surround us. If in someone's mind their thoughts of the American Dream is to just have a job, that is their American Dream. If someone else's dream to be a billionaire with tons of cars, houses, and fame, that’s their American Dream, and to support all of those dreams and to not be negative about one another's thoughts about their goals in life, is a big part in the American Dream. In my video I had many different sides of the American Dream but a lot of them had to do with my point of view of how I want my American Dream to be. Some of the clips that I put into my video were ones of U.S troops coming home from
What is truly the American Dream that people have been trying to achieve all these years? Is it that Dream of making it big in America, where people hear the successes stories from rags to riches or does it go beyond things like money, expensive cars and houses. The American dream itself has no set definition to its meaning, people can only assign what they think is the right term for it. For this paper and research on the American Dream The definition that I came up with is that the achievement of the American Dream does not come from possessions but more so from each person personal achievement of happiness while not interfering with others achievement of happiness. While this definition of the American dream is broad it is already not achievable.
