Loyalists In between 1760 and 1800, conflict ensued between Great Britain and the American colonies, now the United States. Because of certain events and documents, those who had not chosen a side would have benefitted more if indecisive individuals become loyal to the British crown. Those who obeyed to Great Britain were known as loyalists, or, according to the DBQ Theme assignment, “Tories.” The unsure colonists would benefit more if converting to loyalists because of Great Britain’s power and strength, economic superiority, and that the patriots are of barbaric and violent nature. Also, the patriots were not ready to start a revolution even though they believed the opposite. Great Britain was a powerful and strong nation during the …show more content…
Document 4 includes a majority of facts relating to the economic advantage that Great Britain has. Two decent examples that Document 4 gives are, “Value of the dollar dropped throughout the war,” and, “Dollar lost 90% of its value by 1779.” The dollar that is being referred to is the Continental Dollar. Furthermore, at around 1781, it can be inferred that the Continental Dollar completely lost its value as Document 4 states, “By 1781 only ‘hard money’ (gold, silver) used in U.S. markets.” Great Britain, however, has a more stable economy without needing to resort to metals, and with what Document 4 includes, “Well established system of taxation and finance.” This compares to the loss of value throughout the Revolutionary War. Britain exercises its economic strength by, from what the article states, “Britain spent 4.5 million pounds on Hessians alone” (Doc 4). Almost 5 million pounds in the 1770s is still a lot of money compared to modern-day Britain’s economy. Britain, with the evidence of hiring Hessians, is able to financially support an army unlike the United States where a document confirms, “...but most are wretchedly clothed...” (Doc 5). The colonies have a more inferior economy based off of the history of events and documented
One raid on the American South was so serious Colonel John Baker had to surrender to the British. Soon after the attack the American Revolutionary War was almost about to happen. Some loyalists remained well..loyal to the British during that time period. The 2 sides as in the east and west side were very royal colonies.
For article one my country, Italy voted for each motion to pass. For motion one, we voted to pass it as it was to give us, Italy our land we were promised from the Treaty of London. As for the other three motions, we voted to pass them as we made alliances with the other countries, excluding Germany to allow us to receive what we wanted from the Treaty of Versailles. We also voted to pass the other motions as they did not affect our country personally. For the votes, all for went in our direction as we voted yes to each motion, which all went through with a pass.
Following the victory of Britain and America in the French and Indian War, Britain was at a crossroads. The war had depleted much of Britain’s treasury and left the nation with a substantial debt. So naturally, Britain started to cut spending and increase revenues. America however basked in a victory for their lands and turned their gaze west, hoping to settle past the Appalachian mountains. This put Britain on edge, as part of their plan to cut spending would result in pulling most of their troops from America and thus leaving colonists in danger.
Being subjected to public humilation in front of massive crowds with harsh punishments, the loyalists found themselves in a tough predicament between the radicals and their independence from Britian while the loyalists thought differently. Most of the loyalists found their properties vandalized, looted and burned by angry mobs of men. There was no doubt that the patriots of the thirteen colonies controlled the public discourse. There was bound to be a revolt against the British by the patriots because they didn’t agree against the policies imposed by the British parliament. The patriots of “The New World” have a much more logical reasoning than the loyalists because they felt that the British parliament was in
At the time they were often called Tories, Royalists or King’s Men. Patriots called them “Persons inimical of the liberties of America.” The Patriots, those who supported the revolution, opposed them. 15% of the loyalists or 65,000-70,000 fled to other parts of the British Empire (SFI five, HISTORY.com). Patriots, who were also known as Rebels, Revolutionaries, Continentals or American-Whigs. They were those colonists of the Thirteen Colonies who violently rebelled against British control during the American Revolution and in July 1776 declared the United States of America an independent
In “Document 2: A Loyalist is Tarred and Feathered (1774)” it says that “He (Malcolm) was dragged in a cart with thousands taking part, some beating clubs… Under torture, they demanded him to curse the King.” The author of this document attempts to defame the patriots, portraying them as brutes who beat innocent old men. Both “Document 4: A comparison of Strength (1775-1783)” and “Document 8: Value of Trade with England(1763-1781)” state that Britain has the upper hand of the war. Document 4 shows that the British are financially and militarily superior, and Document 8 shows the lack of trade between America and England, thus implying that the colonists lost their primary source of resources, Britain.
Role of Government Directions The following question requires you to construct a coherent essay that integrates your interpretation of Documents A–H and your knowledge of the period referred to in the question. High scores will be earned only for essays that both cite key pieces of evidence from the documents and draw on outside knowledge of the period. 1. Analyze the extent to which western expansion affected the lives of Native Americans during the period 1860–90 and evaluate the role of the federal government in those effects. Use the documents and responses to each document to construct your response. Document A Santana, Chief of the Kiowas Source: Santana, Chief of the
American colonists mainly descended from England and were loyal to the British Crown, however, politically the decisions made in the Continental Congress and the stopping of salutary neglect angered the colonists, socially, as a result of unfair taxes, colonists from all the colonies began to rebel and thus have their interests aligned which developed a sense of social unity, and economically after many unjust acts were carried out by the British Empire, the colonies began to help one another, therefore between 1750 to 1776 colonists began to cease their loyalty towards England and develop an independent American identity.
The effects of the Cuban Revolution on women’s lives and gender relations in Cuba from 1959 to 1990 include that some say women have not reached equality yet with men, women gained more opportunities for themselves, economy and politics, and also how women still had responsibility for children and home, not men.
During the time period of 1600 to 1776, the relationship between Great Britain and the colonies changed massively. The relationship between Great Britain and the colonies changed greatly because of three main reasons: the relationships that the colonies and Great Britain were built on, the struggles that the colonists faced because of their relationships with Great Britain, and the anger that the colonists expressed because of the ridiculous taxes that they had to pay. Once the colonists realized that they were suffering under British rule, most of the colonists became eager to be independent from Great Britain. The colonists’ Second Continental Congress believed that the acts and taxes created by the British Parliament were unconstitutional, unjust, and unfair towards the colonists and because of that belief, the Declaration signers forever changed our country.
The Revolutions became very different throughout the courses of each. Britain, no doubt was in a better position to fund the war. Firstly, Britain was an established country with a tax system that had proven to produce revenue. Secondly, it could afford to generate more debt to fund the war. America however, was only beginning to set up a government of its own. Although they had a Congress in place, the Articles of Confederation didn’t allow it to tax colonists and without income, it was difficult for Congress to borrow money or replace what they were spending on the war. Despite this, Congress did not receive any voluntary payments from the states. In fact, each state began producing their own currencies to make up for the lack of money; so many different forms of currency were competing with the true currency, the continental dollar. Britain
Even though America was now completely self-sufficient, there were still people loyal to England. Often referred to as the "Tories", they did not want to abandon their parent country. The loyalists believed that America would never survive without England's protection and guidance. Mather Byles said, "...which is better, to be ruled by one tyrant three thousand miles away, or by three thousand tyrants not a mile away." (The Famous Mather Byles). People like him believed that creating a separate government in America would not solve any problems, but only create more new ones. Others preached that it is a shame to leave their parent country. However, since the loyalists made up a small percentage of the population and were generally rich, the majority of people rarely favored their ideas. Prior to the breakout of the Revolution, many Tories had been tarred and feathered, beaten, or were subjected to other forms of punishment.
The citizens are torn between who to support: The British or The Americans. In 1607, the British set off their ships to the land of what is known as America, in which the new Americans were promised a new life. However, as time went on and The British were in debt from the French Revolution, The British took their next step in taxing the Americans. The Americans were outraged and were rebelling, the smallest of objects were being taxed. The Americans believed that by colonizing in an entirely different country means that they should have their own government, thus, the American Revolution. The American Revolution should occurr because it is essential that the Americans were able to become their own country and learn to govern themselves without British help.
The war seemed to separate the colonists into three separate groups. Ones that were loyal to Britain, which were called “loyalists”. Most loyalists had “business ties” with Britain and saw being on Britain’s side of the war as being “defenders”. While other loyalists despised those that rebelled and assumed their reason to rebel was to obtain more money from the empire. The second group was with George Washington called the “Patriots”, who were fighting for the freedom from Britain, and the third group were people that were trying to go about their lives and not get involved in the war. Though slaves were asked to participate in the war, most went to Britain’s side in exchange for freedom. In 1775, Washington and his army win the battle at Saratoga and this ultimately wins over France as an
The Renaissance challenged the status quo of the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, the Church had authority over most people. These people also had limited rights. All of this changed during the Renaissance. This period of time focused on the philosophy of humanism, which embodied the idea that humans were a significant part of the world. The Renaissance changed man’s view of man through the institutions of literature, astronomy, anatomy, and art.
