Texas won its independence in 1836, but they had a few decisions to make as a new country and obstacles. Texas should not be annexed because Texas had problems with the Indians and Mexico. Texas is also a slave state, so the U.S. would have to add another slave state. Texas should not be annexed because they have problems with the Mexicans and Indians. Document 2 states “Resolved, That said annexation would likely involve us in a war with Mexico, with tribes of injured and vindictive Aborigines [Indians]. This shows that if Texas is annexed, then the U.S. might also have problems with the Mexicans and Indians. This also shows that they might have to find a solution for Texas because they have problems with Mexicans and Indians. Another reason
The ideals of the Annexation of Texas were greater than the Mexican Cession. The Annexation of Texas was a voluntarily act made by the people, setting an example for others to follow. In contrast, the Mexican Cession cost 15 million dollars to solve and obtain the land too. Also, it created disorder and lasting conflicts about border issues, that last to present
Mexico and the American settlers shared many different religious beliefs. These different beliefs caused Americans to ignore Mexico’s authority, which progressed into riots and led to Texas’s independence from Mexico. Texas had applied for annexation to the US twice but was rejected because the US did not want to anger Mexico, but after President Polk took office he got Congress to vote to annex Texas. According to Jesus Velasco-Marquez, he states, “From Mexico’s point of view, the annexation of Texas to the United States was inadmissible for both legal and security reasons. Thus, when the Mexican government learned of the treaty signed between Texas and the United States in April 1844, it.would consider such an act ‘a declaration of war’”(Document C).
Throughout the late 1830s and early 1840s, political controversy broke out over the annexation of Texas into the United States claiming that it was the destiny of the country to expand through the Manifest Destiny. Many Americans saw the potential addition of Texas as an essential component in Westward expansion, however, war with Mexico was an unavoidable risk and would create even more problems with slavery. Northern and Western regions of the Unites States opposed annexation because while the South wanted to add Texas into the Union to expand the slave industry. Annexation of Texas was also seen as revenge for the vast amount of American deaths during the Alamo and Goliad. Politicians battled back and forth on whether or not Texas should be in American control or not. I believe that the annexation of of
“It is time for opposition to the annexation of Texas to cease... Texas is now ours. ”(Doc A). because Texas had already been annexed by the United States, this gave them
A man named John L. O’Sullivan says that Mexico is “...hammering our power, limiting our greatness, and checking the fulfilment of our manifest destiny” (Document A). This quote talks about how the Mexican government is affecting the Texas in a bad way. O’Sullivan also states,”Mexico never can exert any real governmental authority over such a country” (Document A). The quote is talking about California, which is with Mexico and has anger towards the government as well. A Mexican, named Jesus Velasco-Marquez, said “...when Texas and America signed the treaty, it would be considered a declaration of war” (Document C). This shows how desperate the government is toward getting back at Texas for leaving. Also “Mexico was catholic and non-slavery, while Texas was protestant and pro-slavery” (Roden 317). Texas left because Mexico and Texas had different beliefs. The Mexican government gave Texas a great reason to leave because no one can live in a country with a terrible government, and different
If I were a voting member of Congress during the debate over Texas annexation and war with Mexico, I would vote against. At this point in history Texas was having economic and military problems, and that was one of the reasons why the Republic of Texas wanted to join the federal union. That would cause us to lose large amount money and possibly get us into debt. Also, even if texas joined the union it would still retain its geographical and economic vitality regardless of whether it joined or not. It would be unnecessary because we would be wasting thousands, or even millions, of dollars on something would not even befit the United States
How Texas will be ruled after it annexed wouldn’t changed how it is already. Since the nation expanded to the West it made the South want to annex Texas even though some opposed, which made a revolution happen in order to gain it.
The Annexation of Texas was one of the most debatable events in American history. The question at hand would deeply impact the United States for generations to come. There was on one side a long list of reasons for why to not allow annexation, but there was the same kind of list on the other side for reasons to push forward for annexation. Some of these reasons of both sides were slaves, war, manifest destiny, politics , and constitutional rights. Also the way Texas began in a way said that they should be apart of the United States In the end there were more important reasons for annex Texas into the union, than to leave Texas the was she was.
True Texans know the value of our land, and that the United States needs it and wants it. The United States is much larger and more powerful than Texans, and the United States will not stop till they expand as much as they can, but this can be a secret weapon for the Texans. There are more benefits for annexation, rather than being an independent republic. Texas have many enemies and the United States can help texas fight them off and scare them before they even think about taking our land. The united states has many states and each state has its own army. Even though you will give up control of your armies when you are in need texas will be able to call for help from the United States and their armies are much bigger than our armies.
In 1836, the Texans declared its independence from Mexico. Texas had declared their independence from Mexico because the Texans had trouble being a part of Mexico and wanted their own independence because the Texans had objected Mexico’s way of governing. The Texans were justified in declaring their independence, and they were honorable men fighting for their freedom. One reason is that the government had not exactly listened to the Texans. Another reason is that the Texans should have a choice for their independence since the original 13 colonies had also declared independence when they felt they had been treated unfairly. And third, Mexico had not been treating the Texans nicely, causing the Texans to rebel. All in all, the Texans had declared
Up until the 1830’s, what is known as the Republic of Texas has belonged to Mexico. Texas joined the Union in 1845. Of course, this has made Mexico angry and problems have increased along the
The US Government has 3 branches, The Separation of Power, in which are equal in power. These include the Executive branch, Judicial branch, and the Legislative branch. All said branches or the Legislative branch more specifically is separated into two “departments”, The House of Reperceives and The Senate. These “Departments” are divided even further by state then divided into districts. Each said district has their own resistive.
When comparing Texas to others states in regards to providing services for the poor, Texas is considered more restrictive (Brown). In Texas, the primary goal is to provide a temporary aid to a family in need. This way families can start earning an income and provide for themselves, ending their dependency on welfare. The breakdown of Texans that lack health insurance remains high, by age there are an 84.5% of adults and 15.5% of children( Champagne).
Texas, nicknamed “The Lone star State”, has always been very unique compared to any other state in the United States of America. Texas have a sense of great pride in where they come from. Texans hold their heads a just a little higher than anyone else. Texas is the second largest state in the U.S., Texans have their own pledge of allegiance to the state flag, and is the only state whose flag is permitted to fly as high as the American flag. So, why is it that Texans take so much pride in their own state? Texans take great pride in their state because at one point before Texas was a state belonging to the United States, it was its own country. This is how Texas got its name as the “Lone star” State. In nineteenth century, Texas fought many battles against Mexico and its leader Santa Anna, to gain Independence from the country. After many hostel wars and lives lost, Texas made a break through at the Battle of San Jacinto and conquered the Mexican government in the year 1836, becoming the new Republic of Texas. It then remained Independent for almost ten years. Our Independence and history of secession runs through our veins. The topic is a reoccurring one when it comes to politics. In recent years, there have been talks if Texas should secede from the United States again like they did in 1836. According to a poll in 2009, it showed that “50% Republicans, 40% Independents, and 15% Democrats believed that Texas should stand as an independent nation.” “338157 Texans have already
The History of Texas Texas history itself had its own amazing story. The small number of American settlers moved to the land of Texas had led to the dramatic war with the Mexicans. The land of Texas was used to be owned by Mexicans. Due to the argument between Texans and Mexicans caused the battle of San Jacinto and Mexican War. In long ago before American settlers moved to Texas, this place was so rich and an abundance of land.
