To fully understand this artwork, The Cycle of Terror and Tragedy, done by artist Graydon Parrish in 2002, one must have a general understanding of the events that took place on September 11th, 2001. Because the painting is portraying the events and the aftermath to the viewer, it is understood that the audience is aware of this significant date. Parrish has a very strong stance against the actions taken on this day, as he displays this tragic event. The viewer's eye is initially drawn to the two tall screaming men in the center of the photo, used to represent the twin towers. This sets a very dark and depressing tone as the tragedy of September 11th is truly portrayed. The story that can be seen here is read left to right on the canvas, showing …show more content…
This paintings powerful message can clearly be seen to the viewer, especially culturally when we see the torn up Constitution of the United States in the background, representing a “free-for-all” on this day as our American beliefs did not matter to the terrorists. We also see the diversity between the three suffering women in handcuffs, showing that this tragedy hit everyone, but we were all bound together as Americans. The visual claims that this event truly was horrific and shows the absolute loss of innocence throughout our nation on this one day. The hands of the men especially show the suffering and anguish our nation felt, as they are deformed, projecting their pain onto the viewer. This work specifically reflects a historical moment in American history in that it depicts the events of September 11th. However, it also shows the future that is to come with the old man who survived passing the information of these events onto the young innocently blindfolded girl on the bottom right. Clearly, this piece is superficial in the sense where it comments on one event, but it also goes deeper, showing the aftermath and actions to come for the American
For my research I visited the memorial for the victims and heroes of 911. The location for this grand and majestic art piece is in downtown Toms River. “Wow, the art I discovered was just so beautiful.” On a cold December morning in 2015 I took a short ride to Downtown Toms River. As soon as I pulled
Unfortunately another reality is that as more Isis supported bad things happen then more single stories about Islam being the root of this problem will be made. It is horrible such ugly factors in society can shape such an awful perspective about innocent people who did not shape those factors. Looking at this source is a grief giving experience, which the author communicates well in this art. The author excels at capturing the moment when Nathan Crillo died and how the statue at the war memorial looks. The author puts a blank space at the side to emphasize the sense and understanding of the emptiness and grief that was felt. The statue of the soldier reaching his hand out symbolizes how Nathan Crillo will now be a part of the many soldiers who lost their lives for the Country. In the drawing of Nathan Crillo, only half of his body is depicted reminding us he is no longer alive but he will still exist in our memories. The overall message the author communicates is that Nathan Crillo is a fallen hero and there will be grief for his death but no matter what he will always be
Sometimes words cannot exactly explain what we want to convey, so we need a visual to support it. A similar thing was observed in the article of Alan M. Dershowitz, he cleverly makes use of Ben Shah’s painting in the article to grab the attention of folks. The author writes about a murder case of a paymaster and a guard of the South Braintree by Sacco and Vanzetti, both were Italian immigrant anarchists. Surprisingly, the truth was not revealed that whether Sacco and Vanzetti were the killers and this case is still unsolved. I agree with the author that the trials could not get to the fair results. I believe that the painting is an ironic symbol of the justice. It silently expresses a lot what the text can’t. I think the painting adds words
Paintings are different than books or movies because they allow you to create your own thoughts and interpretations rather than telling you what you should think. This allows creative and different takes on an original piece of art.The Surrender, a painting by Joseph Griffith, was published in October of 2006. It features two sides in what appears to be a war. The left side is occupied by the epitome of American icons and showcases the American flag, while the left side contains, not only enemies of America, but “bad guys” from classic movies surrendering with a white flag. This painting can be interpreted as labeling popular American icons as heroes, showing the change in society’s change in what they consider a role model.
This painting tells a sad story about a general who is willing to die for his citizens. This story also tells a hopeful story about unity between two completely different civilizations.
September 11th, 2001 will be a day that Americans remember for many years to come. A tragedy that killed nearly 3000 innocent people. Fifteen years have passed since that infamous day but it will live on through history forever. Although it will never be forgotten, people tend to read up on the events every year or two, especially around the time it happened. As a way to remember or mourn and gain more knowledge on the attacks, people will often read articles or look at photographs of the event. The article “America marks 15-year anniversary of 9/11 Attacks” and Thomas E. Franklins photograph taken on the day of the attacks serve as a way for people to remember and get that information in their own separate ways.
Three great accomplishments done by the Soviets that should be remembered and out into Soviet textbooks are their space races, military strength, and the Great Terror. The Soviet Union was the first country to ever send space satellites. At the time not even the United States had made any discoveries involved with space. Next to the space race discoveries, the Soviets also had extremely well military strength. They did spend more than the U.S but the advancement in their military strength was greatly larger. Both accomplishments were amazing but another life changing event that should be placed into Soviet textbooks is the Great Terror. The great terror was a tragic time for the Soviets and for it to be remembered by their future generation
In addition, the image "Firefighters at Twin Towers attack" Photograph by Todd Maisel by is distinctively visual as it challenges perceptions about the rescuers being invincible as they are presented in a defenceless state. The image depicts the struggle of the rescuers from the impact of the destruction of the 9/11 attack on the twin towers in New York in September 11th 2001. The composer portrays the image of the rescuers being a protection and guardian for the man as they carry him away from the destruction and smoke behind them. This is visually represented through the symbolism of firefighter’s uniform is ironic of them dishevelled and covered in ash showing them as invincible and getting away from the attack. Also, the close proximity of the three figures emphasizes seeking safety through connection. Furthermore, the image distinctively depicts the idea of the rescuers being defenceless through the gaze of the figure on right is directed at the camera, imploring whilst the two other figures
The Terror of History: On the Uncertainties of Life in Western Civilization by Dr. Teofilo R. Ruiz centers around the methods in which people cope with major historical tragedies comprising of the human condition. He categorizes these coping mechanisms into religion and the world to come, the world of matter and senses, and the lure of beauty and knowledge. To connect the reading with the History 2C course, the subjects of mysticism, heresy, and witchcraft are particular examples of how the masses utilized religion for the purpose of discovering life’s meaning and justifying the world’s destructive nature. Essentially, I agree with the practice
The young, innocent, promising lives of our past drive emotions through artistic expressions that can be displayed though many outsources. Upon our day to view the art gallery, I entered the gallery feeling apprehensive that I would view any piece of art that I found relatable or even one that I found any interest in. I was wrong in my assumptions and found a beautiful painting named “Console” by Barlow Palminteri. Tasked with describing what the painting looks like, what it means to me, as well as my overall connection with the painting is what I’ll discuss within this paper. The painting’s colors, sizes, shapes, and artistic aspects drew me into its beauty and torment. Likewise, the painting reminded me of my youth that roused many different
The painting ‘The Surrender’ is brought from a viewpoint that today’s millennials have a narrow minded view of America and the rest of the world. It enforces the thought that people only care about their “heroes” of the entertainment industry. Another point it attempts to show is that America views Radical Islamic Terrorism as its primary enemy.
There are three main aspects of this painting, each representing a different aspect of society. The first and lower part of the painting shows the working class, gathered in desperate and impoverished lines. This shows the lack of compassion available in the American economy.
The American civil war was arguably the darkest and bloodiest chapter in the history of the United States. The work is a depiction of how ruthless the American civil war was. Typical of Mayer's work, the piece induces a combination of sadness and remorse of what transpired during the civil war. This paper is going to demonstrate that the painting is performed in sfumato style, and this artwork is aimed to serve as a constant remainder of war horrors. .
In art, there are qualities that speak louder than words. It expresses many different messages and emotions and each person has an experience different from the next. In this paper, I will be discussing two artworks I encountered. The piece is a good example of how people can encounter different experiences in one piece. I attended the Orlando Museum of Art a while back with family and overall enjoyed my experience. On my visit, I found the museum quite impressive and felt a deep connection with specific pieces.
A similarity between the two paintings is evident in the use of composition and background. In the “Hands of protest”, although it is a big painting as its size is …/width is long, the main point of focus is still the person. As the man is the focal point, this composition can attract the viewer’s attention as no other object can divert focus. In spite of the dark background in a large area, it doesn’t compete for focus with the man. The background plays a helping and supporting role that gives a claustrophobic and stifling feeling to the work. Through this, composition highlights the emotional aspect of the painting, strengthening the character to become a dominating point. Additionally, for The Weeping Woman, the woman is also the sole focus
