I was always fascinated at the extravagant colors, bells, jewelry, and the overall costume as a whole. Although costumes contribute to Indian cultural identity, it can also be used as an indicator of social status (Shukla). This could be because the fancier outfits indicate more wealth. One part of the costume is the pallu, which is very colorful and drapes over the torso before being tucked into a kamarbandh. The pallu is very significant and has intricate designs. In addition, the material is very fancy and depending on how one wears the pallu, it can have different meanings. One reason why women cover their head with a saree pallu is for religious purposes; this is a way to obtain maximum divine grace and blessings. Another reason women cover their head with a saree pallu is to contain the humility and respect for others in their own mind. This meaning suggests that Indian culture is very aware of how they treat people around them and also how everyone is perceived to others. Furthermore, covering the head with a saree pallu at a temple shows respect for Deities. This suggests that Indian culture really respects their Gods and uses their attire to worship their Gods. In Kathak, women usually wear a lehenga choli, which is a long skirt with a wide, circular cut that extends with each …show more content…
Each costume could be different depending on the dance, but the general idea is that traditional costumes are very colorful, bright, and attractive. Because they have to be on stage, these costumes must be colorful and attract attention, which also support the Indian cultural identity that dance is important and that costumes help amplify this importance. In addition to attire, jewelry is also important in traditional dance. This includes heavy gold jewelry such as necklaces, bangles, and earrings to complete the look. During their performances, I remember that the dancers had bells that were heard with every beat and it seemed to be in tune with the music. However, I could not pinpoint the location of the bells because their dresses were so long. It was not until they made a 90-degree angle stance which lifted their dresses a bit from the floor did I notice that the bells were wrapped around their ankles. These bells are called Ghunghroo which shows the dancer’s skilled footwork and timing with the music (Townsend). Whenever they stomped their feet, it always got my attention because the bells would tinkle on beat with the music. Dancers might also have henna on their hands and feet as well to further complete the look. I thought it was interesting how each outfit supports the dancer’s movements based on how the dancer moved because I imagine

India’s ancient clothing had a small variety that mainly consisted of silk and cotton. Ancient India was one of the first places to grow cotton which made it very popular. Men and women’s styles were different from each other. Men would wear a dhoti which was a cloth that would wrap around their waists and was knotted in the back. Some men also wore turbans. Turbans are a headpiece that is used to cover their hair. If they didn’t wear a turban they would put their hair in man buns and keep their beards short or shaved. Men in India continued to dress like this for thousands of years. Women would wear cloth wrapped around them similar to what Greek women would wear. A sari and lehengas, is “a garment worn by Hindu women, consisting of a long piece of cotton or silk wrapped around the body with one end draped over the head or over one shoulder. “(Stanford.edu). To start off, the grandeurs of Hindu weddings are quite interesting. In many Hindu weddings, the bride and groom’s apparel is very cultural and elegant. The bride wears a long intricately designed dress that is wrapped. It is called a saree or a lehenga. The bride’s outfit will usually be in red and white, and so will the groom’s, because red is the most auspicious color in the Hindu religion as it resembles the color of a new life. The groom will also wear a traditional outfit called a sherwani, and formal headdress called a sehra. Flowers are integrated majorly in Hindu weddings. They are used during a Pooja, which is the worship of the various Hindu gods, as a sign of respect and prayer so that the gods will protect their family and household, bestowing prosperity. There are a number of pre-marriage celebrations that are carried out, including the engagement and other days on which families and friends get together and rejoice. Other pre-marriage celebrations consist of Mehndi, Sangeet, and Tilak. Mehndi, also known as henna, plays a great role in the wedding celebrations. There is a whole day devoted to the Mehndi Ceremony, which is performed by the bride’s side. There was a banquet hall booked for the Mehndi ceremony and close to three hundred guests were invited. There was singing and dancing to traditional music, remarkable diversity of foods, exquisite decorations with an elegant assortment of mostly yellow flowers. The bride’s friends and relatives performed wonderful dances. The girls applied henna on the bride’s hands and feet, making traditional designs and patterns. The henna is supposed to symbolize passion and the strength of love in the marriage and so the bride has to keep it on for a long time. The bride was dressed in light yellow and white clothes, the colours symbolizing purity. After the Mehndi Ceremony, the bride is not allowed to the leave the house until on her marriage day. Between the Mehndi Ceremony and the marriage day there is a night devoted to Sangeet. Sangeet merely just means music. It is mostly considered the most enjoyable and entertaining night as friends and family just dance all night long. Sangeet was held at the bride’s house and mostly the friends and relatives of the bride

Modern Indian designers are also laying huge focus on TUTUs (layered skirt) and tiered ghagras with ethnic tops, cholis or kurtis. And like always sarees continue to find a place in the season’s festive fashion. Custom-made sarees for little girls are easily available. These sets usually come with a blouse, petticoat and saree. The pleats are pre-made and can be draped within minutes with the least effort. The waist of the saree has a drawstring band that keeps the attire intact as the child runs and plays. Kurtas with Patialas or dhotis are also a big hit this season, not only because of their style quotient, but also their comfort value. When it comes to boys fashion, designers these days
Red is also the color that brides typically wear on their wedding day. Another color that is seen throughout the Indian culture is black, which is used to ward off evil. Often times when infants many Indians received a black dot on their chin to ward off any evil spirits. White is also an important color in Indian culture. It is the color that is worn at a funeral celebration and is the only color widows are allowed to wear. Some of the other colors that are seen in the Indian culture are blue, green, and yellow. Each of these colors have different meanings depending on religious beliefs.
Many people hear the word culture and the first aspect that comes to mind is where they are from; I don’t look at culture the same way. I hear the word culture and I think of traditions, beliefs, morals, and things we value in my family. All of these points are just different aspects of culture that people may not always think about. Even though major parts of my culture may clash at times, being academically driven, being focused on sports, and being family oriented are all aspects that are important to me and my cultural identity.
