The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is located in Richmond, VA. My wife and I decided to take a trip there on August 29th, specifically for this assignment. There were many interesting exhibits there that caught my eye and we spent the better part of a day exploring it all. Although not directly related to what we have been studying, one of the exhibits that I found most interesting was Japanese Tattoo: Perseverance, Art, and Tradition. This exhibit’s was created by artists and photographer Kip Fulbeck. The reason behind choosing this exhibit is because I have mixed feelings about tattoos. While I personally would

Many individuals were shown naked from the back. For most of the subjects, the amount of artwork shown goes down from their neck to just below the buttocks. Some images even cover the chest and belly areas as well. There is an amazing amount of detail that goes into these pieces of art. It takes a lot of dedication from both the artists and the subject to have these items completed. Most require multiple visits to the tattoo artists and hours of work per visit. One interesting fact that I learned is that even though it is known as Japanese tattoo, having a tattoo is actually considered quasi-illegal in Japan (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 2015). Kip Fulbeck tells us in this video that even having a small tattoo can prevent him from going into health clubs and bath …show more content…
He specializes in what is called Shichibu, which is basically a type of tattoo sleeve that goes 7/10 of the forearm (Tatu-Tattoo, 2012). There is one particular piece by this artist that sticks out. It is of a young to middle aged Asian woman, and her tattoos are on her arms in the form of the 7/10 sleeves and partial chest piece. What is interesting about this tattoo is the use of color and the different images that show up on each of her arms. One side seems to have a dragon or koi fish, while the other seems to have some sort of demon that appears to be eating a snake.
A third photograph that is especially interesting was one of a snake done by a tattoo artist in San Francisco named Luke Stewart. His piece is a full back piece that appears from the subjects shoulders to their upper thigh and along their back. It is of a snake twisting and winding through what looks like a lotus garden. There are dark clouds as a background that make the rest of the image brighter and seems to come to
In this art piece, the artist incorporates mixed media. Utilizing, acrylic paint, resin and “photographs of various limbs, insects, and flowers.” The figure in the midst of the artwork is a naked woman. Tomaseli was known for intricate paintings he created within the “late 1980s.” This artist used real objects within his work, such as medicine pills, marijuana leaves, insects and other cutout elements. This artwork can be located at the James Cohan Gallery. “Tomaseli lives and works in Brooklyn,
The George Rogers Clark National Historical Park is a 26 acre historical park in the Midwest Regional Office located in Vincennes Indiana. Over the weekend of August 29th, 2015 my family and I visited the George Rogers Clark Museum. My wife and I actually live very close to Vincennes Indiana, as it is only a 25 minute drive and we frequently visit Vincennes for shopping and dining. While we do visit this town about once a month, I do admit that I have never been or paid a lot of attention to the memorial. The memorial itself is quite interesting to look at from afar as you drive past it, but you can’t really appreciate what it has to offer unless you take the time and visit the site in person and really admire its history.
The illusionistic brushwork denotes the bulky drapery folds that are wrapped around the body.3 Behind his head is a large golden circle that could either qualify as a large halo or a sunset in the distance. His left foot is slightly lifted and is resting on the base of the writing desk which highlights that this artwork is three

Whether pride, fear, or peace, art is intended to make the viewer feel an emotion. The visit to the St. Louis Art Museum had me excited to discover a new revelation. Being the second time that I had visited in two semesters, I was looking forward to a new angle to take, writing about some of my favorite pieces I was unable to include in my last paper. This semester we have been focusing on the Renaissance era (1300-1700), also known as the Rebirth. During this time, scholars and artists looked back towards the classical learning. Purposefully looking past the middle-ages, they focused on the classical past of Rome and Greece. During this time period many works of art were created, however, throughout this semester every major artist we studied
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond at a glance is a modern metropolitan building that displays a vibrant exhibition of Byzantine art found in the Medieval and Byzantine wing. They are grouped together because they share a progression of time occurring in the heart of Europe roughly from the 1300s until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The exhibit begins with displays of medieval art of Western Europe. It further progresses to Byzantine art arranged in broad categories ranging from pre-Christian art, liturgical material, secular material and a display of coptic textiles. Although small scale, a few art pieces prominently featuring the human figure stood out in particular.
It must have been 13 years or so since I have been to the art museum, back in elementary school, on a one of a kind field trip. 13 years is way too long to have been away from the art museum, as my experience this year reminded me that. It was a beautiful, sunny October day, although it felt like July, and it was an even better day to talk a walk through the vast, mesmerizing pieces of art that the museum has to offer. The North Carolina Museum of Art provides an abundance of artwork from various time periods, cultures, and one can find art anywhere from Egyptian, to classical, to modern and contemporary art. The artwork that the museum provides not only displays an abundance of artwork, but
Tattoos were given to distinguish rank a person's rank as well as to protect their health and spiritual well-being according to PBS. Traditional Hawaiian tattoos are very intricate, precise, symmetrical, and always involving a pattern and shapes of some sorts. Men would mostly receive tattoos on their arms, legs, torso, and face while women would have it placed on their hands, fingers, and tongue. I say “receive” because it was the kahuna that decided what kind of tattoo a person were to have and when. The
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is an art museum in Richmond, Virginia and was built on March 27, 1934. The Virginia Fine Arts Museum is one of the top art museums in the United States. They have a vast collection of exhibits including American, African, East Asian, Ancient, 21st century and many more. My favorite exhibit is The McGlothlin Collection of American Art. This exhibit caught my eye as soon as I walked in the door. There were many astonishing paintings that had a lot of emotion, but one stood out from all the others. The artist, Beauford Delaney, painted Marian Anderson.
The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview about my experience attending the Philadelphia Art Museum on March 15, 2013. The museum is Located in Philadelphia, PA and the exhibition that caught my attention was Journeys to New Worlds it explores the artistic exchanges between Spain and Portugal and their colonies in the Americas and Asia during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. (The Philadelphia Museum of Art, p. Philadelphia Art Museum).
Perhaps illness so influenced the artistic style of Van Gogh, but the picture turned out completely different to all that the artist wrote so far. This is not a Van Gogh, who was known. In the canvas, there is tension, anxiety, dense colors and warm shades of olive-mustard. On the contrary, here there is some kind of lightness, airiness, and transparent weightlessness. On the manner of execution, the pattern resembles Japanese prints: iris field full of peace, a lightness, and transparency. "Irises" are simple and unique, they are striking in their serenity and the ability to remove the internal stress of everyone who saw at least reproduction. Painting simply breathes watercolor, translucency and make to look at it more than one hour.
Art gallery and art museum are two different types of structure. The major difference between them is that the purpose of the art gallery is to go to discover the artist’s work and with an interest in buying their art. So it's basically a small business to promote and sell art.

The artwork is one of the main ways to express the culture of a region or a country. Therefore, art has played a very important role throughout history. When talking about art, the first thing that comes to most people’s minds is probably that art is a painting or it is a sculpture. However, art has many forms of expression, and it closely connects to human’s daily life. Besides paintings and sculptures, art is everywhere around us. I am always interested in how people have linked art with daily life throughout history. For this reason, the two pieces of artwork I chose from my visit to the Museum of Fine Arts are both objects that can be used in everyday life: one is the mixing bowl and the other is an incense burner. Though they are from different cultures, have different making processes, and have a different purpose in usage, they both are good examples to show how artists tried to apply art using different techniques to human’s daily life.
For finding out why tattoos are discriminated in Japan, first people need to know how the word “irezumi” originated from. Back to 1910, one of the well-known Japanese litterateur, Tanizaki, publicized a short story which named “The Tattooer” in English. In the story, a gigantic spider was inscribed by a tattoo artist on a beautiful and young woman’s body. Since then, the woman’s beauty takes a demonic and compelling power and “irezumi” also takes a deep impression for Japanese.
