Although pope urban said the christians were fighting to save their brothers, the crusades was mainly about christians taking back their land and power.
Body 1
The crusades may have been religious but it was economic. Not all people who were crusading were doing it for god, but some were crusading for opportunities to get rich . people saw the crusades as an advantage to get rich off of people's choices.in world history: patterns of interaction chapter 14 the crusades it says “merchants profited by making cash loans to finance the journey. They also leased their ships for a hefty fee to transport armies over the Mediterranean Sea.” what this quote means is that the merchants used the crusades as an advantage to gain money by leasing their ships
The Crusades were launched in 1095 by Pope Urban II who acquired enthusiastic and zealous responses to his conquests. A zealous preacher known as Peter the Hermit obtained audiences on his journeys throughout France, Germany, and the Low Countries to begin a campaign. Although the campaign was awfully flawed, it still showed how much interest there was in the crusading idea. Therefore, a year later the French and Norman nobles organized a more respectable expedition that began instituting Christian values into conquered territories. However, the successes of the crusaders encouraged Turks, Egyptians, and other Muslims to set aside their differences in order to expel European Christians from the eastern Mediterranean.
The Crusades started by Chrand, modern day Jerusalem. The ultimate war, between, the Christians and thee Muslims. Most of the fighting was in the holy land. The effects of the Crusades had both a positive and negative effects on the times that they were in and still on us. There was a lot of positive though.istian Knights wanting to take back what they felt they had the right to, The Holy Land.
The crusades did nothing but leave religious hate. Document 1 states that “They also left a bitter legacy of religious hatred behind them. In the Middle East, both Christians and Muslims committed appalling atrocities in the name of religion. In Europe, crusaders sometimes turned their fury against Jews, massacring entire communities.
Reason 1: This topic helps to identify the various accomplishments done by the crusades. Although the expeditions were not successful, it helped europe as a whole, grow as a country. This can be beneficial to students when they are learning about other aspects of Europe, as the crusades had an impact not only on the Holy Land but on the whole of Medieval Europe. Reason 2: Learning about the crusades makes students understand the quote: ‘’He who fails to learn from history is doomed to repeat it’’.
The results on the crusades were more negative than positive. Document 5 states that “Primarily Italians, had established communities in the crusader states.”
Because of the response the people had to Pope Urban II call to arms a wave of religious enthusiasm swept across Europe. In 1096 Peter the hermit created an army of peasants and soldiers. They traveled to Constantinople, this movement was called the peoples crusade. The outcome of the people’s crusade was tragic because almost all of them died.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe entered a period of chaos and disarray known as the Dark Ages. For the duration of the Dark Ages, peasants were desperate for protection while rich landowners were desperate for workers. Thus, a system known as feudalism, in which lords protected peasants in exchange for labor, developed. Under the feudal lifestyle, trade slowed to almost a complete stop due to self sufficiency on manors. Education and almost all greco-roman culture disappeared. When Pope Urban II was urgently called to help the Byzantine Emperor, he stepped up in order to conquer the Holy Land of Jerusalem from Muslims. However, while the crusades ultimately failed and lead to religious intolerance, they ended the Dark Ages
I believe that this document can help historians better understand the Crusades because it shows how people of different religions have very little tolerance for one another. The point of this war was to show which religion is the most powerful. The Franks used religion, but they all committed a sin. " Thou shall not kill" from the Ten Commandments, yet they killed anyway.
Throughout history, religion has always been a factor for many events, but was the purpose of the Crusades in the 11th-13th centurys purely religions devotions, or political gain? Evidence from Pope Urban II, a quote from Patrologia Latina, and a speech by the Islamic leader Saladin show just how much of a factor religion was during the Crusades. These people come from different backgrounds and histories, yet they still believe in one thing- is was "Gods will" to partake in the Crusades. Pope Urban II was the main reason that Christian soldiers journeyed to the Middle East to fight in the Crusades. Being in such an influential position, people were bound to follow his word regardless of wealth.
I agree that the Crusades were the best mistake in history. The Crusades involved several groups of Christians trying to conquer the holy lands at Palestine from the Muslims. As these groups of people were traveling to Palestine they met and interacted with people who were different from themselves. These dealings with Muslims allowed European Christians to learn about Aristotle's works, "Arabic" numerals, and techniques of paper production. Since Arabic numerals came from India and Muslims learned paper production from China, Europeans are finally being involved in cultural diffusion. Crusaders also were introduced to luxury goods, such as sugarcane, on their way to Palestine. Once western Europeans had a taste of these luxury goods they were
The Crusades were a holy war that was directed towards Jerusalem and the Turks that occupied the area. The Christians of the Byzantine Empire had their eyes set on Jerusalem and made pilgrimages to the area due to the site’s religious significance. However, when access to the city became restricted, the Christians were provoked and swore that they would reclaim the Holy Land. The Crusades persisted for nearly 200 years, but they failed to capture Jerusalem. Following these many failures, the crusading movement declined due to lack of interest and the considerable amount of danger that came with crusading.
(T) The Crusades negatively affected the world, rather than being a benefit, as intended. (A) The Crusades caused a tension between European inhabitants of the time. (B) The Catholic Church’s image was negatively impacted as a result of the Crusades. (C) Lastly, the primary objective of the Christians was to recapture the homeland; the Christians failed to recapture the land in the end. (T) Because of these three reasons, the world was negatively impacted by the Crusades.
Another aspect that contributes to the statement that the crusades were not motivated by religious factors is that the crusaders wanted more land. Many Crusaders wanted to govern their own piece of land in a new area, so they decided to fight being guaranteed a piece of land; in this era land equaled money, the more land you had, the wealthier you were—religion didn’t get you very far. By having a new plot of land, in a new area the Crusaders would be able to rise above their social status and experience a newfound wealth that would be next to impossible back in their homeland. Through this, we can see the prime motivation of the Western European’s commencement of the crusades was their aspiration for land. Even Pope Urban II, an example and leader for all the people, wanted to fight just to get the Holy Land back. So if the prime example for the people, a leader that everyone looked up to was demonstrating greed and voracity then it would only be natural for his people to follow. Not only did Pope Urban II and officials express tremendous amounts of self-indulgence, but they very well knew what was going on beforehand; the selection mentions that they worked to “prepare” the people for a crusade by changing conditions within their society and economy. The changing of economic aspects portray that the Crusaders were unhappy with their current state of wealth and the easiest way to fix that was to
In 1095, Pope Urban II called for an army to go to the Holy Land, Jerusalem. This was what was later known as the ‘First Crusade’. A crusade is a religious war or a war mainly motivated by religion. The first crusade consisted of 10’s of thousands of European Christians on a medieval military expedition to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims. This doesn’t mean that the first crusade was just motivated by religion. Throughout this essay, I will be suggesting the main reasons of why people went on crusades and which different people went for specific reasons and why.
The crusaders stole gold and valuables from people along the way to Jerusalem although that had nothing to do with their cause. There were even Crusader princes who ransomed jews for money showing how even the leaders of the Crusades just saw this war as an opportunity to expand their wealth. Many European nobles did not see the crusades as a religious fight they simply saw them as an opportunity to increase their land holdings and to gain riches from the conquest. How can one be fighting a holy war if they don’t even have holy intentions. The answer is the cannot, if one personally gains from an endeavor it cannot have a holy cause.
