Prologue
We stood on the beach watching the ship sail away from us, they refused to take us any further. So there we stood watching, waiting, and praying for the best. It was just us women and children, the men had gone ahead and scouted out the area. We could still just barely see the ship on the horizon, fading into the distance. None of us dared to more for fear of losing sight of it, so we stood there, and did not move until none of us could see it. Then we stood some more, and waited until the men came back saying it was all clear. We all turned around at the same time and didn’t dare look back, our new life had begun, and that meant we were on our own.

“Ah!” I screamed falling backwards and crashing into the table.
Orion came

Why can’t he just be normal, and what is he doing here anyway? Oh my God! Was he just standing outside my door like a stalker! No, that’s just crazy!
“Yes Orion,” I replied irritably “I’m fine.”
“Good,” he said standing up. “Because I wanted to talk to you.”
Oh NO, no, no, no, no, no. Ugh! Not today, not again! The shock must have shown on my face, because he quickly said “No, not about that, the governor picked me for the night watch and I just wanted to let you know.”
“Oh?” I said alarmed.
Wow, I can’t believe the Governor actually chose HIM of all people to keep us safe. This must be a joke. Yes, it’s just a joke. There is no way Governor Burneswick would allow Orion, mind you it’s ORION, to go on night watch. The Governor’s probably hoping he’ll be killed by the Natives. Oh God please help us.
“Is it really that surprising?” Orion asked.
“No, no not at all,” I lied “I was just was so happy for you I couldn’t hide the happiness on my face.”
“Oh, ok,” He said “I’ll see you later then?”
“Yes of course!” (Sarcasm folks, sarcasm)
“Bye!”
“Bye.”
“Finally he’s gone, Now what was I doing again?” I said rubbing my sore toe. “Oh! Yes! That’s right. I was…yep, I have no clue what I was
One day in 1983, there was a boy named Crock. He was a funny kid. His mother was in jail for using a wand and turning people and things into frogs.
In reading the second half of Chapter 5 there was a lot of key points that Croteau discussion within the overarching idea of ideology. Some of the situations he discussed talked about how people within these ideologies are working to show others who they truly are, not who they are perceived to be. One of the examples, of this nature, that most caught my attention was the industry of rap music. This quote by Croteau is what stuck out to me most. “While some politically radical male rappers critique the institutions of society of being racist, the lyrics and imagery of their music are often sexist and homophobic” (Croteau 176).
“No, not at all. Actually, the exact opposite. You said everything right, I think I’m in love with you too.” She exclaimed.
Stephen Crane’s direct relation to this experience has sparked a much more intense reality. Four characters are placed in a life or death situation, which births an analytical perspective of existence and man’s place in the universe. These men, all of which are unique in their respective roles, unified under a common purpose. This attribute speaks volumes regarding humanity as a whole. The most important aspect of living beings is to survive and we will band together to resist extinction. The remnants of this story asks a plethora of questions: What is humanity’s true role in the universe? If man is part of nature, why is there a resistance to his fate? Is life random or is there a method or order that governs all things? Can we view this story as an example of man’s triumph over his destiny? These questions, coupled with a sense of deeper meaning, are just another way of asking life’s most common and perplexing question, “Why are we here?” “The Open Boat” appears to be superficial but actually stirs questions within the human subconscious for a deeper sense of
After saying our goodbyes, Third Brother and I went straight for the ship because it's scheduled to leave in thirty minutes. Before we could board the ship, we had to go through security, which wasn’t that bad. We found our seats in the bottom deck and got ready for our long journey at sea. After what seemed like weeks at sea I found time to write back to Aunt Baba when something hit me, ‘’maybe I could go visit her next summer?” As that thought traveled through my mind, I heard somebody yell “we’re almost there, I see land!” I was so excited after long weeks at sea that I stopped everything I was doing and went straight to the top of the ship. Third Brother was right behind me. As we got closer and closer to England, I could feel my
A wave crashed into the ship, the calm ocean growing darker. The ship rocked and shuddered, moving farther and farther north, until the boat, containing a yet sleeping man, ran ashore. The front of the ship crashed onto the rocky beach, the wood instantly giving in and the ship breaking. The snapping of the wood and the jolting of the waves, finally awoke James.
“I’ve been expecting you!” uttered Cloud Chief angrily. “The ‘sign in the sky’ was to trick you into coming to Galaxy Bee Island.”
All of a sudden I am not on the ship anymore. I'm being haled away by two men in white. They throw me in a padded cell and lock the door behind them. I start screaming, but no one answers. I’m alone in the dark and no one is listening. Until Dean apperses next to me but somehow I know he's not real and it's back to me alone in the dark.
I stood there in amazement watching the ceaseless waves lap at the shore. The water shocked me with its beauty, the deep blue hues and white crests were a picture of paradise. I dropped my towel, sat on it and gazed out onto the incredible expanse of water. Being at the ocean in person is a totally different experience than looking at a picture or video. I sat there as my sisters ran out into the waves, at that moment I formally realized where I was. The overwhelming size of the glorious ocean made me feel very small. Thinking about Aurora, Indiana and what I had around me made me want to never return home. The oceans size, and being so far away from home shattered my inner world and rebuilt it into a more accurate size. For the longest time I thought that I would graduate high school go to a local college and have a job in the town I grew up in. I realized I was living at home with no thought whatsoever as to where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do with my life. My trip to the Gulf of Mexico made me realize that life is full of unknown possibilities, and I had an entire world that I needed to experience. Just going to Alabama had shown me the diversity of a different place. I realized there were other types of people out there, not just “farm boys” wearing boots and spitting dip
I got really sick from the cold air. Alisha isn’t here with me anymore. They separated us. Every night they come over to us and take the dead bodies of the people that died of disease and starvation. They throw their dead bodies overboard. Space is very limited. I have splinters and scratches all over my body from when the ship starts. The woman next to me is the nicest person on this ship. Her name is Sylvia. She got separated from her husband and daughter. I saw them take the men away. They packed them in with leg irons.
I jumped up, racing towards the side of the boat. We’ve finally reached our promise land. I started crying tears of joy. A new adventure finally awaits me, perhaps a new life or a family as well. We docked our ship, and passengers unloaded, me following as
In the three seconds I spent longing, the monstrous storm subsided. I peered through the briny mist and saw chunks of tin debris drifting by and the captain floating further out to the sea. I swam over and latched onto a piece of the paddle wheel. Then I grabbed a hold of the captain’s collar and hauled him toward me.
The next day I was woken by Parker. He brought me to the screen, there was a new message he said. When the two of us arrived at the screen we saw Alex waiting for us. The reply that we had waited for was “Your commander should know would you tell them, Parker?”
The sound of the emerald green ocean water crashing against the shores filled my ears. Children ran along the shore, smiling from ear to ear while laughing amongst each other clearly enjoying their day. Some people were searching contently for sea shells, that were visible for miles. I looked out at the ocean, it stretched out far into the horizon; as far as my eyes could see. There were jetty’s that were perfectly placed within the ocean. I could smell the salt radiating off of the water. I had been waiting for this moment for a long time; I dashed into the ocean I’d been waiting for for the past
“You what?” I laughed. "For a moment I thought you said you were scanned by aliens." My forced smile faded at the look on his face. "Sit down. Let me get you some wine." I ran to the kitchen. My heart raced. When I returned, he was
