Critique of a research article
This paper is a critique of Alison Fuller and Lorna Unwin’s research article ‘Knowledge Workers’ as the New Apprentices: The Influence of Organisational Autonomy, Goals and Values on the Nurturing of Expertise’ Vocations and Learning’. Professor Alison Fuller, formerly of the University of Southampton, has been Chair in Vocational Education and Work at the Institute Of Education (IOE) since September 2013 while Lorna Unwin is Chair in Vocational Education at the IOE.

This research article explores the concept of apprenticeship model in the context of the professional formation of knowledge workers and was carried out within a project funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), ‘Learning as Work: Teaching and Learning Process in the Contemporary Work Organisation’. This project intends to break new theoretical and methodological ground by examining the interplay of the organisational context with processes of individual/group teaching and learning at work. Hence, the emphasis unavoidably leads to interpretations that reflect the values of the organisation and Fuller and Unwin’s world.

With this in mind, this paper will examine the merits of the research by focusing on the strength weaknesses, as well as limitations, of the claims it presents.
