Critical thinking traits are parts of a person’s character. Many critical thinking traits are difficult to acquire to a full degree, or to act in a consistent way. As thinkers, we can improve in each of these traits and can develop these traits over time. Being able to fully consider yourself as a critical thinker, developing all of these traits must occur. These character traits can somewhat be difficult to overcome or to improve on certain traits. The two traits, confidence in reason and intellectual perseverance stand out to me the most based on current experiences. Confidence in reason is the habitual tendency to trust reflective thinking to solve problems and making decisions by thinking their way through questions and issues to …show more content…
Personally, I think I do very well in making sure that I am having confidence in reason and not basing my decisions or thoughts based on other people’s influences and without me knowing definitely that she had taken the money. On the other hand, the one trait that I need to improve most on is intellectual perseverance. Intellectual perseverance is sticking with important intellectual tasks until a reasonable conclusion as been reached. To start off with, I am a very impatient person. So when I have to wait long periods of time to get to a conclusion or a plan of action, I start getting this feeling of just not caring and just giving up. For example, in our management class, we worked in small groups to write a ten-page research paper on effective communication. Each member was responsible for looking up two sources and create an outline based on their research that they had received. The night before it is due on Monday, we met as a group to pull all of the information and findings together to create this paper. Well, come to find out, two out of the four group members did not do any research. Going into this meeting, I thought this would be something easy to complete and get through fairly quickly. So, instead of working towards putting our paper together, I had to help my group members find research. This is when my lack of patience kicks in and just want to complete the member’s part myself so we get
In a research article by Michael Sheppard and Marian Charles titled, Critical Thinking and Interpersonal Dispositions in Those Commencing Social Work Training, the authors examined the importance of these two aspects. With out interpersonal relationships there would be no social work, but that is hardly the only component to this vast and varied field. While relations to others are a highly needed attribute of successful social workers, being able to critically think through a situation is just as important. Social workers encounter people from all lifestyles, most commonly when in crisis, the client may be so distraught that they cannot successfully evaluate for themselves the situation at hand.
As Paul and Elder point out, critical thinking is self-guided and self-disciplined thinking that assists us in reasoning in a fairminded way (FOCT, 2017). It allows us as humans to live a conscious and consistent life where rationality, reasonability and empathy and present when faced with problems. While I am actively learning how to become a better critical thinker, I have learned that the first step to successfully think critically, I needed to diminish my power to think egocentric. In my professional life, I find myself evaluating situations with more clarity and looking more closely for factual content in order to base my decisions with more
Hello, my name is Evan I'm a UCSB student looking forward to taking summer classes in the San Diego Community College District. I can personally identify with a couple of the qualities mentioned in the article. For example, I never get overly attached to my views or spark debates because of them. Other qualities of a critical thinker that I believe the article missed are intelligent, open-minded, and optimistic
My strongest dimensions of the critical thinking are open-mindedness, perseverance and information seeking. My weakest are intellectual integrity, intuition and analyzing. I think this because these areas needs to be improved. I believe I am deficient in these areas because I lack insight and experience.
A critical thinker is also a human being and somewhat a risk taker, when discussions come up, a thinker always tend to voice own opinions depending on their own personal beliefs, these beliefs will then determine what logically fallacies the conversation will fall into. A critical thinker should also have the ability to reason correctly and try to identify any reasoning that are fallacies, this is why it is so important to know and understand the different fallacies that will interrupt the four components of critical thinking.
By practising critical thinking, you have the ability to solve problems through creative and thoughtful analysis and then have the confidence in your own judgement to make independent important decisions regarding these outcomes.
According to the critical thinking processes, I would like to improve the following four critical thinking habits and skills.
As a Critical Thinker I believe I have the greatest successes in clear thinking and rationally about what to accomplish and what to believe, I can tell when someone is trying to convince another person or myself to perform a bad idea and approaching problems in a consistent and systematic manner. I can also reflect on the justification of their own assumptions, beliefs and values. Although I would like to improve on my weaknesses, they are the ability to think clearly, understand the links and logical connections between ideas, determine the importance and relevance of arguments and ideas as well as recognize to build and appraise arguments and the last one, identifying inconsistencies and errors in reasoning. The ideas that I like to improve
The word “Critical Thinking” in my own words mean is all about what you think can be range in all categories such as Rationality, Self- Awareness, Honesty, Open- Mindedness, Discipline, and Judgments “Critical thinkers draw conclusions only after they have defined their terms, distinguished fact from opinion, asked relevant questions, made detailed observations, and uncovered assumptions. Critical thinkers make assertions based on solid evidence and sound logic.” (Herr, December 2014) all those are some of skills that you will have to use your critical thinking to make life decisions, which I will share, related to, My own personal life, Education, and Human Rights & Laws.
To consider an individual a critical thinker, they must have the ability to show cognitive skills and dispositions. Those two skills are considered to be of equal importance and both are required for
One of the single most difficult concepts that I have come to know in my life is that of trust. Trusting myself and others has always been difficult for me, and is something which I am still improving upon. Trust is placing your full faith in someone or something, despite knowing that at times it will be broken. The more times trust is damaged, the more problematic it becomes to attempt it once more. Yet, trust is a pivotal part of every choice or decision, and so I have recognized that it is crucially necessary to be able to trust. If I had to describe my current state as a person, I would say that I am in the state of trusting myself to do what needs done, to trust the right people, and ultimately achieve my goals.
Critical thinking is utilized by a person who might be having a problem, a need to find a solution. A critical thinker first has to find ways to confront the issues in order to find the best solution. Critical thinking has many different combinations that can be rational, awareness, honesty, open-mindedness, discipline and judgment. When a person is being rational there looking for facts by finding evidence that might lead to solving the problem. A person is aware of his/her surroundings by paying attention to every detail. A person might be impulsive and he/she can recognize their emotions can be impulsive. Being open-mindedness can be negative because the imagination of a person can lead him/her to believe things beyond his/her expectations.
“Critical thinking is multidimensional process that involves decoding, analyzing, processing, reasoning, and evaluating information” (Bethel University, 2013, p.2). There are numerous ways we can demonstrate substantial critical thinking skills. Having a positive attitude is a great place to start not only for yourself but for those around you (Bethel University, 2013). Another vital skill in critical thinking is asking questions (Nappi, 2017). We have been asked questions our whole lives. From tests at school to problem solving at work, we are always asking questions or looking for answers.
The more a person works on their critical thinking, the more they will gain from the lessons and world around them. Each person learns different ways and critical thinking will allow the person to put their own thoughts, experiences, and feelings into each lesson they encounter. If the thinker was not allowed to use their own thoughts, experiences, and feelings into each lesson, they would not be able to achieve the highest stage of critical thinking
Society today requires individuals to develop skills to make informed, thought-driven decisions, rather than quick hasty decisions, in many situations both personally and professionally. Decisions like these are made based on critical thinking skills that are not inherited but developed through many years of training both of the mind and of one’s thought processes. Understanding how thinking occurs and analyzing the thought processes are steps that critical thinkers use on a daily basis (Paul & Elder, 2012). In addition, according to Celuch & Slama (2000), critical thinking is essential to lifelong learning and is developed through improved reasoning and communication skills.
