Week 5 what a journey through this critical thinking class. I have learned so much and how to apply the what I have learned to situations in my life whether it is personal or professional. The 5-step process I think for me was the best of all realizing that there is a method in problem solving. It will work even it the solution is not in your favor all the time. Ms. Sessmons I am happy that you made me dig deeper in my thought process to actual think about things before just writing them done. This also made me look at the way that I answer questions, cause me to be slow to speak listen to the entire situation then apply the correct concept before just giving an anwser. I would highly recommend this class to everybody it is
We are on week four, time is going by fast. I Just got home and went strait to my office, I want to get the class started, I am happy about my graded test last week I did well.

Critical thinking is being able to think clear and rational, having skillful judgement on complex issues, and being able to analyze or evaluate information gathered by using a person’s whole brain. Thinking is being able to take in and process information. Critical thinking helps us understand how others think, learn, act towards other’s etc. “However it is also true that our individual brains td to favor certain types of thinking and learning over others (Abitheira, 2014 p. 2). Critical thinking can be defined in many different ways, and being a problem solver is one definition of critical thinking. Being able to solve problems makes us responsible for our reasoning and critical thinking skills to brainstorm
My name is Alexis Batiste, but most people call me “Lexi”. I am currently a Junior at Cal Poly Pomona. I reside in Long Beach California, but during the school year I have an apartment in Pomona. I am pursing a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. After graduation, my plans are to attend Loma Linda University to earn a graduate degree. I would love to become a specialist in sports medicine as well, but for now my dream is to work with young athletes. I want to help them exercise and treat any injuries that they encounter while playing a sport. I want to help my patients live a healthy life by helping them stay fit.
In our lives there are many different cognitive biases that can interfere with our ability to solve problems and/or make rational decisions. One that I think is especially problematic, and has been for quite some time, is representativeness heuristic. This is defined as the tendency to make judgments about a group membership based on physical appearances or the match between a person and one’s stereotype of a group rather than on base rate information. And essentially, a stereotype is the use of concepts to make generalizations about a group of people. (pgs. 252-253) Stereotyping in this country is, and always has been, a huge problem.
“Most: Conger (1991) states in many instances an executive will overtly or covertly influence a team’s proposal, perhaps by picking team members whose opinions are already known, making his or her preferences clear in advance, or signaling opinions during the recommendation phase. If that is the case, the decision maker becomes a de facto member of the recommendation team and can no longer judge the quality of the proposal because his or her own biases have influenced it”
In chapter 2 the book takes about how positive emotions can impact positive critical thinking, furthermore positive emotions can also impact relationships and your ability to make reasonable decisions. The chapter also followed up on how negative emotions can lead to negative critical thinking. I agree with this, I've had past experiences were I took a positive approach to the situation and they way I thought affected the situation enormously. In high school my history teacher also told us about how her father had cancer and had at least two years. When he was told that he didn’t take on a negative and sad approach like many people do when they find out something as crucial as having cancer. Unlike others he took on more of a positive approach
The most impactful elective course that I took in my undergraduate program was PHIL211 Critical Thinking. My learning in this course revealed the many barriers that I had that were inhibiting my ability to discern truths from falsehoods. When I exposed the defects in my thinking, I was able to overcome the defective biases, prejudices, close-mindedness, intolerance and arrogance distorting my reasoning. Eliminating these to become a more rational and inquisitive thinker. This course encouraged students to think about thinking actively. When doing this I could question previously held ideas about myself and others and evaluate how these ideas could be holding me back in my experiences, relationships, and new opportunities.
1. In a college paper the audience is almost always the professor. Knowing this the author would keep his paper very formal by using proper grammar, and appropriate word choice.and would make sure to add literary devices that the professor looks for. For example, if the professor enjoys imagery, then the student would try to fill his/her paper with that literary device. In certain situations the student may have to read their writing in front of the class. When the audience involves the classroom, one should try to structure his/her paper in a way that would not generalize broad topics, because a classroom scene isn't whole there are many cultural backgrounds to take in consideration. A way to avoid generalization is to not give a single perspective on vast topics. For example, if one is talking about Trump, they should write about a liberal's perspective, as well as a conservative's perspective.

Victor Davis Hanson’s op-ed piece about the dangers of defense cuts demonstrates shortfalls in two critical thinking areas. These areas are “POINT OF VIEW” and “EVALUATION OF INFORMATION,” as described by Dr. Gerras’ paper on critical thinking. Strategic leaders familiar with the Dr. Gerras’ Critical Thinking Model are able to use it to analyze Mr. Hanson’s article. It is imperative that strategic leaders become critical thinkers. They can use Dr. Gerras’ model to identify the various critical thinking shortfalls. There are multiple instances of “POINT OF VIEW” and “EVALUATION OF INFORMATION” critical thinking shortfalls intertwined throughout the op-ed piece .
In today’s current school systems, the question of whether or not schools are correctly teaching students the right curriculum is coming up for debate. In the Article,"Teaching Critical Thinking by Marcia Clemmitt, she goes into extensive research of the U.S. Department of Education’s crisis of standardized testing. Most learning activities include standardized testing which lacks many students to express creative and critical thinking. Critical thinking is defined as the examination and evaluation of ideas, events and arguments in their contexts which introduces students to interrogate assumptions and identifying biases (Clemmitt)Pure critical thinking involves investigating a text more than just memorizing, but to apply theirself in other ways of techniques, meaning schools should stimulate more analytical methods of teaching. This would not only free students from a sheltered test culture,but will allow students to think in a deeper,more passionate way than before.
Many different meanings come to mind when I think of critical thinking. Coming from a family full of educators, principals, and attorneys, I often would hear debates between my family members discussing ways to educate and motivate their students. Many different views and positions were established. I began to develop ideas from my family members and understood the possible relationships and differences that emerged between them. The critical thinking process has amplified my problem-solving skills as well as increasing my growth in continued learning and developing skills. In this unit, I've learned that decision-making is a process that is generally based on your attitude at that given time. Bethel University(2013). They’re many ways to improve our critical thinking while watching this video I learned five important tips on how to improve my critical thinking. Number one is formulate your question which means know what you’re looking for and decide if it suits your needs. Number two is gather your information so you can have a clear idea of your question. Number Three is apply the information, something you do by asking critical questions. Number four is considering the implications, which means think about the long term effect on your decision. When defining the term “critical thinking” it can seem overwhelming and daunting, especially for young learners. In laments terms, you are teaching your student how to think for him or herself when it comes to problem solving. Instead of giving the student the answer, you give them the tools to discover the answer him/herself. Critical thinking is an important component of any classroom. No matter the age group, these skills stay with a child for the rest of his or her life. As a teacher, it is important to understand what critical thinking pertains to and how to structure part of your lesson plan around developing critical thinking skills.
