Many leaders past and present in society have influenced the development of Army leadership. One of the most influential leaders is James Earl Rudder. Rudder enlisted in the U.S. military in 1932 as a commissioned officer in the Army Reserves right after completing his degree in industrial education from Texas A&M. In 1933, Rudder became a teacher and taught football at Brady High School later becoming a football coach and teacher at Tarleton Agricultural College. Rudder married Margaret Williamson in June 1937 whom he had five children. Rudder was called to active duty in 1941, approximately two years after the start of World War II (WWII). In 1943 as a Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Rudder took command of Second Ranger Battalion, later named Rudder’s Rangers (Todd IV & Knape, 2010).

The world that Charles Frazier bases his novel, Cold Mountain, on is ridden with hardship and desolation. People in this world are either forced into war or subject to isolation. Main characters Inman and Ada seek to find comfort in each other in this horrible, decrepit world. In this novel, Frazier demonstrates the human condition in the characters’ need for love, companionship, and family.

Embers flew from the campfire, and into the starry night sky; meanwhile, the campers, Jackie, Carl, and Jim, sat close to it for warmth. “Now who's ready for a campfire story?” said Jackie. “You can sometimes go a little overboard, so Carl is taking the wheel.” Carl continued, “Once upon a time” Jim screams, and Carl rolls his eyes at Jim, “May I proceed,” He responds rhetorically. By the time Carl finishes the scary story, Jim has already dashed into the tent, startling his dog, a basset hound named Roxy. Carl along with Jackie look at each other in regretful worry, as they walk towards Jim's tent.

The setting of Alistair Macleod’s short story, The Boat, complements the setting of Alden Nowlan’s poem, Warren Pryor.  Each of these writing pieces contain the element of a smaller town with a tight knit community.  In the short story The Boat, our community is a Nova Scotian community whose primary industry is fishing.  This results in most of the members of the community partaking in the fishing lifestyle.  Another influential location this writing piece takes place in is inside of the house, “which was one of about fifty that marched around the horseshoe of [his] harbour,” (Macleod 263).  Most of the homes in this town are situated close to the water as it is there where most of the men work as fishermen.  Inside the house was his father's room where “magazines and books covered the bureau,” (Macleod 265).  It was in their father’s room where the children discover their love of reading and become more dedicated to their schooling.  Both the short story and the poem contain the setting of a school, which is symbolic as it is their education that allows the characters to be free of their obligations and the way of their town.  Finally, the setting takes place on the Jenny Lynn, “she was what Nova Scotians called a Cape Island boat and was designed for the small inshore fishermen,” (Macleod 262) and it is on this boat where the father and son make their final journey out to sea.  Likewise, the poem Warren Pryor takes place in another resource based community, however, this

The short story The Boat by Alistair MacLeod is narrated by a man who comes from a fishing family. His mother’s side of the family has forever lived and worked by the sea and continues this tradition. The narrator’s father always wanted to be an academic, but worked by the sea to support his family. The parents’ characters seem to clash in many aspect of their lives and this is very evident in the passage.

Even though this world is a horrible place to live in and bad things happen every single day this world still continues to amaze me with how evil it has become. Last year there was a shooting in Florida 2016, with 49 people killed and 58 people injured. We as a nation didn't think it would get worse and if it did, not so soon. It is no surprise that this world is getting worse and worse, because Jesus said it would before He came back. Even though we knew this world would get worse we didn't know how. Now we are seeing how evil man has truly become.

Would you sacrifice your life and happiness for someone else to give them a life of perfection? Alistair Macleod; raised in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, known as the protagonist and author of The Boat began to realize that his happiness isn't the only thing that matters. He told his father that he will stay by his side as long as he lived. Then he was suddenly gone. Alistair had no idea whether his father left because the sea wasn’t the right life for Alistair, or for himself. In The Boat Macleod conveys the idea that sacrificing happiness for another can ultimately lead to internal and external destruction through the use of irony, the protagonist's journey, and symbolism.

The guarantee of work, an excellent benefit that offers to employees and the quality of training program at the Seafarers Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship are the reasons why I want to be a Merchant Mariner. A Merchant Mariner career provide an established job and the outstanding of income to the seamen moreover, it also offers a great benefit to cover their family. With the prospect of jobs demand a merchant mariner has opportunities for growth in the marine jobs and it has high level demand to serve the maritime shipping industry, particularly in the private sector like a cruise ship and cargo industry that operate around the world. These private sector depend on the Merchant Mariners to perform preventative maintenance on equipment and delivery cargo on time. Base on the world consumer and the US economy depend on cargo ship and Cruise ships to support gross domestic product.

The book is littered with explanations about fishing. I admit that I frequently got lost in these passages. This knowledge is an important element of the story. When a component of the boat malfunctions, readers know the significance of this to the sailors. Without this, the book would have provided a message that only other sailors could understand. Junger, by supplying this information, wants to make sure that all readers can fully grasp the danger and suspense of the book.

The realms of South Asia and East Asia are both facing significant issues with their population. India and China have faced the most difficulties with the over-sized population and are just beginning to face the effects of the boom. The young adult to middle age population is huge in China (20-45) and is going to cause severe problems in the workforce in the future (see Figure A). The problems are similar in both realms due to similar government regulations that have been put in place over the past thirty years, specifically the “one child policy” enforced. This has caused issues economically, ethically, and religiously affected by the government legislation.

The world will keep turning, but not in this room for this individual. Death Penalty or capital punishment is the sentence of execution for the crime of murder and some other capital crime (serious crimes especially murder, punishable by death). The death penalty was practiced in the United States from since colonial times until today. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 1,289 people have been executed as of this date. 1,115 of which were executed by lethal injection. This is said to be the least painful method of death compared to the other methods of execution, such as the electric chair and firing squad. Lethal injection kills the condemned person more quickly, thus they will not suffer for long periods of time.

Who do you see?” (Debbie Sterling—TED TALK) When Debbie Sterling, founder of GoldieBlox, posed this question during a TED Talk, she explained that her own view of an engineer was that of a man wearing dirty overalls, and working on a train. She explained that before she became an engineer, she thought it was an “icky” profession that was not for her. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence in most STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These subjects are dominated by males in the United States, and factors contributing to this phenomenon begin at an early age. Due to the different treatment of males and females at home, in the classroom, and in the workplace, there is a significant gender gap in the STEM fields in the United States.
