I am pleased to submit my cover letter and Curriculum Vitae in consideration for the position of Senior Associate Dean at the Milken Institute School of Public Health. We are at a pivotal time in our School’s history. As our reputation grows and our contributions to scholarship and practice expand, the ability to lead with creativity, ingenuity, and a passion for public health, is critical to our continued success. As you review my record of managing programs, leading teams, developing innovative solutions, and solving problems unique to our academic community, I believe that you will find that I have the experience, ability, and vision necessary to succeed in this position and help drive our continued success. As the current Interim …show more content…
The opportunity to develop a strategic vision, create student opportunities, empower young people to become leaders, and take academic programs to “the next level” are the reasons I’ve worked so hard to become a leader in the academic community. As an interdisciplinary scholar, I work well with faculty members across the university. Given that I have been employed by several kinds of schools/colleges throughout my career (Humanities, Social sciences, Communication), I understand the differences among how unique colleges operate and the assumptions they may make about faculty and students. And, my background in communication helps me with perspective taking, listening, and advocating for the needs of the SPH. I value diversity and inclusion a great deal and will continuously fight for members of our community who are historically underserved. It bears mentioning that I care a great deal about excellence in instruction. My pedagogical stance is based in the power of the narrative. Whether I am teaching multivariate statistics, persuasion, research design or social and behavioral attributes of public health—I approach it as though I have a story to tell. I want students to learn, of course, but I also want them to be inspired to be their “best self”. I firmly believe that students are our most valued asset. If students believe the school to be their “home” and the people within the school
So far, I have altered how meetings are conducted from last year so that the student administration has more control of communicating ideas to the members. Later in the year, I plan to incorporate additional volunteer opportunities and I want to have more group conversations with the members to hear their ideas and try to merge those ideas into positive changes that can be made. This leadership opportunity is starkly different from that of coordinating a 5k. Being the president of NHS has given me additional exposure to public speaking skills, decision making skills, proper ways to conduct meetings, and ways to present myself professionally. Despite their differences, these leadership opportunities have helped me advance myself in my journey to accomplish my goals. The skills I gained and refined from these opportunities will undoubtedly assist me when trying to procure grants, build connections, and become a research team leader.
While running Black Student Union (BSU) I contributed in organizing school-wide, conversations about diversity in higher education. I’ve also
I am pleased to be writing this reference at the request of Ilona Byrd, who is applying for the Biomimicry Master’s Program at Arizona State University. I have known Ilona for five years in my capacity as a professor at Glendale Community College in Arizona.
This will continue to support my organizations goal of supporting every learner into being college and workforce thriving members of their communities. I would also like to develop myself as an effective leader to have the knowledge and skills available when professional growth opportunities arrive within my organization. Positioning myself as a leader will allow me to develop and implement policies and practices that would support the mission and vision of
I write today to request consideration for the position of Postsecondary Data and Policy Analyst. I strongly believe in the mission of Southern Education Foundation “to advance creative solutions to ensure equity and excellence in education for low-income students and students of color in the South”. I am a recent graduate of the PhD program in Biomedical Sciences with Neuroscience emphasis from Morehouse School of Medicine. We were trained as researchers to “lead the creation and advancement of health equity”. I am aware of the current disparity amongst quality education and low-income families which greatly impacts individuals into adulthood. I have worked with children from lower
Every since I was a young girl I have invested myself in my academics. I always loved coming home and showing my parents my report cards, because I wanted to show them the effort and diligence that I put forth into my academics. As I grew older that passion never faded, and instead of wanting to get that A to show my parents I found myself wanting to get that A to for myself. As a result, my academic achievements have become one of my most prized accomplishments in my life. Finishing off my final months of senior year I am carrying with me a grade point average of 3.97, and as a result of this I am number eight in my graduating class here at Summerfield. The reason my academics have become my most prized accomplishment is because it shows forth the qualities of effort and determination that I have put forth, and those are qualities that I believe a good leader must
My determination and motivation placed me in the top student leadership positions in the program. My sophomore year, I had the privilege of being the Chief of Community Service. One of my instructors drilled the constant phrase in my head, “The chief always goes above and beyond!”. Nevertheless, it is exactly what I did. This was the year where I really broke out of my shell and found my inner drive for being a leader.
Most of the time, I act as the leader in many activities such as group projects and class events. Additionally, I currently tend to the job of secretary of the sophomore class of 2020 with diligence and in an organized manner. Moreover, being a leader possesses more to its aspect because it is not only a role, but a lifestyle. Living this certain way assisted me in constructing my character and formed me into loyal, empathetic, accountable, determined, encouraging, respectful, selfless, honorable, innovative, and passionate student. In fact, it’s not about leading, it’s about serving our fellow peers to rise by lifting each other
Throughout my high school career I have been a part of a wide variety of programs in which my leadership characteristics have been used and expanded. One program I have thoroughly enjoyed is the Jacksonville’s Mayor’s Young Leaders Advisory Council. From being on this council for two years, I have grown more than I imagined I would. I have been the chair for two committees, made business connections, gained experience in law, and been made open to other viewpoints. I have also lead in a more personal setting, as I was a preschool teacher at my church and have been a leader of community groups. What I have taken from being a leader is that it continually challenges you. Even if you may be an expert in your field, you will always find there is something new to experience and learn for yourself. To be a part of Florida Southern’s Honors Program would mean that I would not only get a one-of-a-kind experience in academics, but I would be shaped and well-rounded in leadership so I could excel in my
A true leader stands high on on the pillars of success: dedication, servitude, respectability, and honesty. The mark of a fulfilled life is not one who has collected many awards, not one who has an insurmountable amount of money and fame, it is one who has touched the most souls in his journey of life. A leader destined for greatness will touch many people along their journey to the top. In my short years on this Earth I have made it my mission from the start to leave a lasting impact on everyone I come in contact with and as a student of Howard University I will continue my mission without fault. From birth my parents noticed I had an insatiable thirst for knowledge, a heart of gold and an unconquerable ability to lead. In the 5th grade I was awarded the
According to John Quincy Adams “ If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and becoming more, you are a leader.” Throughout my years in Mater Academy East, I have always strive to get the best grades possible. While inspiring others to do the same. I have been a member of The Cat Network for a year. The Cat Network is a non-profit corporation that is dedicated to save animals from the wrong hands. This non-profit corporation has taught me a lot about the importance of communication, helping out the community, and working in a team environment. I plan to use all my experience to Inspire and help students to achieve their goals.
Karl Menninger once said, “What the teacher is, is more important than what they teach.” Reflecting on Menninger’s statement, professional educators are not empowered by the curriculum, which dictates the classroom material, but the influence of their relationship with their students. My own experience supports this, as I recall my favorite teacher, Ms. Linda Ashby, an AP statistics teacher. She embodies the model teacher by being full of energy, invested in both her school and her students, along with being knowledgeable but yet relatable on a student level. As I develop my teaching skills, I reflect on my time as her student, seeking to emulate her positive traits she exhibited everyday.
Successful teaching occurs when the teacher is able to select the most efficient method for reaching out to each student’s individual style of learning and inspire students to rise to their highest potential. While the responsibilities of a teacher are extensive (as one can serve as a teacher, a friend, a counselor, a disciplinarian, an entertainer, a facilitator), I believe that students should play a big part in shaping own education as well.
I am writing this cover letter to inform you of my interest in becoming an associate engagement intern. I discovered this opening through the Shakopee center for professional student’s program in which we apply for an internship and I really am interested in this particular one.
“What the educator does in teaching is to make it possible for the students to become themselves.” 1A teachers objective should not be to shape the students as a reflection of that educators image, instead they should see themselves as the medium of which the information in communicated, they should see themselves a person who elevates that students to higher concepts of learning, aspiration and liberation. A good teacher must recognize the strength and weaknesses in skills of the individual and class and reflect on how to leverage strength amongst learners to
