Corporal punishment should be illegal at home. Although, others might disagree with the way a child should be punished. Many adults, researcher, psychiatrist, doctors, parents, and teens have negative comments on corporal punishment. Today, all around the world we see parents discipline their kids in many forms of ways like spanking and multiple people see it as child abuse. Before beginning this controversial debate, we should distinguish the difference between child abuse and corporal punishment. Child abuse is when a parent or a caregiver fails to act upon action like injury, death, and emotional abuse combined with physical abuse. There are many forms of maltreatment, which includes neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation and emotional abuse. Corporal punishment is when a parent or legal guardians causes physical pain or discomfort to a child due to misbehaving. Examples include spanking or slapping the child with an open hand or striking with an implement such as a belt, slipper, cane, hairbrush or paddle, and can also include shaking, pinching, forced ingestion of substances, or forcing children to stay in uncomfortable positions. In fact, parents often take it too far when it comes to punishing their child, which soon leads to a bigger issue. Corporal punishment has been around since the Middle age like at school, home, and for when a person convicted a crime. Today, some schools have banned corporal punishment like in Alaska, California, Connecticut, Delaware, etc., because researcher has shown that corporal punishment can cause students more harm and paying less attention in school. What are others opinion about corporal punishment? One parent said,” They’d been spanked as a child, and they turned out “ pretty good” (Polhemus, Betsy, et al.Is spanking an effective punishment). Scott Morefield who is a blog editor for Raising Godly Children argues that,”That spanking and abuse are not synonymous and that corporal punishment has been used by parents throughout civilization. He also notes that support for physical discipline can be found in the Bible (Morefield, Scott. "Parents Should Have the Right to Properly Discipline their Children"). However, many disagree that using physical
Henry VIII was a king of England from 1509 to 1547. He kept his power because he was able to reciprocate some of the suggestions that Niccoló Machiavelli expressed in his book, “The Prince.” Although there were many similarities in how Henry VIII ruled England and what Machiavelli explains in “The Prince,” Henry VIII did deviate from Machiavelli’s tips.
Corporal punishment is defined as the deliberate infliction of pain as retribution for an offense, or for the purpose of disciplining or reforming a wrongdoer, or to deter attitudes or behavior deemed unacceptable (Wikipedia 2014). The line between spanking and abuse is not always clear and is decided on a case by case basis by the state prosecutors and judges and whether the line has been crossed. If asked parents use the word spanking as not just a slap on the buttocks, but a form of corporal punishment that is not severe enough to be classified as abuse. Corporal punishment has been repeatedly associated with child abuse, moral internalization, aggression, delinquent and antisocial behavior, decreased quality of the parent-child relationship, increased behavioral symptoms, later criminal behavior, worse mental health, and perpetration of spouse and child abuse (Gershoff, 2002; Zolotor et al., 2008).
The term corporal punishment means the intentional infliction of pain on the body for purposes of punishment and includes slapping, hitting with objects, pinching, shaking and forcing to stand for long periods of time (Epoch 1). Family researchers define corporal punishment as " the use of physical force aimed at causing children to experience pain but not injury, for the purposes of correction and control of youthful behavior" (Day 83). Spanking is one form of physical or corporal punishment (Epoch 1).

Can the things we do to our children come back and turn out to be used against us and others? “Corporal punishment
Currently, 24 countries have banned the practice of spanking children; labeling it child abuse. However, in America 49 states permit physical punishment by parents (Gershoff). There are mandates that define appropriate physical punishment, but there is truly no appropriate way to hit a child. Parents often resort to spanking in an effort to control their child’s behavior. It is true that most children will immediately respond to the pain that is inflicted upon them and stop the bad behavior. However, it is proven to make children more aggressive towards others. Furthermore, it is not worth the risk of causing life altering psychological impairments. Instead parents should focus on non-violent forms of discipline, such as positive reinforcement and redirection or time-out. Spanking may give parents the immediate satisfaction of changed behavior, but it is not worth the life-time of damaging
Have you ever saw someone hit their child and thought to yourself was that abuse or discipline? Many people understand that punishment and abuse are different, but they don’t know what should or shouldn’t be considered abuse. Theres a big debate on if spanking should be considered punishment or child abuse. Studies have always shown that most abuse goes unreported. There is a point where discipline becomes abuse and that’s when discipline is unfair, anger driven, and inconsistent.

The world has changed in many different ways, but there are still things that need to be changed for the better. Corporal punishment is one of those things. During the industrial revolution in England, there was a mass movement of people from rural areas to booming cities where small, factory towns became industrialized metropolises almost overnight, which created a large gap between the rich and the poor. This phenomenon was similar to what happened to the city of Bombay. This income gap in Bombay exists because of the lack of priority to education and healthcare for all of India during British colonialism. Because of this, only the richest in India’s society reap the benefits of industrialization and globalization. While the government has tried to implement some welfare reforms in India, it has been undermined by the corruption in the government because the rich bribe politicians to keep society the way it is.
