This report will be attempting to answer the question ‘what is design?’ by focusing on the contextual lens of sociology. It will be describing sociology in the context of design, discussing the large impact design has on society. ‘Although sign theories have a long history, Peirce's accounts are distinctive and innovative for their breadth and complexity, and for capturing the importance of interpretation to signification’ (Atkin, 2006). Pierce has contributed not just to the invention of semiotics but his profound work in scientific discoveries, mathematics, philosophy and the founder of pragmatism. Semiotics and Charles Pierce are also connected to both the contextual lens of science and thinking. Design can be seen as thinking as we see the ideas behind semiotics in solving a problem. He breaks design into two areas, material and immaterial, both these areas depend upon specific cultures and people to engage with the designs. Design today is not just one thing, we see it in the creation of buildings (image 5), advertisements and the creation of new technologies (image 6). All these elements rely on people within different cultures and societies to either thrive in sales or for designers to excel. I have discussed design within the context of its connection to sociology through my case study analysis of Paul Frosh, Adrian Forty and many others. Through the discovery of advertisements, stock photography and semiotics, I have seen that design goes far beyond aesthetics and pleasing the eye, design affects societies and has the power to change cultures.
