The Cold War was a war that happened between the United States and the Soviet Union. This War began on March 12, 1947, and ended on December 25, 1991. The Cold War began because of an ideological and political rivalry between the United States and the USSR. This rivalry divided the world into two teams, Capitalism and Communism. Have you ever thought about how the Cold War became known as the Cold War? This period was known as the Cold War because there was no direct military engagement between the United States and the Soviet Union, there was no engagement because of the nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union did not think about anything or anyone else, they wanted what was best for them. They wanted Communism worldwide. The U.S. was able and prepared to respond to any Soviet nuclear attack with the same strike. If this ever happened, it would result in the end of the world. With this all being said, during the Cold War there were lots of dangerous weapons that could kill millions of people. Containment was ultimately used to stop the spread of Communism. President Truman did not like communism because he thought that the United States should not just sit there and watch the expansion of totalitarianism. Containment played a pretty big role in the Cold War, because it stopped the spread of communism. Containment was one of the main strategies used by the United States to stop the spread of communism.
