Confucius was a Chinese philosopher. He was an influential teacher whose thoughts and teachings were centered in improving society through moral acts and honorable merits. For example, he felt people needed to be educated but not for the purpose of getting work, but because he believed it would make the people better human beings. He believed that honesty, hierarchy, sincerity, and righteousness all blended together to change the attitudes of mankind. Confucius was born in 551 B.C.E. during China’s economic and social changes during the Zhou Era. Zhou kings built armies and formed alliances in order to strengthen military. Zhou society was class conscious contrary to the beliefs of Confucius. Confucius believed on the concern of others and their rights. “Never do to others what you would not like them to do to you.” He was never concerned about wealth and status. He traveled in hopes to teach his students and followers such honorable beliefs. Many times he questioned how he would fix a world that was falling to pieces. How would he reshape society? How would he make children respect their parents and elders? Filial piety already existed before Confucius. It was a time when there were numerous wars that occurred due to the conflict that existed between seven states. (Watkins, 2013) These warring states were the Han, Wu, Zhao, Chu, Qi, Yan and Jin. According to Jerry H. Bentley and Herbert F. Ziegler of the book Traditions and Encounters, “This period forced some people to reflect on the nature of society, and the roles of humans beings within society.” The authors continued saying that it forced others to “identify principles that would restore political and social order.” (Bentley & Ziegler, 2011) The principles of Confucianism were established and followed in order to help the citizens of China to live and govern their communities more efficiently.
