Imagine coming home after a day with your friends at the mall. When your parents ask you where you where, you tell them that you were working on a school project with your friends. What did you do when you told them you were working on a project? You were lying. Lying is something everyone has done in their life. So what exactly is lying? The definition of lying is an intentionally false statement. Even keeping silent if you know something is a lie, just a different type of lie than saying something intentionally incorrect. Some people have different views on lying than others. Some people think that telling any lie is fine. Others say that lies of any kind are dishonest and should not be used. Then, there are the people that believe that …show more content…
For example, one quote that supports the claim is, “In the AP-Ipsos poll, 65 percent of those questioned said it was sometimes OK to lie to avoid hurting someone’s feelings, even though 52 percent said lying, overall, was never justified.” (NBC) This shows that the majority of the people who participated in the Advanced Press poll thought that it was sometimes fine to lie, though some people disagreed on their positions. This also shows that many people can not find a definite position because the percentages must overlap, there is no way to get one-hundred seventeen percent in a poll. Another quote is, “‘Not only is lying justified, it is sometimes a moral duty,’ says Cohen. An obvious example is when you’re lying to protect someone from serious harm. ‘But much less extreme cases often call for lies,’ Cohen says.” (NBC) This shows that lying is justified in both extreme cases, like hiding Anne Frank, and lesser cases, such as protecting or defending your friend from something. This proves that it is also sometimes necessary to lie, whether it is to protect someone from severe harm, or just to prevent hurting someone's feelings. Overall, the article, It’s the Truth: Americans Conflicted About Lying, shows that lying is always justified by giving evidence through results and also …show more content…
Nobody wants to lose a friendship over being tired. Nobody wants to be told derogatory things about himself or herself. However, not only white lies are acceptable, other lies are justified to like saving somebody from severe harm. They don’t have to be innocent, you just need a acceptable reason. Radicalists on the other hand believe it is never justified to lie, no matter how extreme the case in question is. They believe that lying is mortal, and being called a liar was a terrible insult on their moral and their dignity. They also believed, and still believe, that a lie that does not really affect anything at all is still unacceptable because it “harms mankind individuality” which is a different standpoint from what is usually thought by the rest of the population. However since we grow up lying from being a toddler, it is impossible to change what we do. We all have lied and will continue to lie all our life no matter how hard we try not to. There is no way to reprogram our bodies to do something we aren’t supposed to. This counters Kant’s radicalist ideas that we should never lie. All in all, the claim that it is always justified to lie for any cause and any reason is correct as we all have started lying at a young age and is an irreversible trait we mature as we get
In the article “It’s the truth: Americans Conflicted About Lying” the author believes that lying is only justified if it doesn’t hurt anyone. The author supports his claim by stating “Apparently white lies are acceptable, even necessary, part of many lives-even though we dislike the idea of lying.” This supports his claim by saying that lying is sometimes necessary. Also, the article states that 65 percent of Americans voted that it was ok to lie sometimes. This also helps his claim by stating that people will lie to protect each other or to not cause harm. The author also supports his claim by stating “Not only is lying justified, It is sometimes a moral duty.” (Randy Cohen) This also supports the claim by saying sometimes you have to lie
Do you believe lying is okay? Paul Gary, Priscilla Painton, and Elizabeth Rudolph wrote an article “The U.S. Political campaign; lies to protect” talking about their prospective on the situation. I agree with this article because sometimes we need to protect others from the truth about how we feel. Also just to keep the person as our friend.
Lying is something you have done, I have done, and everyone to ever live has done. Each and every person that denied that statement, at this moment lied. Situations people lie in is an ultimately different matter in hand. The accustomed, influenced character of a person believes you should tell the truth, endlessly. Nevertheless, justified lies can go to the extent only when you are protecting someone's life or feelings.
A lie is considered a false statement given to fool someone. At some point throughout the day everyone will stretch the truth. Are lies just really some version of the truth or are they bold and deliberate? Lying is discussed in-depth in "The Ways We Lie" by Stephanie Ericsson and in the article "Is Lying Bad for Us" by Richard Gunderman. The two articles discuss the types of lies, reasons people lie and the consequences suffered by all. It can be determined after reading the texts that lying causes undue stress and telling the truth is beneficial in more ways than one.
To many people, a lie has little significance. Some people tell lies as a way to cover something up, make a different name for themselves, or just to make excuses. No matter what the situation, my father has constantly reminded me that the truth will set you free, and as I get older even though I am still in my youth, the more I realize the truth and importance of that statement. To me a lie is a form of disloyalty, the less you respect the person the more you lie to them as a way to cover up your true identity. A lie is when you mislead what is really the truth; where you don’t tell the full truth in order to deceive someone, or you avoid being honest at all. There are several different outcomes to
After reading the articles, it is clear that article 3 resonates with me. One reason is that in paragraph 5 Blanton said,” Being honest all the time is what’s radical—and rare. Many people think they tell the truth, but they don’t because they withhold information. Have the courage, to be honest, and have a relationship with others based on reality. Don’t avoid the issues.” For example, Blanton says to have the courage, to be honest, but I am not courageous enough to tell my parents if I lied because I would get my butt yelled at. The article also points out that in paragraph 11 Blanton says Yes, but we shouldn’t manipulate the truth except for rare times—if you’re hiding Anne Frank in your attic because her life is in danger.” This is important
If someone were asked if they lied before , the majority answer would show that most have and if they answered no then they just showed evidence that most people lie. There are 4 articles that each show there own unique opinion and stances on lying weather they are in favor of it or not. Lying is usually perceived as unjust and unethical but can be used as a way to protect others.
This may sound like an easy task, but after scrounging through these sources, there is no one confirmed definition of what a lie entails. There are however, a few concise details that the majority of these editorials have in common, such as: the intention, the cover-up of the truth, and the ability to delude. These three aspects are the bases for a more concise meaning of the phrase: to lie. A lie from a shared standpoint is as simple as, not telling the truth, but for the purpose of this paper there is so much more to that definition that needs broadening. For starters, lets look at a more descriptive meaning of a lie according to John J. Mearsheimer. In his book, Why Leaders Lie: The Truth About Lying in International Politics, Mearsheimer states that a lie is,” When a person makes a statement that he knows or suspects to be false in the hope that others will think it is true” (16). This definition mentions knowing, which is another word for intention, showing that there is the aim to deceive, but it is still lacking on the other two elements that will clearly make something a lie. Which brings up Fetzer’s article on Disinformation: The Use of False Information, in this text the authors equates a lie to, the intentional, deliberate, or misleading of information, which he refers to as disinformation (Fetzer 231). Fetzer’s description of a deception brings up another key component, which is, misleading; this demonstrates that the ‘liar’ intends to lead his subject away from the truth. The final of these parts to a good definition of a lie is dishonesty, which is what Allen Wood argues in his work, Kant and the Right to Lie. In this critique, Wood attempts to make clearer what Immanuel Kant actually meant in his description of a lie as “an intentionally untruthful statement” (Wood 97). What Wood is saying here is there has to be an element of truth that the
“But little white lies is human nature. Everybody does that.” Lying is Untruthful marks and false statements and mostly everybody does it. Lying is okay but when it comes to specific expectations and serious actions and hurting someone's internal and external feelings.
Every person has some kind of goals, it may be such as changing people's life or even world. Like on the way to every final destination every one will have all kinds of problems that needs to be solved to reach that goal. Is it okay to lie or cheat to obtain that goal? It's really matter of goal if it's righteous or foolish, and to whom lie and cheat.
In order to better understand this poem and analyses it, we need to understand that the author was trying to tell us a story about his life and his struggle with Deceit. Although this story may seem to be about the death of a little child, and his parents, the overall tone is all based around the fact that the author has an ongoing internal struggle with Deceit and his life.
What are lies? A lie is defined as follows: To make a statement that one knows to be false, especially with the intent to deceive. There are several ways that lies are told for instance, there are white lies, lies of omission, bold faced lies, and lies of exaggeration. No matter what type of lie that one chooses to tell many people believe that lies do more harm than good.
People often tell lies to benefit themselves, not knowing that they could potentially be hurting another person. If a person is covering up something that they did, they’re lying. If they want to make a friend feel better about themselves by complimenting them on something that isn’t true, they’re lying. According to Lying is not awful for our society because we’ve been doing it for so long that it has become a habit for people to lie and it doesn’t affect us anymore.
Imagine that you got arrested for no reason when you were at the police station next thing you know you get a random phone call from a strange man? Lying a common thing that people have been doing since the beginning of time. Lying is only acceptable when it can be used to protect and care for others
All we ever knew is laws and rules, growing up we obeyed our parents rules, teachers, school, work, our state laws. Laws and rules is something our life revolves around, we were raised to follow it or else there would be consequences for us to face, whether it be a small one or big. But there are rules that seem quite ridiculous and outraging--this is where our morals come into action, we start to question it, does it seem fair? Just because something is legal it does not make it right, we know if something is ethical or not. Lying is legal but it's unethical, we live in a world where it's illegal to pierce a minor's ear without the parents consent but it's legal to get an abortion without the parents permission or consent. Being legal
