the Condescension Inherent to Censorship
To a population of critically thinking adults, who are capable of evidence based criticism, governmental censorship is not only pointless, but incredibly condescending to their ability to discern the credibility of information. This is of course, to assume that said censorship was being performed to dispose of false information, rather than its usual use of regulating the propagation of ideas that some would baselessly label as dangerous.
One of the most egregious examples of censorship in modern United States history is the censorship of art and other media performed by the FCC. The FCC is responsible for censoring ‘obscene material.’ This ‘obscene material’ includes speech that “criticize, ridicule, “stereotype” or demean individuals or groups because of the religion, race, nationality, gender or other characteristics of the group or individual;” the FCC also regulates for ‘indecent’ sexual content, and ‘profane’ content (1). There are a few issues with this regulation: A) what is offensive is subjective and B) legitimate criticism of the aforementioned list exists. The most convincing argument in favor of censorship is one from the pragmatic perspective of information regulation for the purpose of accuracy. The idea being that if you censor obviously incorrect information, then less critical thought is required to understand a topic, since vapid baseless nonsense will be automatically censored. This idea’s largest problem is that the party responsible for the censoring is not always a non-biased, and can censor in favor of itself.
