Concrete operations Concrete cognitive operations as outlined by Jean Piaget are typically children who are between the ages 8-11 years. Cognitive skills of this group are able to perform inductive reasoning. In addition, objects or events need to be experienced. Some major schemas proposed by Piaget are class inclusion, such as all birds have wings. Another schema is serial ordering, as babies need very small shoes, and children need shoes that bigger than babies, and adults need the biggest shoes of all. The most popular schema referenced on the internet was conservation, which I think is explained best by this one-minute video. To tie this in with previous discussions, I feel comfortable making parallels to behaviorist theories. Children …show more content…

Concrete operation: At this level, providing guidance in grouping may be appropriate, such as, defining the characteristics of a crustacean. Crustaceans are animals that live in the water that have an exoskeleton and molt. A couple of examples of crustaceans are crabs and lobsters. Then ask the child if a shrimp is a crustacean, and why they gave that response. Formal operation: In this schema, a knowledgeable person would be useful in assisting a person in developing correlations between characteristics that are not immediately apparent nor occur 100% of the time. An example would be the correlation between blond hair and blue-eyes, with the alternative of black hair and brown eyes. As these characteristics, may not be immediately recognizable to a preteen. Secondly, one can find examples to counter the preposition. Therefore, in developing a mental model of these correlations is practical. Secondary, the knowledgeable person can inject secondary information to further the understanding of the relationship between blond hair and blue eyes. Those who live in Scandinavian countries, have less exposure to sunlight. Less pigmentation allows for greater production of vitamin D, thus light skin (low pigmentation), blue eyes (low pigmentation), and blond hair a secondary byproduct of lighten of the skin, but does not affect vitamin d production. This demonstrates a correlation between blond hair and blue-eyes, in addition to geographical population who have this
