Concert Review: We Didn T Start The Fire

In the midst of protesting against the Jason Stockley trial on Sept. 21, St. Louis was cranked down a few notches that Thursday evening as the piano man, Billy Joel, took the stage at Busch Stadium. The concert started at eight P.M. and ran roughly two hours long. The show was part of Joel’s U.S. stadium tour, where he toured through various baseball stadiums across the United States. The lights dimmed across the stadium and the stage lit up with Joel perched on his piano, center stage. He and his band began the introduction to the show, with Joel jokingly sampling ‘Ode To Joy’ and then jumped right into his own ‘My Life.’ Between songs, he was genuine with the crowd. Then, he started playing songs originally on his set list and I thought it started to get a little boring,” Bernard said. “Then, he stood at the front of stage with a guitar and started playing ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’ and continued with more of his iconic songs. It was a great experience for a first concert.”
Towards the end, he welcomed one of his roadies to the stage to perform ‘Highway to Hell’ by AC/DC, which is when the show started to become pure awesome. The crowd was all warmed up as the band transitioned into ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire.’
The most powerful moment of the show was the final song when fans began to hear the iconic harmonica tune, which sent everyone cheering. People around the stadium swayed and held up their cell phone lights high together to ‘Piano Man.’ When Joel stopped singing, the crowd all joined in together singing every lyric of the song, enjoying the peaceful night.
Joel thanked the crowd and ran backstage, however, the people were not ready for Billy Joel to end this beautiful show. Soon enough, their cheering brought Joel back onstage to perform five more of his big hits including ‘Uptown Girl’, ‘It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me’, and ‘Only The Good Die
