Con for Uniforms I believe that students shouldn't be wearing uniforms because kids can't express themselves, everyone will look the same, and bulling will increase into violence. First, students will not be able to express themselves. The first constitution guarantees that people can express themselves. My second reason is that everyone will look the same. The first amendment states that individuals have the right to express them selves freely. Having school uniforms may increace in violence. In 1999, Texas University of United Kingdom violence increased 12% after introduction of uniforms. You may argue school uniforms that it deter crime and increase students safety. However uniforms don't decrease crime it increases in violence 12% after
Does the decrease in violence have anything to do with school uniform policies? Educators seem to think so and with good reason. Surveys have proved that schools with uniform policies have had a decline in violence and robbery(“Will school”). A school reported 36% less offense occurrences since mandatory school uniform rules were put in place(COHN, CARL A). How can something so simple as requiring uniforms make that much of a difference? The decrease in robberry can be accossiated with the fact there aren’t as many kids wearing designer clothing. School uniforms don’t use gang colors therefore results in less problems concerning gangs("Should You”). Schools have also reported of there being fewer fights and less troubles with social ranking("Should
A survey conducted by Statistics Canada between 1992 and 1995 in Ontario high schools shows that 91 percent of incidents involving crime and police interventions in schools took place where uniforms were not mandatory. Furthermore, uniforms help school officials in detecting intruders like drug dealers who come unwelcome into the school. Thus, uniforms reduce violence at high schools by discouraging gang fights and making it easier to recognize intruders.
School uniforms would decrease violence in many public schools because they would reduce the amount of theft that may occur, the amount of bullying that occurs on a daily basis, and the amount of attempted or successful murders that occur. Uniforms would reduce the amount of theft that occurs because every student would be wearing the same clothing. If every student is wearing the same article of clothing, students would not be tempted to steal clothing, shoes, or jewelry from one another. Uniforms would also make every student feel a sense of equality.
This is also a reason a majority of school districts in the United States have adopted school uniform policies. Another reason they have adopted the policies is because the school boards believe the uniforms will reduce the crime rate, improve student behavior, and increase student achievement in
Uniforms are argued to positively affect student safety by: lowering student victimization, decreasing gang activity and fights and differentiating strangers from students in school building. Dress codes in public schools would be good, in order to cut down the violence, which would eliminate the problems of
In this paper you will find four main reasons why all public schools should adopt a school uniform policy, and there is a paragraph with a counter argument with school uniforms. There is a discussion on how the crime rate decreases amongst students, how uniforms save the families money, how gang related activities have decreased, and how there is less stress between students and parents. By the time you finish reading this paper, you too should agree that all public schools should adopt a school uniform policy.
One area where school uniforms have been a big payoff is the California Long Beach Unified School District. Since they started requiring uniforms in 1994 the violence in the school has decreased by seventy six percent. During the same period the attendance of these students reached the greatest ever reported(School 1). The reason for this decrease in violence would have to do with the competition over clothes. The teenagers wont beat up the kids for their clothes if they only have their uniforms on(Schools 1). Even though the students may not like the uniforms they mostly agree that they will be safer. One of these students said, "Uniforms make the school safer but I don't like them"(Schools 1).
It is a belief that school uniforms teach students to respect their learning environment and behave themselves, and, therefore improving discipline. However, that assumption isn’t entirely correct. Researchers have actually found that school uniforms don’t make students better behaved. According to a study of more than 4,500 students, those who wore a school uniform did not have fewer behavior problems or better attendance. Forcing students to wear uniforms lead to more problems and misbehavior instead of encouraging discipline. Students could get into trouble if they did not wear their uniforms correctly. Many kids in today’s society cannot stand the thought of someone telling them what to do, especially what to wear. Instead of encouraging respect, uniforms may cause rebellions. For example, in 2009, a group of students at John A. Ferguson Senior High School rebelled against their school uniforms. Instead of following their school uniform requirements, the students wore what they thought would be a better school uniform to school. Not only uniforms don’t earn schools the respect from its students, but it may also lead to more problems.
A school with uniforms will help students focus more on school instead of on their clothing and the price tag on their clothes. According to A bulletin published by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. In the bulletin they state that when the students are wearing uniforms, they are not as concentrated about how they look and how they fit in with their peers. So they can concentrate on their schoolwork. Another reason is that school uniforms may discourage crime and increase student activity. In a 2007 peer-reviewed study found that, in schools with higher rates of sexual violence, sexual attacks were less likely if uniform policies were placed. In long beach california they had manditory uniforms for two years of a district-wide K-8 mandatory uniform policy, reports of assault and battery in the district's schools decreased by 34%, assault with a deadly
School Uniforms could help with getting ready in the morning, reduce gang-related violence, and help with discipline, according to statistics. A problem that is often brought up when discussing this situation is that the uniforms would be too expensive which is a valid point. A parent would see the price as the big problem but from a student’s perspective it’s like taking away their individuality
When my son started school in 2007, he was not required to wear any type of uniform for almost two academic years. As soon as he started first grade, he noticed a big change; a new dress code which makes him wear the same color of outfit as his classmates, a uniform. Many schools in the world use uniform in schools. Brunsma a sociologist at the Virginia university stated in his book that: “The idea of requiring public school students to wear uniforms was first envisioned in the 1980s by then-Washington, D.C., mayor Marion Barry, who believed standardized dress might help public school students succeed as well as those in the city 's Catholic schools. The idea flopped, but in 1987, Cherry Hill Elementary School in Baltimore implemented the first known schoolwide uniform policy "as a means of reducing clothing costs and social pressures on children," (David Brunsma 2004). School uniform put together children of all social class and help them feel more comfortable, School uniforms enhance equality amount student and reduce complexity in schools.
When students wear uniforms, students do not improve in any way. Student’s academic scores do not go higher when they wear a uniform. Researcher Virginia Draa found that “implementing a uniform policy in schools did not have any impact on academic performance”. If schools are hoping for their student’s academic scores to go higher by implementing uniforms, they would be better off without uniforms. Wearing uniforms don’t help a student’s attitude. A 2010 study in a large urban school district in the Southwest found that asking students to wear uniforms did not result in any change in the number of suspensions for elementary school students. Student’s behavior won’t change, if schools wanted to implement uniform. Uniforms don’t have any positive impact on students,
Jahn’s best source comes in the form of legal support of freedom of speech in past cases. However, the Supreme Court has not ruled on the issue of school uniforms. Instead, it lets the states decide if there is a need for uniforms or not. Jahn points
School uniforms: a debate that has been tossed back and forth for years now. The percentage of schools that necessitate uniforms and the percentage of the ones that do not are approximately equal. This conveys a dispute that is difficult to find a definite solution for, due to the ambiguous negatives and positives being drawn between both arguments. Uniforms being a part of school systems became widespread first after Long Beach, California implemented them into their elementary and middle schools. It is safe to say that since then, schools have become far more lenient with what restrictions students have when it comes to uniforms. However, some others disagree with the policies on uniforms, believing that they obstruct on children's
South Hadley High School was once again compelled to tell two students to turn their shirts inside out. They have become concerned because of t-shirts showing indecent messages and obscene language. Every day this issue progresses more and more. This has now gotten so out of hand that this school must make a rule in the code of conduct preventing message t-shirts. South Hadley has become troubled with the safety of both students and faculty. If this irresponsible behavior goes on much longer the school may not be an exceptional learning environment for students.
