There were four main ancient River Valley civilizations: the Fertile Crescent of Mesopotamia, the Nile River of Egypt, the Indus River of India, and the Yellow River of China. These civilizations showed specific similarities and contrasting differences. Many of these differences and similarities showed up in the three categories of the technological advances, the types of government, and the geography of the civilization. Two civilizations that are very interesting to delve deeper into and study the contrasting societies are China and Egypt. Since China and Egypt were both isolated from the outside, they developed with a strong focus on technology and learning with strong governments to hold the nations together. One similarity …show more content…
It seems that the Egyptian culture focused more on intellectual contributions, while China focused more on farming and weapon contributions. China and Egypt required strong leadership to keep their lands and people in order. Without both of these strong, successful governments, both the nations could not have survived or thrived and would have quickly fell into ruins. However, China and Egypt both had contrasting governments. China’s government was feudalistic. Since China was a very vast nation, nobles watched over pieces of the land, and the emperor watched over the nobles. Egypt had a Pharaoh who watched over Upper and Lower Egypt. This is one difference: China had separate rulers reporting to one ruler, while Egypt had one ruler over everyone. The Chinese created an easy, efficient way of keeping track of everything happening in the kingdom. Egypt, however, was not nearly as huge as China, so a Pharaoh helped to unify Upper and Lower Egypt. The pharaoh is considered to be a god in human form. On the other hand, in China, the emperor is simply a normal person with a special right called the Mandate of Heaven, which is sent from heaven. This is the Chinese explanation for wars and rebellion against the emperor. If a ruler is wicked or foolish, he loses the Mandate to Heaven and, therefore, the right to rule. Although very different, both governments base their entire rule on divine forces; the emperor is chosen by heaven and the pharaoh is a
All three of the major river civilizations had a government in the form of hierarchy. Each civilization had a ruler; they were in a monarchy system. Some of the systems were considered to be well off systems because they were able to rule without any disruptions while others had systems in which were not in equality with men and women. In Mesopotamia, there was a king who ruled city-state regions. The kings were war leaders and their main function was to make sure everything was running great in their region. On the other hand, the Egyptians, Indians, and Chinese had similar monarchy systems. Their rulers were Pharaohs and kings, however in their society, people were slaves. The Pharaoh was such an elite person that they needed people in their society (slaves) to build pyramids and elaborate palaces for them. With each civilization having a distinct leader, this helped keep the environment more stable although some civilizations weren’t fair in the distribution of power.
The first, early civilizations in world history separated themselves among six empires, establishing the first known forms of settlements and politics. Two of these empires, Ancient Egypt and the Yellow (Huang He) River Valley (Shang and Zhou) civilizations, formed methods of power and diplomacy that differed, as well as related to one another. Both Egypt and Huang He’s civilizations were set up on geography and environment that promoted settlement as well as create certain difficulties that led to technological development. Within these settlements, each civilization depended on a system of divine/semi-divine leadership in which the kingdom was split by dynasties.
When people even mention ancient egypt, loads of things pop up like mummies, ruins, deaths, chaos, and none reasoning time period. Although in this case we have the wrong interpretation of how they actually loved their daily life better than americans do today . How can a lost civilization like ancient Egypt could even compare to American culture? Not only by how Egyptians had organized social standards, lifestyle, money, and how women’s rights were highly respected in the eyes of their people and government. Were as Americans are is still having trouble of picking the next president.
Many early river valley civilizations had very much in common, but they had their differences as well. Each civilization was located near an extremely important river that would lead to the growth of the civilization itself. The environment, government, and advancement of technology also aided the growth of the civilizations. Mesopotamia river valleys and China river dynasties had some things in common but the two also had many differences.
In addition to the differences they share culturally, there are differences between Europe and both China and Cairo economically. For example, in European towns, capitalism was practiced. Because there was no formal government dominating in Europe, capitalism allowed merchants to do as they wished without the government’s permission. This contrasts with China and Cairo, as in these civilizations, socialism was exercised. Because of socialism, the merchants of China and Cairo had to have the government’s approval before they were able to make any decisions. This is just one of the many differences between these global civilizations. Because Europe was different than the other global civilizations, such as Cairo and China, it was able to advance and later, dominate world trade. Europe today is one of the most wealthiest places in the world (they have 66% of the world’s wealth, according to Ferguson). They were able to achieve such power and wealth because of the way European towns were
The Ancient Egyptians, Mesopotamia, and Greeks were some of the oldest complex societies, although similar in many aspects. Mesopotamia is located in the Fertile Crescent, land in and between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers usually known as modern day Iraq and Eastern Syria.(24) In Egypt, the Nile River creates a fertile valley which is rich in nutrients and essential to their survival. The Nile flows from Burundi, slightly south of the equator eventually traveling through Egypt and into the Mediterranean. Ancient Greece is situated very closely to Egypt so trading was easy between them. How are these three civilizations comparable and different?
Egypt vs China Throughout history, from as early as 3000 BC there have been many urban civilizations that started from dry land, and a water source. Two civilizations that specifically have been remembered for their long lasting monarchy/dynasty are Egypt and China. Egypt a very dry and sandy environment had the gift of the Nile river their main water source. While China a fertile area with multiple rivers such as the Yellow river and the Yangtze river had an easier time farming crops. The two had completely different belief systems, with Egypt believing in multiple gods, while China believed in Confucianism.
Ancient civilizations mostly all consisted of a ‘leader’ either it was their pharaoh, king, or emperor they all had someone as higher class. Ancient Egypt had a very important factor in their government which was their Pharaoh. A Pharaoh is the most powerful person
Ancient Egypt and Early China, though continents and ideologies apart, both depended upon a king leader to rule over those in their territories. Despite fundamental differences, each society developed a clear social hierarchy with the foundation of advanced civilization being the lesser educated workers or slaves, and being lead by
The civilizations of the Nile River valley, the Mesopotamia valley, and Indus Valley marked human progress toward fixed settlements and the development of a rich culture. These civilizations shared many characteristics that contributed to their success. What made these civilizations unique were the contributions that each one gave to the world. They contributed their own ideas and accomplishments in the areas of religion, science, and mathematics. These contributions defined each civilization and how they would be remembered, as well as, their importance to the world.
The civilizations of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and China were all different but were also developed similar ways of doing things. The political, economic and intellectual outlooks of these ancient peoples say a lot about their ways of life. The religious views of Egypt and Mesopotamia were rather different.
Egyptian and Chinese civilizations are very different due to the culture, economy, and religious beliefs. Indeed, they have multiple differences, yet they have a few similarities. To begin with, Egyptian civilization emerged along the Nile River. Chinese civilization is on the northern part of China's vast central plain. These two civilizations have made a great impact in history. Both civilizations created their own writing, as well as language. Egypt is known for their beautifully sculpted pyramids, which were made for burials, and China is known for the Great Wall of China, which was made for protection from enemies. Additionally, the Egyptians believed that when one was sick, it was due to a curse, unlike the Chinese they believed illness
Not all civilizations were built along a river Rome was one of them. Each civilization has characteristics and they are religion, cities, government, social, art and architecture, intellectual, public works, and geography. There are six different civilizations Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, China, Egypt, and Indus Valley.Rome is comparable to the other civilizations. It has its own characteristics like every other civilization. The characteristics in this paper are geography, intellectual, and religion.
These early civilizations experienced similar environmental situations that contributed to the shaping of their societies because both societies were built around two river valleys. Mesopotamia was located between the Tigris and Euphrates river, but their river valley societies were surrounded by a desert that was easy terrain. While the first Chinese civilization developed along the Huang he (Yellow) and Yang Zi rivers, but this society was isolated from the rest of the world. Ancient China was surrounded by various environmental barriers; deserts from the north and west, the surrounding oceans from the east, and mountainous valleys from the south limited this societies interaction. Even though these civilizations had different environmental surroundings, they both had to adapt to their situations. These societies were located in fertilely rich lands that were great for agricultural lifestyles,
In conclusion, China and Egypt are similar by analyzing Egypt’s “Kingdom” periods describes a period of peace and prosperity flourished by the construction of temples, plenty of food was harvested and things were basically good. In comparison, with their “Intermediate” periods were times when Egypt was invaded, experienced civil war, bad food harvests, or other difficult times. During this time, the first Pharaoh Narmer started the tradition of passing power to members of his family, usually inherited by male children during this era. This is identical to the Chinese continuous transitioning of the emperors, which are similar to a king throughout the reign of dynasties in both China and Egypt. My research also validates the importance of why the Ancient Chinese population has successfully evolved into the nation of China that still exist
