Of Mice and Men is the the story of two men and their friendship in a time where no one had anybody. George has stuck by Lennie throughout everything they have been though and no matter how much he wants to leave he does not. George loves him like they were of the same flesh and blood. However, nearing the end of the novella, George comes to the realization that he and Lennie will never be able to live a normal life and their dreams of owning a farm will not come true. After Lennie killed Curley’s wife, George also understands that Lennie’s death is inevitable. The song that I chose for this assignment is ‘Red’ by Daniel Merriweather, because it shows Lennie from George’s point of view and grasps at the emotions that George feels. I felt as though it was George talking to Lennie, it was him singing the song, trying to tell lennie how he was feeling. Nearly every lyric in the song can be related to Of Mice and Men in one way or another, but the ones that are most connected to the book are: “You took something perfect and painted it red” (Merriweather, Daniel) When listening to this line, I picture the girls red dress that Lennie touched, or all of the animals that he stroked until he accidentally killed them, when listening to that line. “Behind the lie I can see the secrets you don’t show” (Merriweather, Daniel) I chose this line because it corresponds to how lennie lies about keeping mice in his pocket or the puppy that he tried to sneak into the room, but every time George always knew Lennie was lying because he could see right through him. That lyric can be compared to this quote from the novella:“George went quickly to him, grabbed him by the shoulder and rolled him over. He reached down and picked the tiny puppy up
Have you ever wondered why George killed Lennie in the end? Was it a smart decision? Did he have to do it? In the novel “Of Mice and Men”, George had to make some tough decisions. Before actually killing Lennie, George thought about why he should do so.
The movie Of Mice and Men, directed by Gary Sinise, has various differences from the book, written by John Steinbeck. One noticeable difference is that, in the movie, there are many added scenes, where the original scenes are cut short. Another, consists of, in the movie, the dream between George, Lennie, and later Candy, is never resolved. And the final difference, is how they end the movie in comparison to the book.
Lennie is one of the main characters in the book. Lennie and George have this amazingly strong friendship. He uses Lennie and George’s friendship as a symbol for companionship. “I was only foolin’, George. I don't want no ketchup. If it was here you could have some but I wouldn’t eat none George. I’d leave it all for you” (Steinbeck 8). Lennie is saying that if there was something he could give to George then he would. “Lennie who had been watching, imitated George exactly. He pushed himself back, drew up his knees, embraced them, looked over to George to see whether he had it just right” (Steinbeck 10). In this quote he is trying to copy George because Lennie looks up to him. Also, Lennie is a different kind of guy. He’s practically a kid trapped in an adult's body and doesn’t know his own strength. George deals with Lennie with patience and kindness despite his own frustration with Lennie.
“And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger.” George has just killed his best friend (Steinbeck 106). In John Steinbeck’s 1937 novella Of Mice and Men, George Milton and Lennie Small are a pair of pals that travel across California in search of work in the 1930s. With Lennie’s simple-minded thinking, he runs George and himself into trouble which costs them their job. The pair finally settles at a ranch somewhere in rural California after getting chased out of their last job. After a while, the inevitable happens and Lennie does something that does not look good for him, which causes men from the ranch to go chasing after him with the intent of killing him. Lennie flees to a nearby river where George meets him. To spare Lennie from the mental suffering of people always getting frustrated with him and criticizing his mistakes, George takes his life in an act of mercy.
The Story Of Mice and Men is about two buddies that go on to find work or any kind of income. The only problem is that lennie, one of the main characters, has a mental disability. Thankfully George, the other main character also lennie’s best friend, is around to help lennie. In the story more characters come into play including a nice old man named candy who has been working on the farm for many years. Like George candy has to take care of his old dog that he raised from a pup. Unfortunately one of Candy’s so called buddies took the dog out and shot him for the dogs own good. In the end George also loses his closest pal. Through the story George and candy have some similarities and
Sometimes decisions are like a drug addiction. You know the choice you need to make (quit for crying out loud!) ,but it may be harder than you choose to think. You know you need to quit smoking cigarettes, it’s taking you down a path to life terminating lung cancer. However, you refuse to jump the derailing train, because your need is stronger than your desire to quit. Because Lennie’s time was out and his train was about to go hurtling off the track, George made the right decision to spare Lennie from the suffering that would’ve followed, and I believe that this was the right decision.
Men in Of Mice and Men normally travelled alone and it is difficult for them to settle down or make a long term friendship. But in Steinbeck’ novel, the main two characters, George and Lennie are travelling together. They are not related but Lennie’ aunt has brought up George and he has promised her that he will look after Lennie. Gorge and Lennie share a dream. We are introduced to them both at the beginning of the book. As the two talk, it becomes clear that Lennie has a mental disability but is deeply devoted to George and dependent upon him for protection.
In life you make many sacrifices, for loved ones, friends and the community… Sometimes there are sacrifices that might hurt a lot, but they are made to protect others. George’s choice to shoot Lennie after he had unintentionally killed Curley's wife, had its own personal reason.
While mercy and murder do have some similarities there is one huge difference, mercy killing has consent, murder does not. Sometimes it is as clear as day if it is murder or mercy. One of these times was when a twenty nine year old “Brittany Maynard fulfilled her final wish… purposely ending her own life on her own schedule…” (Briggs). This is very different from what happens in Of Mice and Men By: John Steinbeck where George kills Lennie without his consent. In Of Mice and Men George and Lennie are best friends that go on the road with each other looking for jobs. They end up working at a ranch and made some friends and some enemies. Throughout this story it is shown that Lennie is mentally disabled and is obsessed with petting soft objects,
In chapter one of “Of Mice and Men”, we are introduced to the characters Lennie and George. The book starts with describing a serene scene of a valley with a river running through it. The book then focuses on the two characters that emerge out of the forest. One with sharp features and strong stance and the other looking as though he is still in his pubescent years. As the chapter progresses, the author, John Steinbeck, allows readers to catch a glimpse of the characters’ relationship with each other and see the inner workings of their symbiotic partnership.
Over the course of the story, John Steinbeck is attempting to show that the relationship that George and Lennie have is one that can be hard to understand at certain times. Sometimes, George is very nice to Lennie, whereas at other times, it appears as if he doesn't want anything to do with him. Both of the men
His companion Lennie is a very simple-minded, childish, and forgetful person which causes George to bring out his anger. This can be reflected in “This Is Me Trying” by Taylor Swift. At the beginning of the book, George yells at Lennie because of Lennie's childish personality. George gets frustrated that he has to remind Lennie of things continuously and goes on an almost full-page rant on page 12. After this, he realizes Lennie is upset and tries to take it back.
Like the mouse in the poem, George, Lennie and Candy's ideal plan was destroyed, leaving George and Candy with nothing but 'grief and pain for promised joy'. 'Tell me like you done before'
Of Mice and Men is a story that follow two men named George and Lennie living during The Great Depression. Lennie is a man who is mentally challenged. Owing to that fact that he has this disability they have to make him feel as welcome as possible. The first example of the author
In the beginning of the novella, Lennie is portrayed as innocent and dependent on George. When Lennie had a mouse and George asked for it, Steinbeck describes Lennie’s reaction
