There are many differences, but also similarities between the book Flowers for Algernon and the movie Charly. In the movie, the viewers could see what was happening, where as in the book the scenes were described so the readers could understand. In the movie Charly and the book Flowers for Algernon there are many differences that include: Miss Kinnian and Charlie starting to date, Charlie announcing his love, Charlie being rejected by Miss Kinnian, and Charlie announcing his regression. There are also many similarities that include: Charlie loving Miss Kinnian, Charlie being taught by Miss Kinnian, Charlie losing against Algernon in races before the surgery, and Charlie won against Algernon after the surgery.
In the movie and the book, Charlie announces that he loves Miss Kinnian. For example, on page 71 of the story it states, “The thought of leaving her behind made me sad. I’m in love with Miss Kinnian.” This statement from the story makes Charlie realize that because of him becoming smarter, his emotions have also changed for Miss Kinnian. In the movie, Charlie realizes that he loves Miss Kinnian, but leaves for a few weeks to a month for a rebellious stage. The movie portrayed it in the same way because the movie wanted to focus on Charlie’s emotions along with the book. Although the book didn’t focus on the emotions as much as the movie, the writers still thought that Charlie should love her.
In the book, Charlie was taught by Miss Kinnian along with the movie. Miss Kinnian tutored, taught, and mentored Charlie in the movie as well as the book. On page 71 of the story, it states, “You’ve got to be a little patient, You’re accomplishing in days and weeks what it takes normal people to do in half a lifetime. That’s what makes it so amazing. You’re like a giant sponge now, soaking things in. Facts, figures, general knowledge. And soon you’ll begin to connect them, too.” This shows that because Miss Kinnian is teaching Charlie everything, he is becoming smart very fast. The movie kept Miss Kinnian the same because she played a vital role in Charlie’s learning and other events. Because of Miss Kinnian, Charlie learned many things, but if she hadn’t taught Charlie, nobody would know how he felt about the
Charlie’s friendship with Jasper Jones, his parents, and witnessing the intolerance of Corrigan are the three biggest factors in Charlie's development from innocence to experience. Jasper Jones exposed him to fear and forced him to be brave and face his fears, the rampant intolerance in Corrigan, both racial and otherwise, exposed him to the injustices of the real world, and his relationship with his parents taught him to be diplomatic and control his
Next, the characters between the two stories have many differences. In "Flowers for Algernon" one of the main doctors, Dr. Strauss, is a man while in Charly they are a woman. The characters actions and emotions also differ greatly between the two stories. The characters in the stories have different aspects to their personality.
When a book gets adapted into a film, the filmmakers will most likely change many things from the book so it doesn’t seem like they ripped the film completely off. This is obvious with Flowers For Algernon and the movie, Charly, this book and movie have many differences as well as similarities. One similarity with this book and film is that they both follow the same story which is about Charlie, a 37 year old man that desperatly wants to become smart. In the book, Charlie finds two doctors, Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss and choose him for the operation, In the film, Charlie is also chosen for the operation. Another similarity is that Charlie becomes friends with Algernon after he beats him. In the book, after Charlie beats Algernon many times,
“Flower for Algernon” and Charly, one is a story and the other is a movie. Both of the authors, Daniel Keyes and Stirling Silliphant had to change different parts of the story line in order for it to work. In both, Charly Gordan is the protagonist. He is 38 years old and lives in Boston at the time. At this time, Charly was not highly intelligent. After doctors performed an experimental surgery on him, he became more sophisticated and smarter. At work, his so-called “friend” bullied Charly. The only reason Charly “friends” take him out is to make fun of him for an amusement. Charly would have never found out what they laughing about if he had not gotten the surgery. Therefore, when Charly was out of a job, Silliphant perspective was that the boss fires Charly. However, Keyes perspective was that he is persuaded that he should quit his job. In both cases, he was unemployed. While Charly was unemployed, he has different feelings about people and things. When the bust boy dropped the tray with glasses in the movie and in the story, everyone in the diner laughs at the poor boy. Charly has seen himself in the boy who has dropped the dishes.
One similarity between “ Raymond's Run” and “ Flowers for Algernon” is first person point of view it is showing the reader their personality. In “ Raymond's Run” Hazel's personality is she wants to achieve things and help other people like her brother as much as she could in running. She wants to achieve the race and she want to help her brother become a star runner one day. While she is running the race she says, “ And it occurs to me, watching how smoothly he climbs hand over hand and remembering how he looked running with his arms down to his side and with the wind pulling his mouth back and his teeth showing and all, it occurred to me that Raymond would make a very fine runner” (Bambara 8). In this quote it is saying how she is watching him run and all the good things about him. It is also saying that she wants him to be a star runner someday just like she is. Additionally in “Flowers for Algernon” Charlie the main character has a disability and want to become smart but intern he ends up getting an operation to make him smart. For

Through their friendship, Miss Kinnian wanted Charlie to get smart giving him help and support which Charlie needed, “She wants me to get smart. I know .” (Keyes 12) Due to the good relationship with each other, Charlie states, “One thing? I, like about, Dear Miss Kinnian: (thats, the way? it goes; in a buisness, letter (if I ever go! into business?) is that, she: always; gives me’ a reason” when- I ask. She”s a gen’ius!” (Keyes 39) She never gives up hope on Charlie and his motivation to learn. Through their relation at the Beekmin College For Retarded Adults, they create a friendship between each other. In conclusion, Charlie’s friendship towards Alice Kinnian
“Charly” and “Flowers for Algernon” are two very similar pieces of literature with a lot of similarities and differences. Let’s first start off with the similarities. One similarity that the movie and the short story share is they both include the part where somebody put Algernon in Charlie’s room. Before that, Charlie was fed up with Algernon beating him all the time, so he gave up racing with Algernon. Charlie raced him one last time and he beat him. This part was important because if he didn’t race him again, he probably would’ve given up on the whole operation. Another similarity that both pieces of literature share is the Frank Reilly and Joe Carp bullying Charlie. Before the operation, Frank and Joe would take advantage of Charlie being

The short story “Flowers for Algernon” and the movie “Charly” have many similarities and differences. This movie and short story is based on Charlie not having the ability to be smart and then he has an operashun and becomes intelligent, but too bad the operashun was only temporary, so that made his intelligents vanish. Some similarities between the movie and the short story is that Charlie falls in love with Miss Kinnian, Algernon dies, and Charlie loses his knowledge. Charlie does fall in love Miss Kinnian. In the short story she was just his teacher but whenever Charlie had his operashun and Miss Kinnian wasn’t his teacher anymore, Charlie had feelings for her. Another detail that is alike from both of the short story and the movie is that,

Charlie is not in the book because the movies need to have more drama and charlie was a person who was part of the drama. And the book and the movie are different the book has more details. The movie is for entertainment and not the same as the book because they want the movie to be more interesting. The book is to tell you how the story was. And the movie was for showing what charlie
In the movie, the only time you see Charlie crying is at the end, when he blacks out and attempts to commit suicide.
Both stories had different types of flavors. There is the strawberry ice cream flavor where Flowers of Algernon had the majority of the film showing the complicated romantic relationship between Ms. Kinnian and Charly. There is also the vanilla ice cream flavor where the story was plainly about Charly struggling in his life to fit in with society. Although the film and the short story had different flavors, it still had some of the same products. There weren’t only differences between the story and the film. There were similarities as well.
