Comparing The Book 'Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Sea Of Monsters'

My original thought when comparing Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief the movie and Classical mythology was that there would be many more references to the myth of Perceus than any other myth throughout the movie in its entirety. That’s where I was wrong. After watching the movie again and researching the different hero myths my opinion has changed. My new thoughts are that the movie is not influenced by the myth of Perceus any more than other hero myths. The movie ties together many different heroes’ stories and mixes them together to make a wonderful story about a young boy. The movie was based on a book series written by Rick Riordan.

Percy has a unique way in conveying his message to the readers in The Loss of the Creature. He explains experiences through the eyes of others in a perplexing way. By doing so, it illustrates to the readers that everyone has a symbolic complex. Prior to real experiences, everyone has schema of how things are before any actual experience. A true experience is made when one chooses to set aside what they have heard or seen in pictures and actually be in the moment. He formed his perspective on students by comparing a biology student in a classroom to a Falkland Islander boy. Additionally, the first part of his essay, he discussed the Grand Canyon experience and relating it to conformation of new experiences.

In Rick Riordan’s second book of the Percy Jackson series, Sea of Monsters, is about three teenagers in a world of ancient gods trying to find the Golden Fleece. The Golden Fleece is known to heal anything which is why Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson need it. To save Camp Half-blood, these teens go on a quest to find the Golden Fleece and return it to camp. And in James Patterson’s book, Max, is about a teenager girl that can fly, and also has a group of friends that can fly too. They are known as the flock. In Max, Max’s mom gets kidnapped. Because of this, Max and the flock go on a quest to find and get her mom back. In these two books, there were differences in the kinds of themes that the authors used along with different craft moves used to achieve the same thing. But there were similarities with the archetypal characters that both authors used.

Perseverance is the only thing that will truly keep the world alive. If humans had given up instead of persevering America would not exist, tyranny would reign and slavery would still exist. Several characters throughout literary history, such as Odysseus from Homers’ Odyssey, and Louis Zamperini in Unbroken are the prime examples of perseverance, and they did it through personal strength and determination to not be broken. After all, it is better to persevere and live a hellish life than to relinquish that life in order to live more comfortably in the hands of those who seek to degrade the soul.

How can we modernize a story to make it more relatable and understanding to a new generation of learners? The book, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief based on the original,“The Legend of Perseus,” is taken and molded into a new take on ancient greek mythology. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief draws on and adds to the original characters, uses similarities and creates differences to rejuvenate the old story.

Percy is a hero because he saved the world of WWIII of the gods. In chapter 9 Percy starts his path on the hero 's journey when he is called to complete a quest. The conversation is between the centaur Chiron and Percy. "Your quest, of course. Will you accept it?" I glanced at Grover, who was crossing his fingers. "Um, sir," I said, "you haven 't told me what it is yet." Chiron grimaced. "Well, that 's the hard part, the details."Thunder rumbled across the valley. The storm clouds had now reached the edge of the beach. As far as I could see, the sky and the sea were boiling together."Poseidon and Zeus," I said. "They 're fighting over something valuable ... something that was stolen, aren 't they?" This shows that Percy was just called to adventure. Percy was just given a task to stop a war between the gods. This shows that Percy just stepped foot on the hero 's journey since this was his call to adventure. “Percy starts his journey on the road of trials when HE ENCOUNTERS THE FURIES, WHO ARE HADES HELPERS. The text says “Annabeth and Grover moved up behind the Furies cautiously, looking for an opening. I took the ballpoint pen out of my pocket and uncapped it. Riptide elongated into a shimmering double-edged sword. The Furies hesitated. Mrs. Dodds had felt Riptide’s blade before. She obviously didn’t like seeing it again. “Submit now,” she hissed.

This parallel helps the readers to relate to the book, essentially engaging the young readers to learn about Greek mythology and the lessons of life that it teaches, in a not so bland way. The protagonist of the novel, Percy Jackson, is revealed to be special in some way. This section also develops other supporting characters, such as Chiron, Percy’s teacher, who also was mentor to Hercules and Grover, who is Percy’s sidekick, a multi-dimensional character with his own past, hopes and concerns. The association of Chiron and Percy foretells that Percy will carry on heroic deeds in future. Percy fights Minotaur, a monster that even Theseus fought and defeated. In the process of defeating Minotaur, Percy loses his mother, which he feels was his last hope to returning to his normal human life. By drawing parallels between Percy and various heroes of Greek Mythology, the author shows Percy in the light of a hero. A hero who is yet to prove his worth in the Camp Half-Blood. His encounter with Clarisse at a bathroom in camp, allows him to show his strength, which was very similar to that of his father Poseidon, but also instils in some ways fear amongst the camp

Percy wakes up at a place called camp half-blood. Camp half-blood is created by magical borders in order to protect demigods so they can continue to train while being safe. After entering camp half-blood Percy learns about his identity of being a demigod. A demigod is child from a human and Greek god parent. He learns that he’s the son of one the three major Gods, Poseidon. Also, that his mother is very much alive but is kidnapped by Hades one of the three major Gods as well. Percy then goes into training and utilizes his dragon to be a positive trait that helps him settle into his new life. As his dyslexia functions for mythology and his ADHD helps him keep moving in

For this film review, I watched the film Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. It tells the story of Percy, son of Poseidon, and his quest to discover both who he is and who stole the mighty lightning bolt of Zeus. The film is aimed at families, and generally shows an accurate representation of the Greek myths. There are a few key differences though, which are mostly used to present the Greek Gods in a better, more likable tone for the movie.

In the book Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, Percy is your typical 12-year-old boy who is a troublemaker in school and lives with his mother’s abusive husband. Percy’s life changes when he accused of stealing Zeus’ master bolt and attacked by monsters. Percy’s mother is killed along the way towards a camp called Camp Half-Blood and trains his heritage as a demigod. Percy is then sent on a heroic quest, with friends, to prove his innocence and along the way, rescue his mother from Hades. After a long and arduous journey of being chased by monsters, Percy managed to return the lightning bolt and save his mother. Percy is then betrayed by a close friend, as the friend was the thief, and escaped while warning them of the true mastermind.

Percy Jackson is a twelve year old boy that lives in New York, in modern time. He has attended a few private schools for troubled students (Riordan 1). In fact, he describes himself as a “troubled kid” with dyslexia and ADHD (Riordan 7). Percy is used to being the loner of the group, after attending six schools in the past six years which probably means he doesn’t make many friends. (Schmoop). His classmates do not have a need to scramble for money.
