In the poem “Speech of the Young” and the passage from “My People, ” they show how people could deal with what you want to do with life. They also show you should do what you want to do with your life. The stories were made by Margaret Haddix and the other by Gwendolyn Brooks. They show characters being told they can’t or being unconfident but they should do what they want to do and believe in themselves Both “Speech of the young and “My People” show people being told you can do it. In the story “My people” the main character is unconfident about herself but then talks to her grandma and is pushed forward. “.or you going to do something about it?”. Paragraph 14 line 2 by Haddix. In this granny is trying to go to the point to encourage her to go to the college that asked her to come. In the poem “Speech of the young, they try to encourage people as well. The poet says “Even if you are not ready for the day it cannot always be night. You will be right. For this is the hard home run.”. Line 6-9 by Brooks. The poet is telling the reader that even if it is hard it would get better and that you would be alright but it would be hard to get through it. …show more content…
In “My People” the main character thinks no one would care she has a chance for college. “My parents would have said, Well, that’s real nice honey, and gone back to watching reruns of The Price Is Right”. Paragraph 6 first sentences. This shows the main character thinks if she did show it to her loving parents they wouldn’t care about it. In the “Speech of the Young, the amount of” the author number of people bringing you down greater. “Say to the down-keepers, the sun-slappers, the self-soilers”. Lines 3-4. The author is telling the reader to say to all the people keeping you down you can and that you don’t care about anything negative they say to you, you will do it and
People working on their dreams will encounter unmotivated, ignorant individuals who will try to convince them that nothing is possible. Nonetheless, they overcame the prejudice and heavily relied on determination and motivation to succeed. Because they realize that it is achievable and crucial to accomplish their ambition. When comparing “The Rose that grew from Concrete” By Tupac Shakur and “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” by Dylan Thomas, it is seen that both authors focus on how people must not give up, yet they have completely different perspectives which they express using personification and symbolism.
This can be interpreted in a way that says that even though you might work hard for something it not always turn out the way you want it to be. I can also represent that one sometimes has to do things that they do not like in order to not create more chaos. It also makes references to “Sweet home” which can be taken as a metaphor because while the wording says “sweet” we know that it was a place where most slaves decided to escape from because they were treated bad. THe word “home” can also be taken the opposite because while it is a place they can stay at, it is not a place where they be free and feel comfortable because they have to be watching their back in order to maintain themselves safe.
From the beginning she pulls the readers attention, she uses a metaphor “Eventually being perfect day after day, year after year, became like always carrying a backpack filled with bricks on my back”(Quindlen, 296). This metaphor is the most significant part of her speech as she continues to refer to this metaphor throughout the speech. She uses this for the purpose of appealing to the audience in a meaningful, and personal way, creating a connection between her and the audience as most students, not only college students, can probably relate to the feeling of being heavily put down by something , not necessarily what she is talking about. Her use of pathos is what makes the speech so appealing and interesting, because she makes it so relatable and easy to understand.
in the poem "if" the qoute says "watch the things you gave your life to broken and stop and build up with corn and tools" its telling you if you were fail get back up and try again
Arrogant and overconfident, Casey decides to pass up the first two pitches, but misses the third. I believe that this poem is saying that baseball can relate to life’s reality in different ways. I also believe that the poem is referring to the real life situation of the opportunities that someone is offered. To elaborate, when you receive an opportunity, you should take it even if you think a better one will come.
In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the main character is constantly being told what she is and is not able to do such as “But he said I wasn’t able to go, nor able to stand it after I got there;… (Gilman)” This is an excellent example of her feeling oppressed, because her husband feels that he knows her capabilities better than she does. Another example of this is “’What is it little girl?’ he said. ‘Don’t go walking about like that—you’ll get cold.’ (Gilman)” This is an example of John thinking that her condition is so bad, she has to be treated like a child, constantly telling her what and what not to do. In “The Story of an Hour” the shows she has felt depressed with “There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself. (Chopin)” After receiving news that her husband passed away in a train accident, she felt as if the burden of doing things for her husband was lifted, and that she could do the things she wants to do.
She makes her claims in such a way that draws the audience in and provides a perspective that most have not considered before. Her use of personal stories provide her with credibility that the things she is telling about is not fabricated to make the audience members feel in a specific way. Young gives her speech in such a way that the audience can connect and understand but not feel like they are being chastise for things that they may have once
The overall theme of the poem is that there is a baserunner that is taking his lead and is preparing to steal a base. In this process, he is constantly bouncing back and force, like most runners do, and he is very anxious as to when the pitcher will start towards home plate. Near the end of the poem, the runner also taunts and plays with the pitcher to bother him, and when his time strikes, he steals second and most likely makes it. The mood of the poem is definitely focused and tense. This is shown through words like “come on, come on,” (line 5).
Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. are seen as national heroes for the significant message they represent, liberty and unity. Throughout history, minorities have been oppressed and courageous men like Lincoln and King worked hard to liberate them. President Lincoln ended the Civil War and Dr. King was an activist in the Civil Rights movement. Both the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement lead to unity and freedom. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address’ addresses the theme of freedom by having a nation where independence reigns by abolishing slavery. Conversely, in King’s I Have a Dream Speech, the theme of freedom is addressed by ending segregation and discrimination in America. Lincoln’s theme of unity is ending the war to unify the nation to improve it. Similarly, King’s theme of unity is ending the division of races in the nation and working together towards a better future.
Academy award winning film, The King’s Speech, is a motivational movie where voice and courage become a matter of life and death. Prince Albert, later known as King George VI (Colin Firth), stammers excessively and uncontrollably through his inaugural speech closing the 1925 British Empire Exhibition due to a speech impediment. After finishing such a disappointing speech, Prince Albert decides to give up on himself and accept his fate as a stammering heir to the throne. However, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), enlists him to see an Aussie speech therapist that goes by the name of Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) whose “Antipodean methods are known to be ‘unorthodox’ and ‘controversial,’” (“The King’s
The pattern of imagery and diction that is created in lines 7 -10, uses diction with negative and consequential words to create a negative image of a result of not making a thrust in life. If you are not doing anything interesting with life, you might be putting yourself in a position where you could be criticized and
Here, in lines 5-6, it is obvious when read how the brokenness in the middle of the line contributes to the meaning of the poem. Brooks also uses run-on lines to emphasize in sound the fact that when African-American teenagers decide it is cool to drop out they are beginning a headlong run into death. The never-ending brokenness that is shown by the run-on lines gives these misbehaved teenagers an excuse to sin and
In the speech, “I Have a Dream”, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an American activist asserts that white and black people are not treated equally. King supports this assertion by using mostly the rhetorical appeals Pathos and Ethos. King’s purpose is to enforce civil rights in order to stop the racial abuse from the white people onto the blacks. King uses a sense of urgency to address the uneducated followers. King effectively persuades his audience to think that the blacks are truly not being treaty the way they should be and the inequalities between the races is unacceptable through the use of the rhetorical devices allusion, metaphor, and anaphora
While The Kings Speech draws upon a number of historical facts and events, this is not its primary concern. The film is about the effect of a person’s family on how the person develops. For example, in The Kings Speech, King George VI’s brother abdicating and his father’s cruelty played a part in his stammer and lack of confidence. The film is also about the importance of a secure support system, for example Queen Elizabeth and Lionel Logue were Bertie's support system and they helped him overcome his stammer and lack of confidence. A third important issue in the film is about the different approach to class distinction by British and Australian people, as shown by the expectations of Bertie and Queen Elizabeth that Lionel Logue will do
There are many poets that have been writing some of the most amazing poems in the world for years upon years. Poetry is a great way to write about some of the most meaningful things in one’s life, without directly having to state what you’re trying to say some of the times. A lot of poets write about events within their lives as well as things in everyday life in the lives of everyone in the world. The poems “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” by Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) and “Psalm of Life” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) both use great diction and varying tone in their poems to portray their individual perspectives about life.
