Often times songs and poems leave readers and listeners wondering what in the world they could mean. More frequent than not, these art forms have deeper meaning through their use of figurative language, poetic terms and other artistic characteristics. Of such forms is Borns song, “Electric Love” and Jason Grant’s poem, “Love or is it Drugs”. These texts share a lot of common ground and of it; a common theme. This shared theme is that love has all the same effects on a person as drugs do. Although both texts compare love and drugs through simile and extended metaphor and use repetition, the song “Electric Love” is more artistic and intellectual than “Love or is it Drugs” due to the song’s use of symbolism and other figurative language. The biggest mutual element between the two texts is their similarity in comparing love and drugs through extended metaphor. Within …show more content…
These devices prove the higher level of artistry and intellect the song has. One of the first figurative language devices used in the song is personification. “And every night my mind is running around her” (Borns 3). This line personifies the mind as if it has the capability to run. Figuratively, what is being expressed is how his mind is always thinking of her as if he is addicted. Again, this personification is aiding the theme pass on it’s message. Symbolism also plays a role in the artistry and intelligence of this song. “Surround me/ Hold me deep beneath your waves” (Borns 12-13). Her waves are not literal but nothing more than a symbol. They symbolize her love or attraction she has upon him, similar to the attraction and addiction drugs are able to hold over their users. While the song’s meaning continues to get deeper and deeper through these devices, the poem lacks depth. Nearly everything in the poem is literal and simple. There is no personification, symbolism or any other poetic
“Cherrylog Road” and “Come under the Covers” both artistically and subtly imply the coming together of two people in love. In James Dickey’s poem “Cherrylog Road”, he discusses the forbidden love of two young teens forced to find refuge in an abandoned junk yard while Nick Petricca’s song “Come under the Covers” discusses the coming together of a seemingly summer fling attempting to keep the love alive. The theme of love between these two works may be compared by their use of figurative language and sensory imagery, approach, relation to theme, and rhyme scheme.
This is a very lyrical poem. The speaker's emotions and intentions are made very clear in very inconspicuous ways. The subtle repetition of certain words and images give the poem a very distinct tone. For example, the repetition of the words
Compare how the poets present love in “Nettles” and in one other poem from the Relationships cluster.
Much of the song has no end line punctuations, and each sentence flows into the next. Along with that we get a sense of imagery from the lines of the poem. The narrator explains what the characters are seeing in way that depicts a certain image in the audience’s minds. I find that though the techniques used are adequate they are not completely effective. Rather, I think that it is the form it takes on that gives it the substance and power it needs.
Though written in a very light and simple manner, the poem comes across as something very profound, laden with meaning through its incongruities. The persona, wanting to see something, often goes to the well and looks down at the water to see it. This certain search below the water's surface can be compared to man's search beneath the human experience for meaning, for certainty.
The piano puts together words like “snicker” and “flicker”, “din” and “within”, “rumbles” and “fumbles”, and “moon” and “tune” providing a unique sound throughout the poem. These rhymes made the poem come to life in my eyes, and that is one of the reasons it is so spectacular. The words in the poem made the piano come to life, and this is known as personification. The use of the world, “flicker” makes me think of a fire or light, which for some people symbolizes life.
In today's modern world, the use of poetry to communicate and express oneself has become quite rare. One of the main reasons is due to the fact that with such an old style of writing, it is very often hard to understand properly. poetry is indeed difficult to read and hard to understand, but given time, it is a rewarding challenge. Poetry is not only written verse but is used in songs as well. Taken the time to listen to the words of modern songs, you will realise that the lyrics of the song are actually a poem linking modern day music to poetry.
The poem is about silent desperation, it shows how people can be helpless when they can’t say what is on their minds. It is about 3 people waiting at the bus stop while they are quietly fading away in 3 different ways. Each of them wishes to say something to the other so that they can warn them that they are in danger but no one can, they are trapped in their own suffering. The whole poem could be seen as a metaphor, because so many things happen that would probably never happen in a real life situation.
In this song, for the majority of the time the artist is confessing and explaining his love for Delilah to the world, and Delilah herself. He does this by telling the audience exactly what he is thinking, however, he does use imagery on occasion to accentuate his point. For example, the artist uses the simile “Times Square can’t shine as bright as you,” to compare Delilah’s radiance to the lights of New
The imagery used in this verse appeals to the sense sight. This helps the reader visualise what the writer is taking about. It also allows the reader to relate and connect more to the poem.
Your first thought is the love between the couple is toxic and lethal yet, he cannot resist his partner. But, really it is a reference to Cocaine. Cocaine is given a female voice. He uses personification by bringing the drug to life, where it can communicate with him and become part of his life. He knows that this “girl” meaning, Cocaine is going to be the death of him. While in use of Cocaine he gets numb. “But at least we’ll both be beautiful and stay forever young/ This I know, (yeah) this I know” (3-4). You say again, that he is singing about how the love is so very satisfying. But he is actually meaning that his desire for this young and beautiful woman makes him feel good. He feels as if he is invincible when he has her. Even though he seems to be aware of the consequences that come with feeling young and beautiful; with the use of Cocaine. “She told me, ‘Don’t worry about it.’/ She told me, ‘Don’t worry no more.’/ We both knew we can’t go without it/ She told me you’ll
Three poetic elements tell and show everyone what they are feeling and listening is true. First of this song has a deeper meaning using connotation. Simple phrases like “You can get off; someone else can get on”. This is showcasing a cycle that
acually its deeper if you look into this poem. You see more of what she is saying. This poem
Unlike other forms of literature, poetry can be so complex that everyone who reads it may see something different. Two poets who are world renowned for their ability to transform reader’s perceptions with the mere use of words, are TS Eliot and Walt Whitman. “The love song of J Alfred Prufrock” by TS Eliot, tells the story of a man who is in love and contemplating confessing his emotions, but his debilitating fear of rejection stops him from going through with it. This poem skews the reader’s expectations of a love song and takes a critical perspective of love while showing all the damaging emotions that come with it. “Song of myself”, by Walt Whitman provokes a different emotion, one of joy and self-discovery. This poem focuses more on the soul and how it relates to the body. “Song of myself” and “The love song of J Alfred Prufrock” both explore the common theme of how the different perceptions of the soul and body can affect the way the speaker views themselves, others, and the world around them.
The rhyme scheme that is portrayed in the poem is ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH and so on. The meaning of this rhyme scheme is every other line rhyme with one another. For example, line one and three rhyme with each other because line 1 ends with brother and line three ends with mothers and that rhyme with each other. Also, line 2 ends with years and line four end with tears and those two rhyme with one another. This poem is literal because it is straightforward with what is going on the poem from the title and throughout the poetry. The poem is literal with explaining that there are children who are going through a depressed time because they are forced to do hard work and believe that death is the best way out. Child labor is causing the children to not live their life as a kid instead as adult with all the hard work they have to do.
