Comparing Humans And The Environment In Pump Six By Paolo Bacigalupi

In the world we live in the environment and those who live in it are all influenced by one another. These influences can often be positive like when a bird helps to pollinate a flower or negative like when humans dump toxins and other chemicals into oceans or rivers, which then kill the animals living in it and also the animals that consume those sea animals. Nowadays humans have more of a negative affect on the environment rather than a positive one, however some people are trying to turn things around before things get too bad. In Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach, “Pump Six” by Paolo Bacigalupi, and the short film Mr. Green we see how the relationship between humans and the environment has impacted one another.
Ecotopia is set in a futuristic period where Washington, Oregon, and Northern California have seceded from the rest of the United States and have formed their own country called Ecotopia. Ecotopia is and ecofriendly country and people there are more connected to their environment. “But what matters most in the aspiration to live in balance with nature, ‘walk lightly on the land,’ treat the earth as a mother” (p.29 Callenbach). Due to the pollution animal products have become rare and the mental health of those living in the area are affected. People are loosing intelligence as each generation goes by and some are being born as trogs. “’Rohit and I never really though about any of it until his students started seeming stupider every year’…‘And then he tested them, and he was right’” (p.237 Bacigalupi). The negative effect the people had on the environment is affecting them resulting in a disgusting city and people loosing intelligence. “Pump Six” demonstrates an environment where its inhabitance didn’t take proper care of
