Neglect to take care of the land after many decades is starting to show significant negative effects on the environment. Many people do not know what all entails land pollution other than the commonly known pollutions such as chemical and waste, the list may surprise you. The Industrial Revolution was a period that changed the course of human history in many ways. People often think of the positive outcomes rather than the negative consequences, for example, the creation of a more efficient manufacturing process that resulted in more products and profits. However, the industrial revolution also paved ways for humans to increase the amount of pollution being put into the atmosphere immensely. Evidence of this is seen in various graphs of Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide. In these graphs, there is a notable spike in these levels starting around the mid 1800s, which is also around the time the Industrial Revolution started to take off and spread around the world. In the data of CO2 emissions, Carbon Dioxide was about 280 ppm (parts per million) in the pre-industrial time period, since then CO2 levels have increased rapidly resulting in around 407 ppm, which is the highest level humans have ever experienced. This being said, the whole human race needs to be self-conscious of what get exposed to Earth’s atmosphere.

Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, we have been making social, economical, scientific, and environmental changes and advancements at an unprecedented rate. The state of our environment and the increasing consumption of its natural resources have become of growing concern to the earth’s population. This issue is attributed to our contribution towards global warming through the emission of greenhouse gases; our pollution of the environment; and our booming population growth complemented by the increase in per capita consumption (Anderton, 2007; Ehrlich & Ehrlich, 2008). All of the above have had environmental impacts which include, amongst others, the degradation and depletion of natural resources; climate change; natural disasters and even detriment to human health (Khan & Ghouri, 2011).

This rapid growth of industrial civilization is causing the Earth to die. Moreover the nation has begun to change mindsets on what should come first, they are deciding to put their comfortable lifestyles ahead of the protection of the planet. Stated by Alan Durning, “The tragic irony is that while the consumer society has been stunningly effective in harming the environment, it has failed to provide us with a sense of fulfillment” (Durning 68). Durning gives an undeniable fact; the population has continued to destroy the land so that they may seek entertainment and after they have had their enjoyment, they leave an area to begin the process of destruction. A multitude of the population would argue that the ‘small’ amounts of land that is being used has a microscopic effect on the world, however, when everyone is using ‘small’ amounts of land it adds up. Furthermore, “Barely 7 percent of the areas currently enjoy some form of protection” (Mittermeier). This gives way for a mass eradication of the remaining 93% of the terrain. According to the AMS( American Meteorological Society), human activity is affecting the climate of the Earth and the primary cause of air pollution.
