Aaron Copland was born in Brooklyn, New York, on November 14, 1900. Copland was one of the most influential American Classical composers of the twentieth century. Although Copland was trained in the Classical music of Europe, he started to focus his attention towards American music. He felt that by infusing music like folk and jazz into his works that he could make classical music popular in America. By doing so he was able to remove the European influence on American Classical music.
I have chosen to compare performances of two of his most famous works, Fanfare for the Common Man (youtube.com/watch?v=FLMVB0B1_Ts) and Billy the Kid (youtube.com/watch?v=H_mdvy2M13Q). Fanfare for the Comman Man was written in 1942. The song was written for a WWII tribute for the Cinncinatti Symphony Orchestra. Billy the Kid was a ballet commissioned by Lincoln Kirsten. It premiered in 1938 in Chicago by the Ballet Caravan Company. Although the two works may differ they both present the listener with a view of American life.

the two works both tend to return to a main musical theme. The both tend to use ornamentation in there melodies. Copland tends to limit the range of the instruments in both pieces. I think he did that to help portray a more wild west American image.
Billy the Kid begins in the key of Ab Major, which helps give it a happy and carefree mood. Fanfare starts in the key of Bb Major giving the song a majestic and powerful feel. Both pieces form their harmonies with chordal notes spread over many instruments. This once again helps achieve the American West

People are not always born into the life they so desire, but some are willing to do whatever it takes to change their fate. This is portrayed in the stories "The Adventures of Huckleberyy Finn" by Mark Twain, and "Enrique's Journey" by Sonia Nazario.Huckleberry Finn along with Enrique work towards a better life in which they can live as they wish. The boys end goals were different, but the journey remained similar and their goals were met.The story behind each boy led them to have certain wants out of life.
A primary difference between the two stories is how the two main characters were brought up. Both characters are similar in the fact that they were orphans; however, they were raised in two completely different scenarios. In A Single
As for the differences, they had different tempos. They both had driving rhythms, but they were going at different paces. “Rite of Spring” also seemed to be more catchy then “Pictures of
Billy the Kid is a very likable and engaging. The scene with him and Garrett and the fireball is well crafted. Remember to set up and foreshadow action like this, but then use it again in the present day story for a
Johannes Brahms was born in Germany in 1833. He was a musical child prodigy! Luckily, his father recognized his talent and helped teach him music. Brahms got jobs playing in bars and taverns around Hamburg. In his teenage years he focused on dance music which he played every night as part of his job. However, since Brahms disliked wasting time he propped a book up and read while he played piano. When Brahms was 20 he met Robert Schumann, who called Brahms a genius! Eventually Brahms became one of the most famous composers of his day, with word of his music spreading through his home country and the many surrounding it. Brahms music brought warm and rich romantic music to the classical age. However, Brahms was quite self critical and often did
“Billy initiates the music in his life. He has the potential to triumph over his environment. The lyrics of the soundtrack are also noteworthy, as they imply that Billy is a born dancer.” (Lancioni, 2006, 718)
Igor Stravinsky is considered by many the greatest composer of the 20th Century. Several composers have made breakthroughs and great accomplishments in the past 100 years, but Stravinsky has dominated nearly every trend set. He was born near St. Petersburg, Russia in Oranienbaum, on June 17, 1882. He was born to a famous Russian bass opera singer, Fyodor Ignatyevich Stravinsky.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is an Austrian Composer who created a string of operas, concertos, symphonies, and sonatas that shaped the classical music genre. Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg, Austria. Little did they know, the small city of Salzburg would be the birthplace of one of the most talented musical composers of all time.
Dmitri Shostakovich was Russian composer born on September 25, 1906. He was born and raised in St. Petersburg Russia. He was the second of 3 children. For the first 9 years of his life, he was not involved with music. It wasn’t until he was nine that he started actively learning and playing music, starting with piano lessons taken under his mother. From 1919-1925 he studied piano and composition at St. Petersburg Conservatory. He wrote his First "Classical" symphony as his graduation piece. In 1927 he won an "honorable mention diploma" at the 1st International Piano Competition in Warsaw. Many people saw him as the new hero of Russian music, since Prokofiev and Rachmaninov had fled to the US several years beforehand.
Billy Bob Hunchkin woke up late to freezing water being poured over his face by his parents. It was 6:45 and he has to be at school in at least 30 min. ¨Why did you pour water on my face.¨ exclaimed Billy Bob Hunchkin.
During the 1920’s, Aaron Copland went with the trend and experimented with jazz styles in his music, which proved to be extraordinary in the views of many. His choice for other pieces came through modern music about which he once said, “I just happened upon it in the natural course of my musical exploration.” This was apparent in the way he would use ideals of Neoclassicism in his “Piano Variations.” Copland then hit a downfall in about 1936. He wrote a few works which were harder to perform and not taken in by many audiences due to the use of much more advanced techniques which were uncommon for the time. Copland knew a change had to be made because he quickly saw how many composers were working themselves into a vacuum, so he would follow a new path of the more simplistic American way for much of his life. This “simple to understand” type of writing is what brought audiences back and made Aaron Copland great. He started writing functional music like “The Second Hurricane” and “The Outdoor Adventure” for kids, as well as Of Mice and Men, Or Town, North Star, and The Red Pony for movies; “Music For Radio” for radio; and a few American folk songs. He worked specifically with western themes in three major pieces, “Rodeo” (obvious Western setting), “Billy the Kid” (another setting in the farther west), and the ever so
Edward MacDowell was a popular composer who favored the late romantic programmatic style over the classical German Romanticism that was popular among his American contemporaries (Crawford & Hamberlin, 2013). At the age of 16, MacDowell began studying piano and composition in Europe where he had some of his early compositions published. Upon returning to the United States he continued teaching, composing and performing in the Boston area. After becoming on of the nation’s leading musicians, he began teaching at Columbia University. Prior to his time at Columbia he wrote a few symphonic works, however his duties at the university only allowed him to write smaller pieces (Crawford & Hamberlin, 2013).
Born on June 17, 1882 in Oranienbaum, Russia, Igor Stravinsky was raised in St. Petersburg by his father and mother. The family already with a musical background, Stravinsky did not want to pursue the same career as his father and mother. While attending the University of St. Petersburg, Stravinsky met the son of the composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov who changed his mind from studying law to become a music composer. After the arrival of the first World War, Stravinsky, along with his wife and children, fled from Russia. Stravinsky then proceeded to travel the world with his music, moving to France with his family in 1920. Though Stravinsky moved from New York City to Los Angeles, his time spent in Paris helped influence his inspiration for The Rites of Spring as the Parisian culture was diffused from Russia. During his time in back in Russia, Igor Stravinsky spent a summer in Ustilug where he discovered that the spring season is very influential
