In the ancient times, it was very different than now. All of the resources they used, the way they treated people, and the way they dressed was a big factor. It was also the main difference between now and then. Athens and Sparta both were different from each other. Even though Athens and Sparta were in the same country (Greece.) Athens and Sparta had very different styles of treating people. The way people were treated in both places makes a tough decision for me to pick, especially because I am a girl. Girls were treated like slaves and the males were treated like they had more power. In Athens women took care of the house and watched over the kids, women could not get out of there houses. In Sparta, women were the people to raise strong
In Athen, “Schools taught reading, writing, and mathematics, music, poetry, sport, and gymnastics”. In Sparta, “Boys were taken from parents at age seven and trained in the art of warfare. They were only given a cloak - no shoes or other clothes, and not enough food so they had to steal (to learn survival skills)”. Overall, I think Athens is better and safer to live in then Sparta.
The lifestyle between systems were very different. Athenians were open and had a very modern prospective. Unlike Sparta, in Athens, boys were not forced to join the army. In Athens, you could get a good education. Spartans focused more on strength than education.
Introduction Athens and Sparta were two of the largest, most powerful, and most influential cities of Ancient Greece. They may have both been big and historically well revered, but their societies were structured and ruled very differently. This difference is especially true politically speaking. (Athens & Sparta: Democracy vs. Dictatorship, 2016) Sparta was very focused on growing and maintaining a strong army, in efforts to ward off any uprising from their rule over the Helots.
Athens and Sparta, two rivals of ancient Greece that made the most noise and gave us the most traditions. Though they were close together on a map, they were far apart in what they valued and also how they lived their lives. Spartan and Athenian society were very different in many parts. The differences are what set these two apart, and the things they shared in common are what unified them as Greek city-states. Sparta and Athens shared similarities and differences in their systems of government, military, judgment and views of their women. In addition to this, the social gatherings of Athenians and Spartans that were also similar and different.
Athens and Sparta had many aspects to their culture, and they all contributed to the success both city-states had. If I could time travel back to the past I would prefer living in Sparta, due to their treatment and expectations they held for women. For example, when the Sparta men went to war the women had to look after their husbands property. This included guarding the land from invaders and revolts from slaves. They were also allowed to remarry if their spouse was away at war to long. On the other hand the women in Athens were not even able to choose who they would be married to, and to make matters worse for the women of Athens they would be married at age fifteen. Imagine not being able to choose who your going to live with for the
“Athens Vs Sparta” by Mr.Duckworth states, “Where they differed was that while the spartans had militaristic values, Athenians were democratic. Sparta was an militaristic state. Sparta had an oligarchy government. Spartan women had more freedom and rights than any other greek city-state. Sparta would be a better place to live because, the spartans had a very simple lifestyle, sparta used their army to protect others, and sparta women had more freedom than other greek city-state.
Athens is a better Greek city to live in than Sparta. Sparta is just a place for war and fighting. They don’t care much about anything. They just leave you when you are an infant and make you join a military school at 7! Athens, however, does care.
Ancient Greece was comprised of small city-states, of which Sparta and Athens were two. Athens was renowned as a center of wisdom and learning. The people of Athens were interested in arts, music, and intellectual pursuits. Sparta, on the other hand, was recognized for its military strength. A Spartan's life was centered on the state, because he lived and died to serve the state. Although the competing city-states of Sparta and Athens were individually different as well as governmentally diverse, they both managed to become dominating powers in Ancient Greece.
Athens and Sparta were two of the most powerful and well known cities among all the Greek nations. Most would find it easier to find more similarities among these two groups of mighty people. But there are some differences between these two power houses. For instance the way that these cities were governed and their political procedures and functions were quite different from each other.
Athens: In Athens, the government was controlled by the people. They elected all of their officials into office. These offices were the Ekklesia, the Boule, the Heliaea, and the Magistrates. You had to be a male adult Athenian citizen to take part in government. Sparta: In Sparta, any free male citizen had the right to be active in public life and government.
The people of Athens and Sparta on the outside would seem to be far different yet they shared some fundamental similarities. As an Athenian citizen you could wield quite a bit of power as an individual. It was the citizen part that was difficult to obtain. If you were of Athenian blood and an adult male, you could participate in the government, the more money and status you had the higher you could go.
“Where they differed, was that while Sparta had militaristic values, Athenians were democratic,” Stated Mr. Duckworth in the article, “Athens and Sparta.” Athens and Sparta were two Greek city-states. They were constantly fighting over power power of Greece. Athens would have been a better place to live because, they were not focused on only military, people could get a good education, and they had a better government.
The difference in culture between Athens, and Sparta in ancient times was drastic, while being less than 200 miles apart from each other. Athens was a city of democracy, and learning. While Sparta was a militaristic,
Athens has government that men can be in but do not get paid. In Sparta it is ruled by a group of wealthy men there are two kings who are the armies. In Athens boys go to school and learn different subjects and get an education and later in life get a job. Young boys in Sparta at the age 7 are sent to learn how to be a soldier and do tough training. Girls in Athens are taught by their mothers
The ancient civilization of Greece contained many different city-states; two of these city-states were Sparta and Athens. Sparta and Athens were different in their values, politics, and societies. Sparta was focused on their military, discipline, and to have a strong state. Athens was a democratic state that was peaceful and where women were open to culture and democracy. How do these two city-states differ?
