In the book 1984 By “George Orwell” he uses the element of fear to show control over the natives of Oceania. For example Julia, But fear won’t stop her from speaking her mind. Julia comes off as a free spirited rebel. She is very open and speaks her mind just like she was when she opened up about her love for Winston. Her experiences and relationship with her lover Winston is very strong, but she can come off as passive aggressive and can somewhat be rebellious. Julia and Winston differ in many ways for example their age and interest, but her major interest is Winston and sex. She continues speaking her mind knowing she can be in trouble like her hate for the party. Julia has so many concerns for the party just like Winston but they. That is what makes Julia and Winston so complementary. Julia and Winston differ in many ways throughout the book 1984. Julia is a much younger women and knows exactly what she wants. Winston is much older middle aged and unattractive in appearance man. They both have different views against the party. Winston wants Oceania to change how its society is ran and hates what its government is changing it to be now. Also Winston wants to change Oceania to be normal and let the natives of the society have an opinion but instead they are changing everything for example changing words into newspeak which makes the words smaller but is also making the society less intelligent. . On the other hand Julia’s views are much different. She wants to value her
She is a very beautiful, young and free- spirited. All these qualities Winston doesn’t possess therefore he hated Julia even more in the beginning but then ends up to trust, love and enjoy being around Julia. The prospect of this is that Winston and Julia their fresh and exciting love affair that can only allow them to see their momentary benefits and not the consequences that may occur in the
Julia, just like Winston, was tortured. She acted distance she didn't talk to Winston at first, which is unlike her because she used to be very social. She also seemed like she did not want to be seen with winston, when she looked at him with disgust. Instead of being very happy and full of life she was very tense and in a gray area just like everyone else in Oceania. Physically “her face was sallower, and there was a long scar...across her forehead and temple… her waist had grown thicker and, in a surprising way, had stiffened” (291) Her body was described as feeling like stone. He is suggesting that something similar happened to Julia that happened to Winston. Julia mentions betraying Winston showing that their tortured could have ended the same
In the Book 1984, Winston and Julia first hope to have a relationship together and second, hope to not get caught. Julia showed hope when she slipped the note to Winston, when the consequences could have been horrifying if he had turned her in. Winston demonstrated hope when he secretly agreed to meet with Julia. They both loved each other and worried about getting caught by the Thought Police and being tortured and killed.
The love between Julia and Winston made both of them reckless in a dangerous situation. The temptation of being together was enough to cause their capture and ruin their relationship. By the end of 1984, both the lives of Julia and Winston were altered negatively due to their carelessness caused by their love.
In George Orwell’s 1984 novel, Julia and Winston stand out as contrasting figures in their fight against the Party. Their ways of defying the Party and the results of their actions show us a lot about their character and the power of the totalitarian regime they resist. While both characters want freedom from the Party's control, their methods and outcomes are very different, highlighting the complexities of resistance in a dystopian world. Winston rebels against the Party, mainly through his thoughts and ideas. He is deeply upset by the Party's control over truth and reality and tries to fight it by keeping a secret diary where he writes his true thoughts.
Winston’s memories, relationships and interactions with others play a key role in his rebellion. Throughout the book Winston shows an affection towards Julia. Winston’s initial relationship with Julia is a political act, however over time he grows to care for her which is forbidden in his society.
As their story goes on, Julia comes forth proclaiming she is the same as Winston, in the sense that her hatred and rebellion are on the same levels. Their relationship represents a form of rebellion because sexual relations between men and women in Oceania are looked down upon. It does not just lie in their physical relationship, but emotionally. They express to each other throughout the book how much they matter to one another, and how they are in love. They find ways around the constant surveillance to meet up with each other.
In the novel 1984, George Orwell sets up a dystopia that reveals basic human qualities occur even when the people are brainwashed out of the,. This story takes place in an alternate society where life is radically different than what the world is today. The government has an extreme control on its people, brain washing them and suppressing every aspect of human connection. The citizens are taught to think that all information from the government is true even when it is blatantly obvious it isn’t. This novel allows the reader to witness the genesis of a primal love through the action of rebellion. Winston and Julia fall in love with each other as the book continues.
Described as “young”, “free-spirited”, and “practical”, Julia differs from Winston in many ways. She is open about her sexuality, and sleeps with several party members before she meets Winston. Although these acts are frowned upon in the eyes of The Party, Julia doesn’t intend them that way, and tells Winston that it is only to satisfy her own desires. Julia only “..questioned the teachings of the party when they in some way touched upon her life”(153). She was too young to remember a life that contradicted The Party’s teachings, and because she believed all Party propaganda to be lies, Julia had no interest in what those teachings were anyway.
In Volume 3 Julia and Winston’s relationship will cease to exist. Julia and Winston will be taken to the Ministry of Love. I think while they are in the Ministry of love they both will go through horrifying torture in order for them to tell their secrets because in The Book it explained that the Immensity of Love was about torturing and not actually loving at all (216) . While in the control of the Ministry of Love they will attempt to pin Julia and Winston against each other in order to get them to talk. The ministry will drive a wedge between them.
Julia is first shown as a sexless figure since she is a member of the Anti-Sex League. When Winston first sees Julia, he does not know her name. He only knows that she works in the Fiction Department. Winston “disliked nearly all women, and especially the young and pretty ones. It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers-out of unorthodoxy” (10). This demonstrates that at the beginning of the novel, he does not like Julia. He thinks that she is dangerous, and wants to get him in trouble. He thinks that she is a member of the thought police and that she will turn him in. This proves the assumptions of men and how Winston just assumes that Julia is dangerous. According to Meia, a writer for Medium, “Winston started out hating Julia simply because he wanted to have sex with her. In knowing, or assuming, that that would never happen, Winston finds himself cheated out of something that he feels he ought to have” (Meia). Winston does not like Julia because he feels like she will get him in trouble, but he has an attraction toward her. With her Anti-sex League sash, he thinks that she will follow the rules of the Party. He feels like if he would have sex with the young and beautiful Julia without getting caught, then that would be the ultimate rebel and they will defeat Big Brother. Winston thinks that all women in Oceania are all complete followers of the Party and will not disobey the laws. However, Julia's appearance deceives Winston, and he finds out that she is unorthodox and has the same intention as he
3. Describe Julia’s character as it relates to Winston. How is she different from him? How is
Winston fell in love with a woman he worked with named Julia. He and Julia shared the same beliefs and frustrations with the government. In the beginning of the book, Winston inwardly believes that Julia is an amateur spy or a member of the thought police. during the two minute hey, let's and thinks that “her [Julia’s] real object had been to listen to him and make sure whether he was shouting loudly enough.” (Orwell, 61) Winston also said, “I wanted to rape you[Julia] and then murder you”(orwell 120) Winston questioning Juliet's true intentions show his distrust for her and him wanting to rape and murder her shows how Winston has a strong hate for Julia. Winston's view of Julia also shifts. This is exemplified when with his having a mental breakdown at the end of the book. He screams, “Julia! Julia! Julia, my love! Julia!" (orwell, 280) Not only did this outcry show his love for Julia, it also put Winston in great danger, Winston questioned how much time he had added to his servitude with that show emotion. The shows another major change in Winston character. He goes from being very suspicious of Juliet the risking a lot just to call for her. This perspective shifts shows how much Winston changed during the book, he is crying out for someone he said he wanted to rape and kill earlier in the
