Duke University and The Ohio State University are two really unique colleges where I am thinking about attending. These colleges both have what I am looking for in a University. Between these colleges, I think that the decision will be extremely tough. I love both schools’ locations, students, atmosphere, and competitiveness. These colleges have some similarities, but in many ways are complete opposites. Looking at all of the unique characteristics of Duke and Ohio State, I believe that this will be a tough choice.
When I think of Duke University one word comes to mind, elitism. The total enrollment for undergraduates for this university is a little less than 7,000, which is a medium-sized campus. This is one factor that makes Duke extremely

One that sticks out in my mind is that they are not a university known for football. Being involved in a football school all of my life, I have really enjoyed getting to tailgate and cheer for our boys. At Duke, they do have football, but the school is not all about it. Another negative of Duke is that students can only apply early by doing early decision. This is bad because with my ACT score, to get in I would need to apply early. This is a downfall because I am kind of undecided about which university I am going to attend. Also, I am not sure if I will receive enough scholarships and financial aid to help decrease the cost of this extremely expensive school. This university costs about $60,000 a year for their undergraduate program including room and board. Along with the cost, comes the distance. Duke is about eight hours away which is may be a little too far away for me because of how close I am with my family. Also, I have never lived on my own or been independent at all so such a drastic change might be a little too much for me to …show more content…
One of my favorite things about this university is that it is incredibly involved in football. They also have a spectacular medical school that I could attend after graduating. Ohio State is known for their medical school and also has many connections from doctors worldwide. This university is also a lot closer to home so it would be easier for me as well. The Ohio State University is about two hours away, which is a perfect distance to experience the full college life while still having the option to come home on the weekends. Ohio State is a lot cheaper than Duke as well. Their tuition is about $25,000. Also on the subject of tuition, nearly forty five percent of students graduate with no debt. The university is ranked sixteenth best public university in the nation and first in Ohio. Ohio State has an average ACT score of 28, not too off from mine. The university also has a perfect student to teacher ratio that is 19:1. OSU is number seven in studying abroad programs. This is another one of my favorite things about this university because I love traveling. Like Duke, Ohio State has many clubs and activities that students can get involved in. This may help when trying to make friends in such a large
Some people prefer large schools and others prefer small schools. Iowa State has a total enrollment of about “32,900 students”(“Iowa…”). Iowa only has a total enrollment of “29,750 students” (“Iowa…”). That is a difference of 3,200 students. Every year there are about “5,350 freshmen coming in to Iowa State” (“Iowa…”), Iowa only has “4,450 freshmen coming in” (“Iowa…”) making Iowa State a little bit bigger than Iowa. Since Iowa State is a larger school there is a higher student to faculty ratio with “19-1” (“Iowa…”). Iowa has a lower student to faculty ratio which is “16-1” (“Iowa…”). Class sizes also differ at these two schools. Iowa State is “40 or more students per class” (“Iowa…”), which is much bigger than Iowa’s which is “10-19 students per
The mission statement at UNC Wilmington states that they are committed to student engagement, creative inquiry, critical thinking, thoughtful expression and resposible citizenship. These qualities are things that every student should look for when the big deciosion of where to go to college comes up. College is a big stepping stone for students, it shouldnt be about where all your friends are going, or where the parties are gonna be. The education and enviorment you are wanting to be in is what matters. I have dreams and aspirations of becoming a nurse, getting a BSN degree. UNCW has factors that stand out against any other school. Job prospects and salary are high, this means that when I leave UNCW I wont have to worry about whether or not
All universities have one primary purpose: to provide a higher education to its students. However, between any two universities there are some considerable differences in academics, campus size, and even athletics. Two such establishments are Mississippi State University and the University of Alabama.
When comparing The University of Findlay (UF) and Ohio Dominican University (ODU), I have found similarities and differences that can be seen as positive and negative. ODU is a private, Catholic university that covers ninety three acres of land and was founded in 1911. There are 2,600 students enrolled at ODU. Of the students, fifty seven percent are female and forty three percent are male. ODU has undergraduate and graduate programs. The University has sixteen athletic teams that compete in the NCAA Division II and provides more than forty organizations for the students to be involved in. (“How ODU Rank Among America’s Best Colleges?”) (“ODU Quick Facts”). ODU offers more than forty five majors (“Ohio Dominican Offers More than 45 Majors”) and does have middle school education for teaching, which is a major that I am considering.
Throughout our state and our nation, there are a variety of options when it comes to higher education. In the state of North Carolina, one of the many community colleges is Fayetteville Technical Community College, also referred to as FTCC. One of the many universities in our state is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is also called UNC-Chapel Hill. I chose these two institutions because they are two of the places I am looking at to get my various degrees. When looking at these two places of education, we can see that there are many similarities, but there are also differences.
Being in the middle of high school, I am thinking about my future more than ever now. I have made mostly A’s and B’s all of my life, so I will probably have the chance to go to a good college if I choose to do so. This decision will be one of the biggest decisions of my life, and I will need to put much thought and research into this decision. Early in my life, I began going to Clemson University football, baseball, and soccer games. For this reason, I am now a big Clemson fan, and I hope to go there for my college career. Another college I am interested in is Furman University. I have grown up most of my life living on the outskirts of Furman, and I have also been to many sports
There are many qualities that intrigue and draw students apply to Duke, and one is their academics program, that what makes Duke so desirable. Admission to Duke is very selective and competitive. They have received over 28,000 applications for the Class of 2020 and admitted 10.4% of applications. According to The Huffington Post, Duke is one of the ten toughest universities in the United States to get into. Duke University practices need-blind admissions and meets 100% of admitted students of admitted students’ demonstrated need. About 50 % percent of all Duke students receive some form of financial aid, which includes need-based aid, athletics aid, and merit aid. From 2001 to 2011, Duke has
While comparing and contrasting both UNC Chapel Hill and Wake Forest I discovered very helpful information to help me choose which college may be best for me to attend. Based on what I researched I would prefer
I thrive in smaller, yet motivated, environments where I am given the opportunity to reach my full potential, which is why I believe TCU would be a perfect fit for me. I am excited by the reputation of passionate and dedicated professors at TCU. I know that my professors at TCU will give their full attention to me and support me whether it be academically or in everyday life. Additionally, I find the TCU spirit captivating. I hope to try out for the TCU Show Girls if I have the honor of becoming a TCU Horned Frog.
I have fallen in love with UNCW after first-hand seeing it for myself last summer. I know a lot of alumni from UNCW and have heard nothing but positive things about the school, teachers, and its courses. I am interested in majoring marketing or business and UNCW excels in both of these areas for me. In addition, it provides many courses that assist me in meeting my goals for my career. I would love to attend UNCW because it is close to my hometown but also far enough to where I can be an independent. Not only do I believe the University of North Carolina Wilmington is the right fit for me and my future career but also has every aspect that I am looking for in a college. It has the perfect location, the perfect size, very affordable, and the
The Ohio State University (OSU) is my second college choice. Being a Buckeye has been a dream of mine since I knew what college was, but with the research I have done, I do not like the size or location of the college, however OSU does offer a really good athletic training program and that's what interests me most about the college. College is not cheap or easy but it is doable. Tuition for OSU is $11,285 per semester (collegecalc.org). With a larger college there is going to be a larger enrollment number. According to (osu.edu) there is an average of 50,000 students enrolled at OSU. Having a large variety of choices in majors is convenient. A total of 175 majors are offered at OSU (osu.edu).The recommended ACT score ranges from 26-30 (osu.edu). Scholarships and financial aid are both offered at OSU. The scholarships offered at OSU are various types of merit scholarships awarded to those students who qualify (osu.edu).Financial aid at OSU is like other universities ,they have grants loans and work study( osu.edu).Like Ohio University , OSU offers extracurricular known as intramural sports and many other programs. Although it is not my first choice if I get the chance I would become a Buckeye.
The University of Oklahoma is a four year Division 1 public university located in Norman, Oklahoma, and is home to the Sooners; “Boomer Sooner”. The University of Oklahoma’s Womens Softball team won the 2015 Women’s College Softball World Series, and their football team is ranked 1st in the Big 12 rankings. Kansas State University is a four year Division 1 public university located in Manhattan, Kansas, and is home to the Wildcats; “EMAW - Every Man A Wildcat”. Kansas State University has just recently added a new Women’s Soccer program! I have a 3.4 GPA, I participate in Link Crew which is a program offered at Campus High School that helps with freshman orientation, and basically helps many different freshmen sculpt/decide the path’s for their futures based on their decisions now in high school. I have played soccer for 13 years, and am currently playing club soccer at Sedgwick County Soccer Association for the ‘99 Wichita Cheetahs Elite, and I also play on the girls Varsity soccer team at Campus High School. Kansas State University is a better choice and fit because it is in-state, there are many degrees, and options to choose from, the acceptance rate is higher than the University of Oklahoma’s, and there are minimal standards on applying/enrollment requirements, and there are ways to earn many scholarships whether it be through academic scholarships or earning it through athletics, and the tuition and
While college basketball and professional basketball both are the exact same sport, they are completely different styles of game. Both have five players on the court at a time, with three referees and a coach. The point system is the same, which consists of one point, two points, or three points. Despite these similarities, they are very different. Between the effort of players, the officiating and style of a game, and the overall behavior of players and role media plays, watching or playing each of these two leagues results in very different outcomes.
Many problems going around about college sports and colleges athletes. Most colleges all over the nation allow the college to have sports but then there are some that don't. Being in a sport in college is just like basically having a job. You would need to be dedicated to this and not have much time for anything else. Practices can last anywhere from 4 to 6 hours a day just for one thing. Kind of crazy to think about something like this. Many people just simply don't have the time to do sports in college because they have a real job outside of school. This is different compared to high school because you would have time then and now you don't have much time for anything else at all. There are college athletes basically everywhere you go. Whether they play for universities or juts community colleges, it's all the same thing. The only big difference about this is the price differences. Universities are much more expensive then when playing for a community college so that's why people get scholarships.
I also wanted to go to an in-state university, so that I could be close to my family. ASU was the only state school to offer such a program for students like me that are un-sure on which career path they want to take or need guidance pinpointing themselves to a certain area of study. I also feel that ASU being one of the biggest universities in the nation has many more opportunities for their students in contrast to going to a smaller
