Death. Although it's a natural, necessary part of existence, it is such a tremendous topic that can be viewed from a massive number of angles - religion, philosophy and science. But, what really matters in addition to what was mentioned before is our point of view on life and how we’ll deal with our struggles. Are we going to survive? Will we ever lose hope and give up? The poets Emily Dickinson and Peter Porter achieved excellent conflicting prospects and viewpoints of this in their poems “Because I Could Not Stop For Death” and “A Consumer’s Report”, through the use of language, structure and varying poetic devices that I am going to analyse in this essay. Starting with the first poem, “A Consumer’s Report” by Peter Porter, the speaker looks at life from a negative angle and discusses the struggles and difficulties he’s facing. The speaker does not acknowledge the plenty of life contests, difficulties and improvements that should be made in life as such in the first poem and rather decided to mention only one. Because it already passed the level of suffering and already gave up on life, and in addition,she wanted other parts to stand out. This one life struggle was mentioned in this phrase, “We passed the School, where Children strove”. This scene could be seen as emotional as it is flashback of the speaker’s childhood because usually, childhood is more fun, less stressful with less responsibilities, etc... But instead, it was only a sign of difficulty. We conclude this by the poet’s use of words, because instead of using positive words, she used “strove” which emphasises struggles of a vigorous fight maybe just with themselves or with other
