Ever wondered what food, woman, or everyday life was back in Ancient Egypt? Ancient Egypt was very different than America is today. In this essay, I will teach you about all those topics!
Most of people’s everyday lives were the same. Young children were given a lot of time to play, and they started school at the age of seven if their families could afford it. Some main crafts they did were carpentry, glassmaking, pottery, weaving, and leatherworking. The way the pharaohs collected taxes was by claiming part of a person's produce, merchandise, or property. Egyptians used boats as transportation for 3 reasons. The 3 reasons are farming land is too precious to waste on the roads, roads get washed away too easily during the annual flood, and Egypt
Civilization. The word “civilization” comes from the Latin term for “city.” The first civilizations were the river-valley civilizations, so-called because they all developed alongside major rivers to secure an adequate water supply for agricultural production. 2 of the greatest river-valley civilizations were Mesopotamia and Egypt. All though they both supported having a patriarchal leader or king, Egypt had a strong, centralized government, whereas Mesopotamia was decentralized, and built based on small city-states operating independently.
What similarities and differences did Egypt and Mesopotamia have and why was Egypt more politically unified than its neighbor, Mesopotamia? I think in order to answer these questions it is important to look at how both societies lived. Egypt and Mesopotamia were two civilizations existing during the time period of 2000-1200 BCE.(text, 97) These civilizations were shaped by their environment, involved with trade, and faced changes in government after the 100 year drought; however, they differed in that Egypt was shaped by the Nile, traded goods for goods and changed their outlook on the pharaoh who was ruler of all; whereas, Mesopotamia was shaped by the Tigris and Euphrates, traded money for goods, and had a ruler over rulers. The
Secondly, the methods of rebellion, the government’s response to the rebellion, and the outcome of both revolutions were alike. One method of rebellion that was prominent in both revolutions was peaceful protest. In the Egyptian Revolution, that lasted 18 days, people peacefully set up tents in Tahrir square to protest Mubarak presidency. One example when the Americans peacefully protested in the American Revolution was when the British implemented the tea act, that put taxes on tea to help the British East India Company financially survive. The Americans peacefully protested by not buying tea. The response by the government in both revolutions were similar they were both destructive (America revolution was also peaceful and destructive but
Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia present a valuable area of historical research. They are of great importance mostly because of their ethnic kinship (Watson, 2017). In such case, comparison and contrast essay is very promising as causal relationships can be formed based on a mutual starting point. This comparison-contrast essay focuses on differences and similarities in these societies’ economic, political and cultural life in order to make further implications regarding the circumstances the peoples of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia faced.
When you look back in history to the development and the contributions of both the Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations, you see that there was a lot accomplished, as well as a lot created. The earliest forms of writing developed in Mesopotamia, while Egypt was referred to the “Gift of the Nile” by traveler Herodotus (McKay,42). Development of cities was another major marker, especially in the “old world”, of how people eventually determined civilizations and what they represented. According to McKay, civilizations were determined by people who considered themselves more “civilized”, urban people mostly. Made up of cities, written rules of law, and social justice codes, Mesopotamia and Egypt would develop into two of the largest civilizations in history.
As well as controlling the surplus, the Pharaoh had the head duties of protecting it. The ancient Egyptians used many unique factors to help protect their civilization. Soldiers were used, much like in other ancient civilizations, to protect the Nile River, expand their land settlement area and support the rule of the Pharaoh. During the New Kingdom, Egyptian armies became a powerhouse and very active allowing for expansion. Ancient Egypt could be protected quite well due to environmental factors including the river and desert. The river being surround by 1000’s of miles of desert made it easier to predict where attacks may come from. The Nile itself was also be able to used thanks to its slow moving nature. This provided a great highway that promoted economic and political stability and uniformity (Lockard, 2011).
Despite the ancient Egyptians' conservative nature and keeping to their core values, there were many changes within the infrastructure of their society during the middle kingdom. When Historians and scholars study the Old Kingdom, and the Middle Kingdom, One will notice that alterations to their religion, art, and architecture changed through both periods in history. Internal forces, as well as outside influences, shaped ancient Egyptian civilization. One would argue that the terms Old, middle and knew Kingdoms were of a hellenistic idea, instead of a Ancient Egyptian Ideology. The Old Kingdom founds its reign lasted from 2700- 2200 B.C. This time period consisted of the third through the sixth dynasty, beginning with Djoser and ending
There were 80% inpopelation. Women Served as dancers, Maids, or hairdressers and different people were also social classes. Trade The Egyptians traded with lands outside of Egypt. Main exports include grain, vegetables, and gold.
Ancient Egyptian religion was very different than most others. Ancient Egyptians were Polytheistic and they had over 4,000 gods that they worshipped. The most common gods that were worshipped were the Sun god, Re (The Sun god has many other names as well.) and Osiris, the god of the dead and ruler of the underworld. They believed that Re sailed across the sky in a boat.
The ancient Egyptian and ancient Greek civilizations are two of the oldest known civilizations in our history. The Egyptian civilization, based in the eastern part of North Africa, is believed to have started around 3150 BC and continued till the end of the Pharaoh rule in 31 BC. The ancient Greek civilization is believed to have been in effect from 1100 BC till about 146 BC. Many similarities and differences existed between these two civilizations, as even though they co-existed during a certain timeframe (1150 BC to 146 BC), they were located in different geographical areas. Because of these differences in geography, both these civilizations were subjected to different kinds of exposure, which included contact with other civilization and cultural inheritance. In the political sphere, we find that the Egyptian civilization had stronger emphasis on central authority, while the Greeks had a more decentralized structure, where powers were distributed over the cities and the states as well. As far as art is concerned, we find that the Egyptians were more involved in creating great monumental and gaudy structures, while the Greeks were more involved in creating smaller, more literary pieces of art.
The people groups in ancient Egyptian were very different than our societies social groups today. Ancient Egyptians were grouped in a hierarchical system with the Pharaoh at the top and farmers and slaves at the bottom. The groups of people nearest to the top of society were the richest and most powerful. The Pharaoh was believed to be a god on earth and had the most power. He was responsible for making laws and keeping order. Ensuring that Egypt was not attacked or invaded by enemies and for keeping the gods happy so that the Nile flooded and there was a good harvest. The Vizier was the Pharaoh's chief advisor
In comparing Ancient Egypt and modern day Americas, I found a few similarities and differences in their every day lifestyles. Things like religion, government, social class, writing, and their job specializations. It was surprising to me to find out that the ancient Egyptians way of leaving was somewhat like ours. Of course there are heavier differences, but still they were very modern for their times. Also I am in strong belief that we learned many things that are in our culture today from Ancient Egypt.
When comparing The Shang River civilization (China) The Nile River civilization (Egypt) during the Bronze Age there were similarities and differences. Politically, they were similar and different because both governments were a dynasty and they governed their lands differently socially they were similar and different because both civilizations had distinct social classes and they had differences when it came to women’s rights. However, based on close observation (or close analysis) Ancient Egypt was more successful.
Known as one of the earliest civilizations, Mesopotamia and Egypt both share set amounts of similarities along with a share of striking distinctions. Environmentally, these two civilizations were formed in similar surroundings, yet their weather patterns show distinctions. Politically, both governments derived from a monarch, yet their laws and punishments distinguished the two’s court systems. Economically, they both shared prosperous success in similar manners. Socially, although the two lands followed a hierarchy, the value of women contrasted. Culturally, they both believed in a higher order of creation; however, their views of them were polar opposites. Intellectually, these two societies developed skilled abilities and creations that
The civilizations of America, Africa, and Europe each had their own political, economic, and religious systems that changed drastically when people from each continent encountered one another. In the Americas, the Native Americans had developed large and massive empires that would come to marvel the world. In Africa, there were are also large empires, home to millions of people. Western Europe on the other hand did not have any large empires or well organized societies. However, this would all change when the Europeans came in contact with the people in the Americas and Africa. It would be the Europeans that rose up while the other races fell.
