Service organizations have always played a vital role in society. For decades, those in need have always been able to find assistance with basic needs at a local church or shelter. As society has evolved, so has the availability and types of assistance that can be found. There are now various charitable organizations offering a wide range of specialized services to those in need. Owasso Community Resources and Goodwill Industries of Tulsa are two such organizations. Both are registered non-profits and listed among the membership of the United Way. Both offer services that fill the needs of the communities they serve. However, they differ greatly in the type of people they serve, the programs that are offered by each …show more content…
These programs give people the opportunity to learn marketable skills as well as helping them find employment when the program is finished. Workers with severe disabilities are partnered with a job coach or employed at a group worksite that is run by either Goodwill or a participating business partner. Jobs programs vary from janitorial to office, but are set up fit the needs of the community they serve. While nearly all service agencies will accept monetary donations to their organization, item donations typically must be based on the services that the agency provides. Donations of non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products would be best suited for donation at Owasso Community Resources where they are used to stock their pantry shelves. Owasso Community Resources also accepts donations of school supplies throughout the year and they maintain a “most needed items” list on their website, which they encourage community groups to share as an additional way to help spread the word about their community’s needs. Clothing, furniture, and household goods would be welcomed donations for Goodwill Industries of Tulsa. These are sorted by workers and items that are in good condition are repaired, cleaned, and then sold at a discount in their stores, with proceeds
When applying for a position at a job, managers always check to see how much experience you have in order to check if you are qualified. When filling out a college application there are always questions that ask to write down any extra curricular activities you participated in or any clubs/service work you did and for how long. It is important to be a part of the community and to be dedicated to one or two locations for a certain amount of time to show commitment and effort. A student that has been a part of an organization for about three months and has not missed will be prefered at a college than a student that goes five times a month. Community service does not only help build relationships but allows students to spend their time learning new skills and it will benefit them in the future. Community service for high school seniors should be mandatory because it will teach the students how to be responsible, allow them to explore in depth something related to their career and improve their communication skills.
The Salvation Army is the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in the country. The Salvation Army Thrift Stores raise money for its rehabilitation programs by selling donated used items such as clothing, housewares, furniture and toys at a cheaper price for those in need.

During The Crucible Abigail Williams has a dishonest, conniving, and aggressive nature, which causes others in the play to be affected and many people killed. She is very rude and very mean to the others, and she lies about things to make herself look good, and make her look innocent. People in the village know Abigail as a innocent child, but she is really a evil person and she causes people to be harmed. As Abigail goes throughout the play , people begin realizes that she is evil , and that she has been lying.
People with disabilities suffer discrimination such as the refuse of companies to hire those peoples. An estimated 386 million of the world’s working-age persons have some kind of disability, according to ILO. In a recent research, they found that two-third of the unemployed and disable persons said that they would like to work but they could not find jobs.
Additionally, the stores provide thousands of employment opportunities for the general public and work therapy opportunities for people in rehabilitation to learn valuable vocational skills and regain their self-esteem. Salvation Army’s work value is unbelievable, most workers at thrift store do not get paid for services. Their time allots them a room at one of the many Salvation Army shelters, or services for childcare. at the centers boundary work.that what I reflect on at this agency is a home away from home. Salvation Army in Hartford, CT is a positive base for the adult/youth to grow academically, emotionally in today’s society. This structure might not be the ideal place for most to work or shop but it is a second chance environment
When you give to the less fortunate, you shouldn’t expect anything in return, right? That’s why whenever I donate my time to the community, I don’t ask for anything in return. If I were to help with community non-profit organizations, the first place I would go help is at Habitat for Humanity international center.
However, SOX was not the end of the story. 2008 ushered in, what is now
There are other agencies that are funded purely on donations alone. The Salvation Army is one of these agencies, and it offers assistance to the society in dire need in ways such as housing, health, providing support, clothing, food etc. (The Salvation Army 2009)
Goodwill Industries do not hold fundraising events or solicit cash donations, but financial donations are gratefully accepted. Most of these Industries set offer employment with higher opportunities for disabled and those with barriers to employment. Some of the services that the disabled perform include, Light Assembly, sorting, labeling and Packaging. They are also involved in: shrink Wrapping, Mailing, Blister Packing, Craft projects and Stuffing Envelopes (Keeler, 1992).
Both of these justice issues are obvious to members of the community. Luckily, La Crosse has several resources available to people who are homeless or are living in poverty with the Salvation Army being the most popular resource. The Salvation Army provides men, women, and families with the following services: three meals a day, a place to sleep, case management, referrals to other community resources, alcohol and drug abuse counseling, employment education and assistance, and shower and laundry facilities. As stated earlier, this is just one resource of many that is available to members of the community.
Having workers with disabilities can be beneficial to organizations. Sotoa & Kleiner, 2013, recommend to incorporate disability into the agency’s diversity statement, increase supervisor knowledge of the employment of people with
Better Runoff: California is a coastal state so it has an easy way to get rid of its sewage and runoff. They just have it get drained out into the Sea. However, what if cities could reroute their pipelines into a treatment plant instead. With that many people in one area there is bound to be a lot of wastewater. Why should all this water be wasted instead of being used? Though it doesn’t sound very sanitary it is already being done not only there, but in other places, such as Nevada and Arizona. Although, with the huge population there needs to be more treatment plants in order to keep up with the amount of people living there. According to Gary Wockner, "Enough water flows into the ocean from Southern California’s streets and sewers to meet all of the area’s water needs—that’s right ALL of them (2015)."
A person with a disability, or handicap, can be defined as someone with a physical or mental impairment, which has a substantial or long-term adverse affect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities (Employment 2). Handicap workers face many challenges in the work place that the average person overlooks. Also, many special arrangements and alterations have been made to the workplace for people with handicaps. Accessibility, transportation, workload, and salary are just some of the many issues that must be considered with the prospect of employing the handicap.
In Maryland, 75 hours of community service are required for students to graduate. Getting in the way of many after school activities, students should not be required to have community service hours to get a diploma.
