Service organizations have always played a vital role in society. For decades, those in need have always been able to find assistance with basic needs at a local church or shelter. As society has evolved, so has the availability and types of assistance that can be found. There are now various charitable organizations offering a wide range of specialized services to those in need. Owasso Community Resources and Goodwill Industries of Tulsa are two such organizations. Both are registered non-profits and listed among the membership of the United Way. Both offer services that fill the needs of the communities they serve. These programs give people the opportunity to learn marketable skills as well as helping them find employment when the program is finished. Workers with severe disabilities are partnered with a job coach or employed at a group worksite that is run by either Goodwill or a participating business partner. Jobs programs vary from janitorial to office, but are set up fit the needs of the community they serve. While nearly all service agencies will accept monetary donations to their organization, item donations typically must be based on the services that the agency provides. Donations of non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products would be best suited for donation at Owasso Community Resources where they are used to stock their pantry shelves. Owasso Community Resources also accepts donations of school supplies throughout the year and they maintain a “most needed items” list on their website, which they encourage community groups to share as an additional way to help spread the word about their community’s needs. Clothing, furniture, and household goods would be welcomed donations for Goodwill Industries of Tulsa. These are sorted by workers and items that are in good condition are repaired, cleaned, and then sold at a discount in their stores, with proceeds
