In Maryland, 75 hours of community service are required for students to graduate. Getting in the way of many after school activities, students should not be required to have community service hours to get a diploma. Having to plan throughout the years of High School when and how you are going to get community service hours in can be very stressful in many ways. High School is when people really start buckling down and making sure to get everything done, from homework to studying for big tests. Being forced to do the extra three hours or so of work everyday could build a great deal of stress for students by taking away the time to do those things. It could also cut into the time to ready for the upcoming sports that many students take part in. In addition to taking away many hours of people's free time after school hours, the required 75 hours of community service is also pushing the students to do too much at one time. It isn't fair to the students who have to go home with backpacks full of homework each and every day, do their three or four hours of service, and still find a way to get the amount of sleep they need to repeat …show more content…
Once he/she is old enough, he/she is going to want to get a job, and having to do service for hours a day is going to prevent the ability to do that. Although managers like to see that you have some experience doing other things, he/she might not like the fact that the applicant would only be able to work two or three hours a day. All in all, requiring students to do 75 hours of community service is a bad idea. Not only does it cut into personal time such as football practice to studying for a big test, it pushes students to do too much at one time. Also. not being able to have that free time after school prevents the student from being able to hold a good job since he/she would only be able to work around two to three hours a
Many high schools around the country have made community service hours mandatory in order for the seniors to graduate. Not everyone agrees that this should be a requirement because seniors already have enough on their plate. When seniors are about to graduate, it does not matter how many tasks they have to complete as a requirement if they do not feel like doing it and they have no motivation they will not complete
Above all, Making students work a specific number of hours in community service can improve work ethic. It will also show students that hard work is something that they will have to do to be successful in life. If you do not know what hard work is, how will you be fortunate in life. This one of those things
Is graduating a goal for you? To be the first one to graduate in your family? It’s like as if you’re almost there, just one more step but you need one more requirement to be eligible. In this article “Pro/Con: Should Student Service Learning Hours Be Mandatory?” By Claire Koeing, it states the opinion of why high school students should and shouldn’t do community service as a requirement to graduate high school. Many have their own opinion of why it is and isn’t important to have community service as a requirement. High school students mainly seniors already have so much stress and to do, but this does prepare them and give them a taste of how it will be after graduation.
It is apparent that the individual is out of touch with his/her environment, as we live in a time of isolation. This view of a frightful outside world is a common mindset in people, prompting them to stay home with the excuse that some things are not worth experiencing. Beyond this misconception, is a world that although may need some work, has opportunities for every kind of person. In fact, a "frightful outside world" can change with the contribution of a helping hand; this is what makes community service imperative. There is no better way to encourage students in assisting their communities than implementing service requirements in High School, and various sources explain the benefits behind these standards. A few of these excerpts include "Community Service
High school students are really busy it is hard for them to find time for thing like volunteering. A lot of students have afterschool jobs or practices. They might not get home until seven or eight o’clock. Transportation could also be an issue for students. If they don’t have there own car it might be hard for the to get to the place they have to volunteer. That is the second reason students should not be obliged to
Although community service is a great way to give back to the community, it has been tainted by its use as a requirement for high school graduates. Forcing volunteer work should be recognized for more than just a bare minimum, is unfair to those who have other obligations and provides no lasting benefit to the students. Many people and schools believe that making community service not optional for receiving a diploma could only benefit the students it’s required of but in a way it’s more harmful than helpful.
Should kids have to have community service hours to graduate American labor leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association Cesar Chavez once said “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community, our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.” This statement remains true till this day, that’s why high school students should have community service hours to graduate. So they know that they should give without expecting anything in return, so they know how to be more compassionate for others, and so they can get connected with the community. Everyday you see someone in need of help, chances are that you wouldn’t stop to help them. This is of course no blame towards you because you might need to go somewhere or you might fear the person that you would help and these are all valid reasons but what about the times that you don’t have a reason for not stopping to help someone.
A continuous debate that is currently receiving much attention is whether community service should be a mandatory graduation requirement. Preparing students to effectively function in the real world is an important aspect of our education system. Today more than ever, there is an emphasis on having experience before beginning work. Most jobs are now focused on looking past your resume to see what you have given back to the community. Nevertheless, it is important that schools focus on preparing college students for the work force by mandating that they receive all of the necessary exposure and experience. Numerous schools across the country have mandated that in order for their students to graduate, they must complete a predetermined amount of community service. In Maryland, high school students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours of service in order to graduate. However, this decision has resulted in a lot of mixed responses. Advocates of this decision stress that mandatory community service opens doors for students, while the opponents feel that it takes away valuable time from students who need to focus on their education. I believe that gaining experience outside of school is critical for future success in life. To ensure that students are prepared to transition smoothly from school to work, they need to be involved with the community while in school in order to build the leadership skills that are necessary to succeed.
Not only did she have to sacrifice for this requirement but it took a stressful toll having to do that with all the other things going in her life. After it all, Annie was the same after the community service as she was before, it having no real academic impact nor having it taught her anything new to further her in her career path and future. Therefor, a set hours of community service should not be a requirement for high school graduation. Community service is a wonderful opportunity for people to voluntarily help out in their city or town and is a good foundation for a close community, although having community service hours be weaved into the graduation requirements of high school students is not right for a few reasons. Community service is a voluntary act to help out, that said, having it be required makes it kind of hypocritical. Also the community service students are being asked to do outside of school has no
“Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like or have time for.” Community service is really easy to get into. I mean, it is not like you have to put out an application and have an interview in order to do it. It is really easy to get into, and is really fun. It is things you wouldn’t even think are considered, like:
Middle school students are already busy with community service, which, in the opinion of many teachers, parents, and students, is more important than A.R. Community service helps those who are less fortunate and builds
While requiring high school students to complete a service requirement seems like it would be beneficial to society, it could actually be doing more harm than good. Part of the philosophy behind mandatory service for students is that the exposure to the needy and the act of helping the community will foster an enjoyment for service that will motivate students to stay involved following their high school careers. For example, one high school in Manhattan states that, “Community service must be harnessed to foster a sense of community in a school, a neighborhood, and beyond” (The Dalton School). In theory, this sounds appealing. In additional to all the service students give during high school, if they kept it up later in life, America would have no shortage of people willing to make their communities better. Unfortunately, forcing students to do service work does not make them do more service in
Imagine you are going to graduate from a school. You and your friends are all excited and happy... until you hear some news that you had to do a 'task', that isn't important for school, in order to graduate. Let's say that 'task' is Community Service. I believe we shouldn't have to do Community Service because we need to study, finish our homework, and do after school activities.
As an 18-year-old tennager, I was forced by my parents to participate a summer volunteer program in my freshman year. Even though I felt that I was a victim of “tyranny” in the beginning, I realized that I actually enjoyed the process of helping people in the middle of the program. Now, I participate that program every year as an active member, and I have gained the personal enrichment that I am unable to learn from other sources such as math club or SAT preparatory class. There is no doubt that community service can bring essential benefits in helping students develop their moral value and future interest, and it should be mandatory because some students attempt to utilize community service as a tool for their own profit without the school supervision.
On average, when people think about community service, they assume that volunteering is just ‘hours we need to be able to graduate’ and that is it. Community service is more than just hours; community service is based on the acts performed by someone with the purpose of helping or bringing benefits to his or her community. People frequently compare community service as a punishment since it is often offered to small-time offenders as an alternative to fines or jail time. However, community service is the vital force to many communities since they depend on the service made by the volunteers
