While requiring high school students to complete a service requirement seems like it would be beneficial to society, it could actually be doing more harm than good. Part of the philosophy behind mandatory service for students is that the exposure to the needy and the act of helping the community will foster an enjoyment for service that will motivate students to stay involved following their high school careers. For example, one high school in Manhattan states that, “Community service must be harnessed to foster a sense of community in a school, a neighborhood, and beyond” (The Dalton School). In theory, this sounds appealing. In additional to all the service students give during high school, if they kept it up later in life, America would have no shortage of people willing to make their communities better. Unfortunately, forcing students to do service work does not make them do more service in …show more content…
The first time I volunteered to sort food at a food shelter for my middle school service requirement, I felt confused. I had heard adults who volunteered talking about how good they felt to be giving back to their community and helping those in need; so why did I feel like I was just doing busy work in order to graduate? At no point did I feel like my work was fostering a sense of community in me. When I finished my service requirement, I was relieved to be done and did not take up community service again until I entered high school and faced yet another service requirement. And it’s not just me: I do not know a single other student who found they truly enjoyed community service through their high school or middle school service requirement. I do know students who enjoy volunteering, yet all of them got started with service before they were required to do it. With this evidence, it does not seem like a mandatory service requirement is fostering a sense of community in
Many high schools around the country have made community service hours mandatory in order for the seniors to graduate. Not everyone agrees that this should be a requirement because seniors already have enough on their plate. When seniors are about to graduate, it does not matter how many tasks they have to complete as a requirement if they do not feel like doing it and they have no motivation they will not complete
Many schools require students to participate in community service, but I think this is a good idea. Many schools do not require students to volunteer in community service. I agree that students should have to volunteer to graduate. I think that students should be forced to volunteer for community service sometime in their high school career as it makes people work and shows them what work really is. It also gets people off there lazy tail.
The fight to not do Community Service to graduate. By reading the article by: Claire Koenig no schools should not require Community Service to graduate from high school. Community Service should be optional you are trying to help the community in your own time not because the school tells you to.
Is graduating a goal for you? To be the first one to graduate in your family? It’s like as if you’re almost there, just one more step but you need one more requirement to be eligible. In this article “Pro/Con: Should Student Service Learning Hours Be Mandatory?” By Claire Koeing, it states the opinion of why high school students should and shouldn’t do community service as a requirement to graduate high school. Many have their own opinion of why it is and isn’t important to have community service as a requirement. High school students mainly seniors already have so much stress and to do, but this does prepare them and give them a taste of how it will be after graduation.
High school administrations care about the well being of their students. They aim to guide the students in a way that will prepare them for the future ahead of each student. Thus administrations of high school have certain requirements that students must finish before graduating. There is one requirement that is commonly debated by high school administration and students, this topic being community service. Community service should not be required in order to graduate from high school since forcing students to volunteer leads to false information on their records, forcing students to do so does not mean that they will continue doing community service after they graduate, and it does not mean the student will mature.
“‘The Logic of Mandatory Volunteerism”, by Stewart Ains, is an intriguing piece regarding the assertion that community service should be a requirement for graduation from high school. There are a multitude of arguments fighting this claim, but as a high school student who has to complete this task, I have strong feelings about why it is significant. If community service was not required by high schools, a vast number of students who attend that school would never have the opportunity to do something to give back. Completing community service can also benefit a student on his or her college applications and can help when deciding what one is passionate about. Accomplishing something for the community can teach a great deal of life lessons,
My high school requires twenty-five service hours each year of high school in order to graduate, plus an additional fifteen to be involved in National Honor Society. While this may make all of the community services I have participated in sound like a mere school requirement, it is actually the complete opposite of that. Without those school requirements, I am not sure how involved I would be in my community. But due to them, I am always involved in some way.
Community service is not required in most colleges or universities. Volunteer work is a great way to help out the community, but many students already have a lot on their plates if they want to graduate on time. Many students do not have enough time due to the countless hours doing excessive school work. Many colleges give students enough requirements in order to graduate, and requiring students to do 50 hours of volunteer work is pushing it. Many students have lives outside of school that comes first. Some students have jobs that take up most of their time before or after school, which gives them not enough time to do their school work. Some students have families at home that are more important. Some students are in clubs and sports. Requiring students to serve would just take away from their achievements in other areas. A lot of time is taken away from them because of extra requirements. Louisiana College should not require 50 hours of community service in order for students to graduate.
“In 2009, 63.4 million Americans volunteered by choice” (The Heart of Service). If the United States forces people to volunteer they will have a mindset that they have to be there so they’ll only do it half way. By forcing community service people might not want to come back and do it again because their first experiance wasn’t a good one.
Although community service is a great way to give back to the community, it has been tainted by its use as a requirement for high school graduates. Forcing volunteer work should be recognized for more than just a bare minimum, is unfair to those who have other obligations and provides no lasting benefit to the students. Many people and schools believe that making community service not optional for receiving a diploma could only benefit the students it’s required of but in a way it’s more harmful than helpful.
Community service does not require you to cure cancer, or creating a huge organization that funds diabetes research, but can instead be little things. While I know in the great aspect of the world and life I did not to a humongous deed of goodwill, but it made me feel completed and good about myself helping out the little girls and making a bowl, which I why more people should help out around the community. Who knows where we could get if everyone picked up teach once a week, or made a $10 donation to a
In the first article, the author talks about how for many young adults they are almost all afraid to become active members in their community and it is up to the adults to give them a little nudge in the right direction. So they had the idea to make community service a requirement for the public schools. Showing students the different levels of needs of people in their community can help them thrive into great adults someday.
Kids and teens in school these days are told to work hard to benefit their future. There’s so many options for colleges and careers. Sometimes it’s hard for students to get recognized by colleges even if there academics are amazing or you're a stellar athlete. These students are missing a piece, community service.
For some students, service is seen as nothing more than a grade, as something that has no purpose beyond college applications. The lack of visible results may sometimes give the impression that no changes are being made, but community service is one of the most important building blocks of our country. We have to look at each other when nobody else will lend a
Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but make a life by what we give." Volunteerism not only helps ones community, but additionally benefits teenagers in personally and professional way. High school students should be required to complete one hundred hours of community service before entering college in order to increase their global awareness and maturity.
