Communication competence, as defined by Yoosun Hwang, is the ease at which someone can present a message. Hwang's model of communication states that media efficacy is positively influenced by communication, however mediated communications require a different set of skills than face-to-face communication. I agree with Hwang on that. However, while someone who is good at one form is likely to be good in another, the efficacy at someone can communicate is NOT the same when switching mediums of communication. Before this week's reading I did not believe that a person's competence changed when switching from face-to-face to mediated communication, because I believe that someone's excellence at communicating face-to-face would translate to communicating

According to Melissa Fabello effective communication is hard. After reading her article I have to say that she is right, not a lot of people know how to communicate effectively. Expressing feelings enables us to think through and move on from troubling negative emotions.
I have learned that communication competency is the ability to be both effective and appropriate. This is a good reminder to be conscious of how you go about discussing certain things. After reading section 1.3 I realized I communicate with too much appropriateness that I don’t always get what I hope to achieve out of some conversations. With this, I think the most important characteristic of a competent communicator is the ability to perform skillfully. This would also be the one characteristic I could use improvements on because I choose the appropriate way to communicate, but don’t always perform the behavior effectively. Those who can both communicate effectively and appropriately fit the definition of a competent communicator. My question

A time I've experienced bad communication was when I worked at Regal two years ago, it was the first month I've been there and I was just learning how to operate all the equipment but I was never shown how to operate the popcorn machine. One night I was working with one other girl and my one manager who stayed in her office. My co-worker had to go on her break and she told me she would see me in 45 minuets when she would be back from her break. She tended to forget to tell me anything else and left. I than suddenly started to see a lot of smoke coming out of the popcorn machine and a horrendous smell of burnt popcorn which filled the whole theater and made the whole main area with a lot of smoke. My manager than ran out of office because she
This exercise provided insight to my personal methods and style of communicating and actively listening when working. When reflecting on previous communications with my co-workers and management, I can see both my strengths and weakness in communicating, especially when dealing with difficult people. It is important as a nurse to be aware of one’s own communication styles, verbal and nonverbal actions, as you could be saying one thing, but demonstrating a totally different message through body language, facial expressions or silence (Sullivan, 2017). I feel that my positive characteristics in communicating with co-workers include active listening, comprehension of what others are trying to say ,acknowledging other’s contributions to the conversation,
Goal for the interaction: My goals for the interaction was to create and build a therapeutic relationship with the client. I hoped to use multiple communication techniques such as the use of open ended questions and general leads.
My cooperating teacher communicates with her students’ parents in many ways. She has had many of her students in her previous classes, such and kindergarten and first grade. Since she has known many of her students for so long, she has developed strong relationships or communication with most of their parents. I have seen her communicate with parents over the school phone, email, and she also uses her personal phone to make calls or send texts to parents. She has an open and easy communication with the parents. She contacts parents to let them know if their child is having a behavior problem in school, or even if the student has showed an outstanding achievement in the classroom. I even had my first experience speaking with a parent about a
As communicative competence becomes a more focused goal for classrooms across the U.S., student progress in developing higher levels of proficiency becomes increasingly important. In order to prepare students adequately for the work force as well as post-secondary education, students need a long sequence of well-articulated language learning that begins in elementary school. If students are expected to be ready to use their languages for professional purposes upon entering the work force, they need to leave the K-12 educational system with an Advanced level of proficiency and the post-secondary world at the Superior level. Meeting these levels of proficiency requires that students begin early and continue in an extended sequence of language
To begin with, in my take home essay I will be addressing my understanding of communication competence, and the criteria that I applied to evaluate myself as a competent communicator. Also in this essay, a group activity was done and with it I would use it to acknowledge how my communication was in the activity.
These questions are perhaps answered by Canale and Swain (1980) in their analysis of communicative competence. They defined communicative competence as the underlying knowledge and skills that are necessary for communication to occur. Communicative

Notoriously, I am never been one to shy away from communication. It does not matter whether it is an unfamiliar face or a longtime acquaintance. In any given situation, I am always eager to share my ideas, my opinions, my views, and jokes with everyone around me. Occasionally my eagerness hits me way too hard and I find my words jumbled and making little sense, but I just take a deep breath and try again. My friends always describe me as animated when I talk, especially considering that I love to talk with my hands. Whenever I communicate, my body moves along with the words I say and it is nearly impossible for me to be still. Other than the interactions I have daily with others, I have little professional public speaking experience. Many of
