“We are part of this universe; we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts, is that the universe is in us.” This quote was stated by Neil deGrasse Tyson, author of Coming to our Senses. Coming to our Senses was published in 2005. The main idea of Coming to our Sense is that our senses are limited and that we need technology to enhance it to better our world. Tyson is effective in delivering the main idea by using rhetorical devices found throughout his essay. Tyson is effective because he uses allusion, rhetorical questions, and sensory details. He used this Star Trek example so that his audience are able to understand that humans need technology because their sense are limited. Without the tricorder, the characters wouldn’t be able to analyze what they found because they are not able to see anything beyond their limit. The Star Trek example is effective in delivering the main idea because he shows that his readers, just like the Star Trek characters, have to use technology to analyze complicated matter. In another part of the essay, page 164, he mentions the city of Oz. Dorothy has to follow a yellow brick road to find the city of Oz, she cannot find it on her own. Similarly, humans have to use a compass to find north. He states that if people were born with magnetic detectors, then the compass would have never been invented. He uses this example because he wants the audience to understand that their senses are limited because if it was not they would not have to use a compass.
