Introduction: April 20, 1999, is a day of remembrance for many people. The Columbine massacre had an effect not only on the Littleton, Colorado community but also on the entire country. In the book Columbine by Dave Cullen, the author tells the story of the tragedy that started with Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. The book begins with an introduction into both Eric and Dylan's thoughts, actions, and reasoning behind their plan to attack their high school. Throughout the book the author points out how the media gave a different view for the motives of the attack which caused false accusations towards the killers. The struggle to change and be accepted into society can sometimes be too much to handle. Family upbringing, acquaintances and friends play a major role in the way the youth of today think. Throughout the movie American History X Derek and Danny struggle with changing who they have become into something they feel they should be. At the beginning of the movie Derek is a terrible role model for his younger brother Danny. Derek becomes involved in the neo-Nazi movement and winds up in prison after killing rival gang members. Once Derek is released from prison, he realizes the Nazi scene isn't a righteous cause and pushes his brother to also change his way of thinking. Danny, who will follow his brother through whatever, decides to help him rip all the Nazi paraphernalia off their shared bedroom wall. Derek was motivated to change his way of life because of Lamont, a black prisoner, who befriended Derek while in prison. At first the two were not too sure about each other considering that Derek had a huge swastika tattoo on his chest. But throughout Dereks sentence the two managed to have each others backs in prison and that led Derek to believe that he should not be ignorant towards other races/religions. Derek and Danny managed to change their ignorant way of thinking. They gained their independence by cutting ties with the neo-Nazi movement and also learned how to accept all different types of people into their lives. Section
