Observing college students in a natural, casual setting is quite interesting. A person can learn fascinating details about how young adults interact by sitting back and watching them from a distance without having any actual interaction. People and their mannerisms vary depending on the environment they surround themselves with. By the use of observation, an individual cannot only learn about his or her surroundings/peers, but also, the culture. Social anthropology is defined as the study of a group of humans in a particular society and their interactions. I used this particular type of anthropology while performing my own observation on the University of Southern Mississippi’s campus.
Deciding on which location on the university’s campus was challenging for me. I found myself asking, “Where would I get the best representation of how a college student spends his or her time when not in the classroom?” Speaking from a college student’s perspective, food locations on campus or the library is where I, personally, spend my time. After analyzing the various food locations we have here on campus, my final decision was Seymour’s. Seymour’s is the prime setting to perform observations from my own point of view. The college students who chose to sit alone were either on their cell phones or computers on social media and working on homework. The groups of people were talking amongst themselves about weekend plans and what was currently happening in their lives. Although there was background noise, the area never got to the point where it was too noisy to concentrate. People were minding their own business while respecting others and the environment as a whole. After finishing up their meals and/or business, they would pick up any trash and quietly leave.
