College Freshman's Readiness

Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.

Gary Colombo, Robert Cullen, and Bonnie Lisle in their book “Rereading America” feel that commencing college is a very disturbing experience. So many things we have to deal while starting college, but the major challenges are expanded difficulty levels and higher expectation which we are not familiar over the years of high school. In order to solve this issue, we have to remodel ourselves by taking up the challenge and rethink about our strength and flaws. To succeed in college we need to be mentally strong and dedicated towards our goal.

High School was and still is a really confusing period of my life. I’m still confused actually, like this paper is baffling (even with all the help). To be honest, half the time I had no idea what I was doing, and I just winged it. The way I see it, it’s ridiculous that teenagers are expected to go from high school to college in such a small window of time. This book made me feel wholly unprepared for college, both in what I did during the last three years, as well as what this year holds as far as applications. Both of these changes are dramatic and, as a result, feelings are difficult to put down into words. A messy combination of emotions fills the heart, surfacing in strange ways. Confident high school seniors go right back to the bottom of the chain when entering college as freshmen. These students start all over, just like entering grade school or high school for the first time. The move up from high school to college signals the switch from dependence to self-sufficiency. From a personal point of view, going through the experience of graduating high school and transferring to a residential college campus at STLCOP, made me realize I was no longer a kid and capable of making my own decisions.

This article seeks to focus on the academic preparedness of first-generation college students comparing with students whose parents had college experiences through qualitative approach. Based on the previous research on the academic preparedness of first-generation college students, the author examines whether the first generation college student status affects self-assessment of academic preparedness in the same way it affects traditional measures of academic preparedness.

After graduating high school, no one prepares you for college. Most kids when they are finished with high school don’t even fantasize about going back to school. It is often said, that high school, prepares a student for college. For certain, a student is being prepared, but only for what the world has to offer, and that is making choices on what to pursue. Certainly, most people would concur with this statement. But, the fact to consider is, that high school does not prepare a student for the major difference in the challenge.

For many, after graduating high school the next big step is college. I never asked myself why or if I even wanted to. This may sound strange, exaggerated or overrated, but freshmen year in college is the first step to be a Millionaire, yes, a Millionaire! Although freshmen year is an exciting one because student become totally independent and enter professional life, an unplanned and wasted freshmen year may lead to serious career problems. Students come from different parts of the globe, generally away from home for the first time, to live, study and work. Freshmen year has to be well planned because it is a major transition in a person’s life. Freshmen year includes choosing your major which might be tricky if a student has not found an interest in a specific study area in his high school years. It also includes making friends and joining different clubs which make add a lot of fun to your daily life. There are several steps that a freshmen student should follow in order to succeed in college, discover the right major and enjoy his four years in college; these steps are vital to familiarize you with different aspects of area of study in order to make a decision about your future career.
