Week 3 of the college football season is in the books, and the history book was nearly rewritten Saturday when Ohio State narrowly escaped Northern Illinois with a 20-13 victory in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes’ back-to-back title hopes are still alive, while other teams around the country saw their championship dreams dashed. Below is a recap of the most significant storylines from week 3 of the 2015 college football season. Most Significant Victory - No. 8 Notre Dame Outlasts No. 14 Georgia Tech, 30-22 When Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire suffered a season-ending ankle injury last week, many thought the Irish’s chances of making the College Football Playoff went up in smoke. Yet, backup quarterback DeShone Kizer has ridden to the rescue, …show more content…
6 USC, 41-31 Despite a 9-4 record in 2014, the Trojans were the popular pick to win the Pac-12 in 2015. That sentiment took a decisive blow when Stanford (yes the Stanford that got bullied by Northwestern in week 1) upset USC Saturday in the Coliseum. The Trojans were one of two teams, including Alabama, ranked in the top 10 that went down Saturday. A third team, Ohio State, almost suffered one of the biggest upsets in college football history at home. USC’s chances of reaching the College Football Playoff certainly aren’t out of reach. Trojan fans only have to recall the Buckeyes title run following an ugly loss to Virginia Tech in week 2 last season. Saturday’s upcoming contest with Arizona State is probably a must win for USC. The harsh reality is that the Trojans likely have to win all the remaining games on their schedule to achieve their preseason goals. Standout …show more content…
The Buckeyes struggled early last season, including a shocking loss to Virginia Tech before Urban Meyer’s assemblage of talent made its magical run that ended with a championship in the inaugural College Football Playoff. After a solid outing against Virginia Tech in their season opener this season, the Buckeyes have looked out of whack against two non-Power 5 conference foes (Hawaii and Northern Illinois). Despite playing outside the big boy conferences, both Hawaii and Northern Illinois are capable opponents. But, Ohio State is supposed to dominate the competition on its alleged inferior schedule — a forecast that hasn’t come to fruition. Three weeks into the season, Meyer still doesn’t know who his starting quarterback is and his loaded offense has looked less than impressive. The Buckeyes will attempt to get their offense on track against Western Michigan on
PREVIEW: This game has gone as high as five but it looks like the public has agreed that three is the correct line. This is a repeat of last year's game where the Irish trounced the Longhorns 38-3 in the first game of the year. Both teams are having QB issues and Kelly said veterans DeShone Kizer and Malik Zaire will share the quarterback duties duties for the Irish. Texas senior quarterback Tyrone Swoopes hasn't shown the ability to control the QB position for a good part of two seasons, so it will be more likely Freshman Shane Buechele who will see more action. The Irish were hit hard and now have the fewest number of returning starters in the country after losing their top rusher, three leading receivers, four top tacklers, a sack leader
Football is back in Aggie Land! Well for the Spring at least; as the North Carolina Agriculture & Technical State University football team held their annual Blue vs Gold Spring Game on last Sunday afternoon. There were some big plays, some stand out players and a hard hitting action last Sunday, so let’s hop in.
The Houston Cougars were the darlings of the 2015 college football season thanks to their head coach Tom Herman, leading them to a 13-1 record and a Peach Bowl victory over the Florida State Seminoles.
The Temple Owls had a magical and fun 2015 season that saw them win 10 games, win the AAC East division and go to the Boca Raton Bowl.
After one of the worse season's in recent memory, the Michigan Wolverines needed a big change. That big change turned out to be the hiring of Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, former NFL coach of the San Francisco 49ers and former All-American QB at Michigan. For years, fans and boosters have been screaming for a coach who personifies Wolverines football. Now they have their man. His first task will be trying to revive an offense that went to sleep in 2014, scoring a meager 20.9 PPG on a total of 333 YPG.
Ohio State (Falling)- Ohio State has lost a couple straight games and have looked sloppy. Their star player Keita Bates Diop has been shutdown and they’ve struggled to slow down opposing teams. Chris Holtmann is a very good coach and should be able to get the bucks to bounce back, but these losses have probably dropped the Buckeyes to a 5 seed.
Luckily for him, the strength of this team is its wealth of offensive talent, particularly on the offensive line. They feature what may be the best offensive tackle in college football in Ronnie Stanley, future NFL draft pick Nick Martin (brother of Zach Martin) at center, and 4-5 star talent at left guard, right guard and right tackle. This is the unit that paved the way for Notre Dame to run for 263 yards on 5.2 a carry and three touchdowns against LSU, which was only giving up 152 yards a game on the ground and 4.3 a carry. Notre Dame returns junior running back Tarean Folston, who in his first two seasons sharing time; he’s run for 1,359 yards, 5.1 a carry and 10 total touchdowns. Moving to back him up is converted receiver C.J. Prosise, who has some experience out of the backfield, and has even pushed Folston for first team carries in fall camp. At receiver, Notre Dame returns a core that has 223 career catches, 3,383 yards and 28 touchdowns. That group is led by one of the most underrated players in college football, Will Fuller, who finished his breakout sophomore season with 76 catches, 1,094 yards and 15 touchdowns. He’s a guy who teams, um, had trouble keeping up with. Right, Michigan? Notre Dame is going to look towards the Ohio State model on offense this year, they are going to hit teams hard with the run, and gash teams with
The Mountaineers' offensive line has the ability to give the running backs and receivers a chance to flourish against anyone in the country.
Regardless of rankings, each of the 64 teams are starting with zero losses. After all is said and done, the Michigan State Spartans looked like the best team in the country by seasons end. However, the truth about the best team will not be known until the final game concludes on April
Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah may not be able to compete with the Packers in Week Three of NFL despite being a part of the successful ground attack during this season’s first two weeks. Abdullah is recently injured during the second quarter of this Sunday’s game. The initial test conducted showed that the running back suffered from a foot sprain, though further evaluation will be expected soon.
On September 9th, 2007, tragedy struck as the Buffalo Bills’ tight end, Kevin Everett, broke his neck on the 2nd half kickoff against the Denver Broncos. The injury was caused by a helmet to helmet hit on the Denver Broncos’ kick returner, Domenik Hixon. Head and neck injuries like these continue to be a threat to many football players. Many solutions have been tried, but none have made a significant impact on the safety of the game.
weaknesses are improved and fixed actively by USC. Overall, I believe USC is a good
Kessler leads an offense that is averaging 450 total yards and 35 points per game. USC wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kessler’s main target, is in the Top 15 Nationally in receiving yards and receiving TD’s (85 receptions for 1,389 yards and 10 TD’s). The Trojans rushing attack; a combination of Junior Tailback Justin Smith (157 carries for 875 yards, 5 TD’s, averaging 5.6 yards per carry) and Freshman All-American candidate Tailback Ronald Jones (145 carries for 940 yards, 8 TD’s, averaging 6.5 yards per carry), both players have a shot at a 1,000 yard rushing year.
The particular rivalry within this book that relates to Appalachian community is in his Ohio State vs. Michigan: Woody, Bo, and Beyond chapter. This chapter begins explaining the history behind the Ohio State vs. Michigan rivalry and “The Game” that began between them in 1897. Gitlin kindly included the origin of the “We don’t give a damn about the whole state of Michigan,” chant by introducing the Ohio State fan who shouted it before a game. “Soon a band in the lobby began laying a tune called ‘The Old Gray Mare,’ to which the fans substituted the new lyrics: ‘Oh, we don’t give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, we’re from O-HI-O.’ A chant was born that would remain a Buckeye put-down of “ that state up north ” for generations,” (Gitlin, 6). Ohio communities have memorized this chant and relate to one another through it. The memorable games between the two during 1969 and 1970 are known by every Ohio State or Michigan fan, player, or community member. In 1969, number one ranked Ohio State lost an upset match against Michigan and sought revenge. So, when the 1970 game came around the Buckeyes were focused and ready to deliver their payback. The Buckeyes rolled over the Wolverines only allowing Michigan 151 yards. This win for the Buckeyes not
On October 17, 2015, it was the Michigan vs Michigan State football game with Michigan leading 23-21. With 10 seconds left in the game, Michigan was on 4th down and punting into an empty Spartan territory. The Michigan center released a poor snap and the punter fumbled the ball, allowing Jalen Watts-Jackson to recover it and score a touchdown as time expired. The final score was 27-23.
