College Athletes Should Not Be Paid

Overall the NCAA is the hub for all collegiate sports and allows many students to get a free education. Some might say that athletes should be paid because they bring in tons of money, paying athletes would bring them some sense of financial awareness and because they often don't have enough money for necessities. But they don't deserve to get paid because scholarships are payment enough, because many college kids are irresponsible with money, and the NCAA makes sure the players' have what they need. Many people think that college athletes should be paid, but they shouldn't.

If the NCAA decided to pay college athletes, it would create more problems than solutions. For example, if student-athletes are offered a salary, most likely the cost of school tuition will go up because the money paid to the student-athletes must come from somewhere and the revenue from sporting events and memorabilia will not be enough to cover all student-athlete salaries as well as expenses to run all the college’s sports programs. In addition, not all college sports draw the same fan base and therefore, income is greatly varied between sports programs which in turn will create an unfair balance when determining the salary for each student-athlete. All student-athletes regardless of which sport they are participating would expect equal pay.

While people think that they should not be paid for a few reasons, I think college athletes should be paid above their student scholarships. Some reasons why they should not be paid is because their education will become secondary, they are amateurs, some colleges cannot afford to pay them, and they are under scholarships. Some say they should not be paid because they will put education as their secondary option. College students will view academics as a lesser option because they are getting a salary while playing.

College students would also go to college all four years instead of leaving a couple years early. So, yes college athletes should be paid. Now, I understand people would say that these are just college students and not the pros. If athletes got paid though, they would stay all four years at college. The athletes go to the NBA early just for the money.

One of the most important reasons why college athletes should not be paid is that most schools just simply can not afford to pay their athletes. College athletes are fun and exciting to watch each and every time we watch them. The only problem with college athletes are that they are not getting paid like they should be. Athletes give it their all each and every time they go out on the court or the field. The NCAA makes billions of dollars each and every year from championship games or the NCAA March Madness, but none of that money is sent to the players. College athletes have the right to be paid by the NCAA and the universities because they represent the product that both are selling.

College athletes should be paid. The athletes put in as much work as the people who do get paid. Why should they not be paid? There are many pros for why they should get paid, but there are also many cons on why they should not get paid. The athletes should get paid because of how hard they work in season and the off-season. Do not pay all of the athletes, but pay the ones who are at a D1 college. The athletes should get paid because they put in the same amount of time as the pros do, and the pros get paid.

The NCAA has control over all collegiate sports and whether or not college athletes should be paid for the revenue their sport generates has been an issue for years. The NCAA has remained strict on their rules and regulations, but recently college athletes and coaches have spoken up. A majority of college athletes are getting a free education but some believe that isn’t enough. The NCAA is a billion dollar industry and that is why some college athletes believe they deserve more than a “free” education. I strongly believe that college athletes shouldn’t get paid because a scholarship to a college to play for their team and a free education is enough payment. Student-athletes with full-ride scholarships don’t have to worry about student loans or any other debts they would have to pay back for attending that college.

College athletes should be paid because of the hard work, dedication and effort they put into their respective sports. These athletes are a major source of income for their schools and they are not receiving a penny for it. These college athletes deserved to be paid, colleges are using these athletes to get money and they are never given anything but a pat on the back and a good job. College athletes work and train extremely hard to perform at the highest level possible.
